On a day that the U.S. recorded over 1,000 COVID-19 deaths, Donald Trump tweets that we’re doing “well” and reiterates that the infectious disease will soon “disappear”

Both of these tweets were posted on the same day — July 21, 2020. In the first, the President of the United States, without offering any evidence to back up his claim, brags about how “well” we’re handling the COVID-19 pandemic compared with other countries. In the second, the New York Times reports that, once again, our daily death toll in the United States has climbed above 1,000. [Donald Trump would later reiterate his belief that COVID-19 would eventually just “disappear.”]

I had more that I wanted to share with you today, like the fact that Donald Trump wished an accused child sex trafficker well from the White House during a COVID-19 press briefing, and that he’s apparently been trying to further enrich is family by getting the British Open moved to his Scottish golf resort, but I chose instead to take the night off and introduce my eight year old son to The Producers. [I figure he’s probably old enough to appreciate Nazi mockery.] So, you’re on your own.

Oh, and I know you already know this, but we’re not handling COVID better than most other countries. Here, from Worldometer, if you’re interested, are the actual death numbers reported today from around the world. As you can see, we aren’t doing better than other countries. In fact, the only country with more deaths is Brazil.

Today in Fascism: With DHS officers having been deployed to Portland, Chicago prepares for the inevitable, and we wonder if Detroit might be next

The cool, military-looking guy above is former lobbyist Chad Wolf. [Insert Donald Trump “Drain the swamp!” soundbite.] As I understand it, Wolf has never served a day in the military. He did, however, attend Southern Methodist University on a tennis scholarship, and earn an undergraduate degree in history. And, now, because he was in the right place at the right time, and ingratiated himself to Donald Trump, he’s in charge of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), overseeing the department’s $50 billion budget and 240,000 employees. [Wolf had been Chief of Staff to DHS secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, when Donald Trump fired her. It was in that role, as I understand it, that he helped draft the Trump Administration’s controversial and immoral family separation policy.]

It’s worth noting that Wolf has not been confirmed by the Senate for the position he holds. It’s also worth noting that he’s the person ostensibly responsible for dispatching DHS officers to Portland, where they are now unconstitutionally snatching U.S. citizens off the street in unmarked vans and beating protesters.

Here Wolf is, earlier today, responding to questions about his having sent federal paramilitary units to Portland over the objections of state and local officials… “I don’t need invitations by the state, state mayors, or state governors to do our job,” he said. “We’re going to do that, whether they like us there or not.”

And, today, there’s talk of Wolf sending federal officers into two more primarily Democratic cities; Chicago and Detroit.

Before we get into that, though, here’s a little background by way of Carrie Cordero, the Robert M. Gates Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, on how it came to pass that this relatively new federal agency — DHS — came to be politicized.

…During the campaign of 2016, candidate Trump ingratiated himself to the Border Patrol union, previewing a potential politicization of that workforce. In a spring 2019 visit with border agents at Calexico, California, Trump indicated a willingness to use his pardon authority if CBP refused to allow migrants U.S. entry pursuant to existing asylum laws.

Meanwhile, the president has marginalized the FBI while pivoting to DHS to carry out his “law and order” agenda. Trump has fired, removed or pressured to resign nearly every Senate-confirmed leadership official in DHS, leaving the department with inadequate leadership relative to the size, budget, and broad scope of responsibilities. Last year, Garrett Graff and I warned that DHS’s trouble stemming from internal public corruption, inadequate training and lack of transparency makes it more susceptible to inappropriate political pressure.

In May, as a result of a year’s worth of research and consultation with former DHS senior officials, former legislative staff and outside experts, I put forth a report arguing that DHS requires immediate congressional attention to improve its internal oversight and accountability mechanisms. In particular, the report called attention to the need for modernized and department-wide guidelines for conducting law enforcement activity, as well as updating the department’s mission, which has become wildly out of sync with its day to day activities.

In short: The extent to which DHS is becoming almost a rogue arm of federal law enforcement should not surprise anyone who has followed the department for the last four years…

So, back to the present day… We all suspected that what we were seeing play out in Portland was just Trump testing the waters to see what he could get away with. And now it looks as though his plan to crack down on cities that he perceives to be against him is getting ready to move into its next phase. The Chicago Tribune is reporting today that Wolf is preparing to deploy approximately 150 federal agents to Chicago this week. And, according to Sinclair Broadcasting’s Group Michigan political reporter Mikenzie Frost, Detroit may be next. Following are the responses that Frost received from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Dana Nessel when she reached out for comments.

