Today in Fascism: With DHS officers having been deployed to Portland, Chicago prepares for the inevitable, and we wonder if Detroit might be next

The cool, military-looking guy above is former lobbyist Chad Wolf. [Insert Donald Trump “Drain the swamp!” soundbite.] As I understand it, Wolf has never served a day in the military. He did, however, attend Southern Methodist University on a tennis scholarship, and earn an undergraduate degree in history. And, now, because he was in the right place at the right time, and ingratiated himself to Donald Trump, he’s in charge of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), overseeing the department’s $50 billion budget and 240,000 employees. [Wolf had been Chief of Staff to DHS secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, when Donald Trump fired her. It was in that role, as I understand it, that he helped draft the Trump Administration’s controversial and immoral family separation policy.]

It’s worth noting that Wolf has not been confirmed by the Senate for the position he holds. It’s also worth noting that he’s the person ostensibly responsible for dispatching DHS officers to Portland, where they are now unconstitutionally snatching U.S. citizens off the street in unmarked vans and beating protesters.

Here Wolf is, earlier today, responding to questions about his having sent federal paramilitary units to Portland over the objections of state and local officials… “I don’t need invitations by the state, state mayors, or state governors to do our job,” he said. “We’re going to do that, whether they like us there or not.”

And, today, there’s talk of Wolf sending federal officers into two more primarily Democratic cities; Chicago and Detroit.

Before we get into that, though, here’s a little background by way of Carrie Cordero, the Robert M. Gates Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, on how it came to pass that this relatively new federal agency — DHS — came to be politicized.

…During the campaign of 2016, candidate Trump ingratiated himself to the Border Patrol union, previewing a potential politicization of that workforce. In a spring 2019 visit with border agents at Calexico, California, Trump indicated a willingness to use his pardon authority if CBP refused to allow migrants U.S. entry pursuant to existing asylum laws.

Meanwhile, the president has marginalized the FBI while pivoting to DHS to carry out his “law and order” agenda. Trump has fired, removed or pressured to resign nearly every Senate-confirmed leadership official in DHS, leaving the department with inadequate leadership relative to the size, budget, and broad scope of responsibilities. Last year, Garrett Graff and I warned that DHS’s trouble stemming from internal public corruption, inadequate training and lack of transparency makes it more susceptible to inappropriate political pressure.

In May, as a result of a year’s worth of research and consultation with former DHS senior officials, former legislative staff and outside experts, I put forth a report arguing that DHS requires immediate congressional attention to improve its internal oversight and accountability mechanisms. In particular, the report called attention to the need for modernized and department-wide guidelines for conducting law enforcement activity, as well as updating the department’s mission, which has become wildly out of sync with its day to day activities.

In short: The extent to which DHS is becoming almost a rogue arm of federal law enforcement should not surprise anyone who has followed the department for the last four years…

So, back to the present day… We all suspected that what we were seeing play out in Portland was just Trump testing the waters to see what he could get away with. And now it looks as though his plan to crack down on cities that he perceives to be against him is getting ready to move into its next phase. The Chicago Tribune is reporting today that Wolf is preparing to deploy approximately 150 federal agents to Chicago this week. And, according to Sinclair Broadcasting’s Group Michigan political reporter Mikenzie Frost, Detroit may be next. Following are the responses that Frost received from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Dana Nessel when she reached out for comments.

This smacks of fascism pure and simple, and Wolf has to be Brought before Congress immediately to explain his actions as the acting head of DHS. As Senator Cory Booker said today, “What we’re seeing in Portland is what we would find under authoritarian regimes —- not the US. This horrific violence at the hands of these federal officers must end, and Attorney General Barr & DHS Secretary Chad Wolf must come before Congress to answer for their actions.

Please, if you’re going to do one meaningful thing today, make it finding the phone number of an elected official, and calling to urge that they join Booker in demanding that Wolf and Barr be brought before Congress. What we’re seeing happen right now in Portland, and what may soon be coming to Michigan, has no place in the United States of America. And we cannot afford to just wait and see how things play out at the ballot box. You can be certain, if we don’t step up and squash this now, it’ll just get worse as we approach November, and Donald Trump tries desperately to stay in power. We cannot allow our Democratic cities to be thrown into martial law under the pretext of “law and order”.

