On a day that the U.S. recorded over 1,000 COVID-19 deaths, Donald Trump tweets that we’re doing “well” and reiterates that the infectious disease will soon “disappear”

Both of these tweets were posted on the same day — July 21, 2020. In the first, the President of the United States, without offering any evidence to back up his claim, brags about how “well” we’re handling the COVID-19 pandemic compared with other countries. In the second, the New York Times reports that, once again, our daily death toll in the United States has climbed above 1,000. [Donald Trump would later reiterate his belief that COVID-19 would eventually just “disappear.”]

I had more that I wanted to share with you today, like the fact that Donald Trump wished an accused child sex trafficker well from the White House during a COVID-19 press briefing, and that he’s apparently been trying to further enrich is family by getting the British Open moved to his Scottish golf resort, but I chose instead to take the night off and introduce my eight year old son to The Producers. [I figure he’s probably old enough to appreciate Nazi mockery.] So, you’re on your own.

Oh, and I know you already know this, but we’re not handling COVID better than most other countries. Here, from Worldometer, if you’re interested, are the actual death numbers reported today from around the world. As you can see, we aren’t doing better than other countries. In fact, the only country with more deaths is Brazil.

1,119 deaths today in the US.

The 7-day moving average of daily deaths has now climbed to 829. That’s up more than 49% in two weeks.

  40. EOS
    Posted July 23, 2020 at 5:01 pm | Permalink

    iRobert,

There is no strategy that applies across the board in our nation. Each individual has personal characteristics and preexisting conditions that shape their decision. Individuals determine the level of risk they are willing to assume.

Trump has spoken very clearly. He has limited immigration from various affected countries. He has called for schools to open in the fall. He wants business to resume. He has ramped up the production of ventilators and PPE. He opened field hospitals in the most affected areas and closed them when they were not utilized. He has fast tracked development of medical therapies and vaccines. He is working to limit our dependence on China for medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. And he is modeling a lifestyle that is not cowering in fear in isolation. He has called for governors to open up their states again.

  41. Posted July 23, 2020 at 5:11 pm | Permalink

But why wouldn’t he just talk about things to the extent you have? If you were president, you wouldn’t say what you say here? If not, why noT?

I’ve watched his press conferences. I’ve never heard him articulate what you have here on the strategy, or even summarize any comprehensive strategy. He rambles on and on about things that are of no help or even relevance really.

He has never taken the time to ask the public to consider the impact when the virus overwhelms hospitals and medical personnel.

He’s never articulated how best the country can keep as much as possible open by asking the vulnerable and infected to sacrifice by isolating.

  45. Posted July 23, 2020 at 5:38 pm | Permalink

Healthy persons under 70 have an extremely low risk of dying from exposure to this virus. Far more likely to die in a car accident. Yet people get in cars and drive every day.

Teachers are not really low risk. They always get all kinds of illnesses from their students every year. Unless their school districts are going to provide them with some very serious PPE, opening schools is going to put teachers at risk.

What is going to happen is a lot of teachers will quit because they can. They are well educated and have skills that transfer well to many other similar paying jobs. Making their jobs significantly more dangerous without increasing their pay is going to make move on.

I actually think that is by design. The schools will have to close due to a lack of teachers and subs. There will be a push to allow charter schools to have rules (or lack of rules) similar to private schools so that they can hire less-educated teachers at lower wages. A few people at the top of those for-profit charter schools will make big bucks and teaching will no longer be a job that gets someone solidly into the middle class.

It will also harm the most vulnerable in our society too. Children who have well-educated parents tend to thrive no matter what the educational environment is including, by the way, no school at all. I know people who totally subscribed to the whole “unschooling” concept. Their eldest daughter just graduated from UC-Berkeley in only three years. Turns out this is not atypical for homeschooled kids of educated parents.

    Robert,

I don’t want to do a few simple fucking things to slow the spread of a virus.

Except people are asked to do quite a bit more than a few simple things. Close all but a few essential businesses. Close schools. Eliminate most forms of recreation. Terrorize a population using constant streams of scare tactics and worse case scenarios. Print and distribute massive quantities of fiat money which will only destroy personal savings and result in out of control inflation and destruction of the middle class. Falsely convince people that our only hope will be mandatory vaccinations for everyone which will profit a few pharmaceutical firms, Bill Gates, and Fauci and in reality will not be effective at all. Print and distribute absentee ballots for every name on a voting list to facilitate voting fraud on a national level. Spend many hundreds of millions of dollars to instigate widespread vandalism in cities across our nation to further instill fears in the law abiding public. Organize political entities to decrease the funding for local police to protect its citizens from crime. Educate the masses in false histories designed to make citizens dislike their government making it easier get them to accept loss of freedoms. Destroy monuments of our founding fathers to further erode patriotism. Convince all major sports teams to support a group of communist activists and to kneel during the national anthem. And you useful idiots are convinced that this type of change is necessary. But once the new regime is in place and you realize that you have been used to put oppressive government in place, you will no longer have the freedom to protest or the means to throw off the shackles.

How would I know if I had time to respond to a particular misrepresentations prior to reading something? Am I supposed to assume that all comments from Wobblie have misrepresentations in them, about me, prior to reading his comments? I am supposed to have an estimate in my mind of how long it will take to respond to a misrepresentation prior to making the choice of reading vs not reading a particular comment? Do you see how you make no fucking sense?

    EOS,

If 90% of the population took every precaution to avoid catching and spreading the virus, we could keep the vast majority of business in operation.

Show me the video of Trump speaking to this. Show me the leadership moments you say in missing?

“ The only way to reopen the economy sustainably, many epidemiologists say, is first to crush the virus. “If we are not willing to social distance and wear face masks, more stringent lockdowns will be forthcoming,” Sung Won Sohn, an economist at Loyola Marymount University, said.”

    https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/507901-graham-releases-newly-declassified-documents-on-russia-probe

In one of the documents released by Graham, Peter Strzok, a former FBI agent, annotated a New York Times February 2017 article headlined “Trump Campaign Aides Had Repeated Contacts With Russian Intelligence.”

“This statement is misleading and inaccurate as written. We have not seen evidence of any individuals affiliated with the Trump team in contact with IOs,” one of Strzok’s annotations reads, referring to intelligence officers.

“Again we are unaware of ANY Trump advisors engaging in conversations with Russian intelligence officials,” he adds in another note.

They were sacrificed to the incompetence of the administration. With proper protective equipment and leadership in mobilizing the nation toward minimizing spread, this all could have been very different.

Business could have remained open had the federal government fully mobilized and had we had leaders who inspired people to take all proper precautions for minimizing the spread.

Howdy, very useful tool by researchers at Georgia Tech. You can see odds of being exposed to some one in a public space that has the trumpvirus. Wasthtenaw County is 62% in a public space with 100, but ONLY an 8% chance in a group of 10.
Would not want to live in Palm Beach County.

Wobblie, the Gatech tool is great. But I can’t find where the assumptions are for prevalence. The last paper I saw figured the actual numbers are 6-24 times the confirmed cases. So that assumed prevalence number is the main driver.