This smacks of fascism pure and simple, and Wolf has to be Brought before Congress immediately to explain his actions as the acting head of DHS. As Senator Cory Booker said today, “What we’re seeing in Portland is what we would find under authoritarian regimes —- not the US. This horrific violence at the hands of these federal officers must end, and Attorney General Barr & DHS Secretary Chad Wolf must come before Congress to answer for their actions.

Please, if you’re going to do one meaningful thing today, make it finding the phone number of an elected official, and calling to urge that they join Booker in demanding that Wolf and Barr be brought before Congress. What we’re seeing happen right now in Portland, and what may soon be coming to Michigan, has no place in the United States of America. And we cannot afford to just wait and see how things play out at the ballot box. You can be certain, if we don’t step up and squash this now, it’ll just get worse as we approach November, and Donald Trump tries desperately to stay in power. We cannot allow our Democratic cities to be thrown into martial law under the pretext of “law and order”.

Thankfully, the people of Portland are standing up and doing their part. Now we need to do ours.

Trump declines to say whether he will accept the 2020 election results if he loses

Donald Trump’s Fox News interview with Chris Wallace did not disappoint. It had everything that anyone could hope for. Trump lied about the mortality rate of COVID-19, rambled about our “beautiful world wars”, and doubled down on his claim that coronavirus is just “going to disappear”. And, of course, there was the part where the President bragged to Wallace about having passed a cognitive assessment that asked him to identify an elephant. While all of that, no doubt, would be fun to discuss, there was something said that I think is a lot more deserving of our attention. During the interview, Donald Trump insinuated that he might not accept the will of the American people and leave the White House if he loses in November. When asked by Wallace if he would accept the results, should Joe Biden win, Trump said, “It depends. I think mail-in voting is going to rig the election. I really do.” And this should scare the shit out of every sentient American… Here’s if you’ve yet to see the exchange, is the video.

And, no, I don’t think I’m overreacting when I say that this incredibly troubling. I know that there are safeguards in place that would make it incredibly difficult for an American president to attempt to stay in power after having lost an election. I also know, however, that a significant percentage of Americans believed Donald Trump in 2016, when he claimed, without evidence, that Hillary Clinton had only won the popular vote because of voter fraud, and I hesitate to think what they might do if he tells them that the election has been stolen. Personally, I believe that, if Trump loses in November, he’ll step down so that Pence can pardon him, but we can’t count on that. No, we need to ensure that Trump loses by such an overwhelming margin that no one believes him when he says that voter fraud was to blame. [Let’s remember that Trump’s special task force, which was launched to back-up the claim that he’d won the popular vote in 2016, was quietly disbanded, when they couldn’t find any real evidence of voter fraud having taken place.]

This isn’t going to be easy. Donald Trump, and those who support him, are not going to just walk away without a fight. He’s had nearly four years now to place his sycophants in positions of power, and they will do whatever they can to keep him in the White House. As for how far they’re willing to go, I think what we’re seeing play out right now on the streets of Portland, should give us a pretty good indication of how far they’re willing to go.

So, please, if you don’t already, get in the practice of waking up every morning, and starting each day by asking, “What will I do today to ensure that Donald Trump is a one term president?” And, then, for God’s sake, do it.

Unidentified federal officers are kidnapping protesters from the streets of Portland

Back in early June, as you may recall, we discussed the fact that William Barr’s Department of Justice had deployed federal agents with no name badges and no unit insignia to police the streets of Washington, DC. Well, it seems to be happening again. Oregon Public Broadcasting last night confirmed that U.S. military members in camouflage, absent any agency identification or badges, and driving unmarked rental cars, have been grabbing protestors off the streets of Portland. The story is still developing, but here are few items to be aware of.

Why is this happening in Portland? And why is it happening now, over a month-and-a-half into the protests that have been sweeping across the nation? Some are speculating that the Trump administration may be testing the waters to see what the American people will tolerate. As one Oregon activist said yesterday, “(Trump is) using Portland as a testing ground to see if he can get away with military control.”

update: The Washington Post has talked with one of the men picked up in the seemingly unconstitutional sweep of Portland. Here’s an excerpt.

When several men in green military fatigues and generic “police” patches sprang out of an unmarked gray minivan in front of Mark Pettibone in the early hours of Wednesday morning, his first instinct was to run.

He did not know whether the men were police or far-right extremists, who frequently don militarylike outfits and harass left-leaning protesters in Portland, Ore. The 29-year-old resident said he made it about a half-block before he realized there would be no escape.

Then, he sank to his knees, hands in the air.

“I was terrified,” Pettibone told The Washington Post. “It seemed like it was out of a horror/sci-fi, like a Philip K. Dick novel. It was like being preyed upon.”