Thankfully, the people of Portland are standing up and doing their part. Now we need to do ours.

So a man who protects his home from a mob, using his constitutionally guaranteed rights, is charged with a felony. But if an elected official takes steps to stop the lawbreakers – he’s a fascist?

The RNC is moving it’s money to defending the Senate majority.
I know last time the polls were wrong, but your argument that Trump’s totalitarian moves are playing well with the public at large is wrong. There’s polling on that too.

This is a desperate attempt. Trump didn’t have the guts to engage in a foreign war to bump his polling so he decided to attack US citizens. He’s both a pathologically insecure coward and a really bad strategist.

But we knew that when he was elected.

Riddle me this, right wingers? Why can’t local police handle this? If you are going to blame the Dom governor and mayor, then, if federal troops are needed, why is Trump using Homeland Security instead of the National Guard? Why the unmarked officers?

Are you really ok with that?

Federal employment KSAs for any law enforcement are a bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent level of experience, with Veterans hiring preference. Iraq and Afghanistan vets are getting hired in with private security contractor (overseas Mercs mostly) experience in lieu of degrees. I think the reason he is doing this is that it is what his supporters want. They want to see liberals crushed physically. They revel in it and support it. They LOVE the idea of sending troops into cities to put down what they see as people acting above their station which if you are female or a person of color means being subservient and deferential to white men. They really do perceive these peaceful protests as violent because to them it IS violence when those they do not feel should have a voice make themselves heard. I mean HW, EOS, and FF demonstrate this worldview all of the time. Listen to what they say. They are willing to crush their opponents with violence.

I can only hope that more and more people will see this and will vote accordingly in November. Especially since so many of his supporters will look at these actions and will vote for Trump *because* of them because they are deplorable people who would have no problems rounding the rest of us up and putting us into camps or just shooting us outright.

EOS, there are always bad actors and had the feds gone about this in a better way, that would be one thing. It has been pretty clear to me from witnessing protests (some first hand although admittedly from my car because I am socially distancing) that the vast majority of protestors are being peaceful. The problem is that the feds are acting like some kind of secret police by not wearing uniforms and using marked cars AND that they are not making a distinction between those who are there peacefully and those who are causing trouble. Even with those who are causing trouble, the response seems out of proportion.

    It is not ok.

EOS, they are wearing clothing that says POLICE on them that is widely available to anyone. Anyone can buy that kind of clothing. And frankly one of the valid concerns is that right-wing paramilitary guys will don such clothing in order to create more confusion.

Peaceful protests can happen any time of day or night. Often even when sit-ins are the form of protest.

The ONLY good thing about this is that instead of ignoring the protests as has happened in the past, people seem to be paying more attention. I see a lot of support for these protesters come from these actions that I didn’t see at all during other protests like Occupy. Not sure how much that is my bubble but I guess we will see on election day!

The police do their jobs in Democratically controlled cities just like they do in ones run by Republicans. The only difference is that Trump seems to feel it is ok to attack people based on their political leanings. That is scary to me. That so many Trump voters seem to think it is ok scares me even more.

I don’t even get it. I mean the Trump virus is already killing thousands. Why does this president feel a need to attack people for no good reason other than they disagree with him on politics? It is like he looked at the Trump virus situation and decided that he needed to do whatever he could to make people even more miserable.

It’s all about Trump and his use of Federal police and no mention of the growing violence in cities across our nation and the Democrats inability to put a stop to it. Or rather, their unwillingness to put an end to it.

The Democratic Party is running on a platform of lawlessness, hoping the American people will be stupid enough to believe it’s “justice.” But voters are not fools, and anarchy is not leadership.

Have they solved Sean’s murder yet? Look at the name on the door when she finishes her interview. Not sure if it is true but my understanding was that she told people around her son to wipe all communications they had with Sean and to not cooperate with the police. I wonder why??????

Cider Riot went up for sale soon after Sean’s murder. Nothing to see here. Erase random communications between random people who may or may not have been part of a. organization named Antifa that does not exist.