He was detained and searched. One man asked him if he had any weapons; he did not. They drove him to the federal courthouse and placed him in a holding cell. Two officers eventually returned to read his Miranda rights and ask if he would waive those rights to answer a few questions; he did not.

And almost as suddenly as they had grabbed him off the street, the men let him go.

Pettibone said he still does not know who arrested him or whether what happened to him legally qualifies as an arrest. The federal officers who snatched him off the street as he was walking home from a peaceful protest did not tell him why he had been detained or provide him any record of an arrest, he told The Post. As far as he knows, he has not been charged with any crimes.

His detention, which was first reported by Oregon Public Broadcasting, and videos of similar actions by federal officials driving around Portland in unmarked cars have raised alarm bells for many. Legal scholars questioned whether the detentions pass constitutional muster.

“Arrests require probable cause that a federal crime had been committed, that is, specific information indicating that the person likely committed a federal offense, or a fair probability that the person committed a federal offense,” Orin Kerr, a professor at University of California at Berkeley Law School, told The Post. “If the agents are grabbing people because they may have been involved in protests, that’s not probable cause”…

update: The ACLU has issued a statement. “Usually when we see people in unmarked cars forcibly grab someone off the street we call it kidnapping,” the civil rights association said. What is happening now in Portland should concern everyone in the US. These actions are flat-out unconstitutional and will not go unanswered.”

update: Ben Collins raises a great point. What we’re seeing play out on the streets of Portland right now is pretty much what the right wing conspiracy theorists told us was going to happen during the Obama administration. [See Jade Helm.] Now that we’re seeing federal troops stanching people off our streets in the real world, though, they’re nowhere to be found.

The Trump administration stops the CDC from collecting COVID-19 hospitalization data

Earlier this week, the Trump administration ordered hospitals to stop reporting COVID-19 data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and instead send everything to a private firm by the name of TeleTracking Technologies. I’m still trying to figure out exactly what’s going on here, but it seems as though, while the company had been awarded the contract back in April, no one really knew about it until a few days ago, when word came out from the White House that hospitals were no longer to submit their infectious disease data to the CDC, as they’d been doing for years… And, of course, it’s worth noting that this happened at roughly the same time Trump re-tweeted a post from Chuck Woolery about how the CDC was “lying” about COVID-19 to hurt the President’s reelection chances.

Senator Patty Murray, the senior Democrat on the Senate health panel, made the following statement yesterday, upon learning that the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network was essentially being sidelined by a private firm with no relevant expertise, in middle of a deadly pandemic. “C.D.C. has had a system in place for over a decade to track infection data, and hospitals and states know and trust this system,” Murray said. “So it’s entirely unclear why the Trump administration has asked states and hospitals to upend their reporting systems in the middle of a pandemic — in 48 hours nonetheless — without a single explanation as to why this new system is better or necessary.”

Given the Trump administration’s track record relative to transparency, people are understandably concerned, thinking that perhaps, as infection rates are rising across the country, and ICU’s are becoming overwhelmed, this may be an attempt to obscure hospitalization data from American voters in the run-up to the election. [According to the Washington Post, the CDC had been receiving data from about 3,000 hospitals — or roughly 60 percent of the nation’s hospitals — at the point hospitals were instructed to stop sending data.]

Among those organizations sounding the alarm is the National Governors Association, which issued a statement today requesting more time for hospitals to switch over to the new reporting system, and urging that the aggregated hospitalization data remain publicly available. “To ensure the accurate reporting of this data, governors are requesting a 30-day delay of these new requirements, in order for hospitals to learn a new system, as they continue to deal with this pandemic,” the statement said. “In addition, governors urge the administration to make this information publicly available.”

Again, there may well be a good reason for changing systems. If there is, though, it has not been clearly articulated. And no one, as far as I can tell, has explained why this switch had to happen now, in the middle of a pandemic that has already cost over 136,000 Americans their lives. Given this, I think it’s completely understandable why people are skeptical… and why, earlier today, when people went to the CDC site to check on infection rates, and found the page taken down, they freaked the fuck out.

[note: The CDC later in the day, brought their website back online, but did so with notice that they’ve been told to stop collecting data themselves.]

David Simon, I think, said it best. “This is national insanity. Your federal government is demanding you send your child into groups of 20 to 25 others during a pandemic, but denying you the data to make an informed decision as to whether by complying you risk the health of that child and your entire family.”

Speaking of putting our kids back into school, when White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was asked today about Donald Trump’s instance that schools reopen, replied, “The science should not stand in the way of this.” [In her defense, McEnany, perhaps realizing what she’d said, later added, “The science is on our side here,” but it was clearly an afterthought. When she said, “The science should not stand in the way of this,” you can tell that she meant it.]
