Trump declines to say whether he will accept the 2020 election results if he loses

Donald Trump’s Fox News interview with Chris Wallace did not disappoint. It had everything that anyone could hope for. Trump lied about the mortality rate of COVID-19, rambled about our “beautiful world wars”, and doubled down on his claim that coronavirus is just “going to disappear”. And, of course, there was the part where the President bragged to Wallace about having passed a cognitive assessment that asked him to identify an elephant. While all of that, no doubt, would be fun to discuss, there was something said that I think is a lot more deserving of our attention. During the interview, Donald Trump insinuated that he might not accept the will of the American people and leave the White House if he loses in November. When asked by Wallace if he would accept the results, should Joe Biden win, Trump said, “It depends. I think mail-in voting is going to rig the election. I really do.” And this should scare the shit out of every sentient American… Here’s if you’ve yet to see the exchange, is the video.

And, no, I don’t think I’m overreacting when I say that this incredibly troubling. I know that there are safeguards in place that would make it incredibly difficult for an American president to attempt to stay in power after having lost an election. I also know, however, that a significant percentage of Americans believed Donald Trump in 2016, when he claimed, without evidence, that Hillary Clinton had only won the popular vote because of voter fraud, and I hesitate to think what they might do if he tells them that the election has been stolen. Personally, I believe that, if Trump loses in November, he’ll step down so that Pence can pardon him, but we can’t count on that. No, we need to ensure that Trump loses by such an overwhelming margin that no one believes him when he says that voter fraud was to blame. [Let’s remember that Trump’s special task force, which was launched to back-up the claim that he’d won the popular vote in 2016, was quietly disbanded, when they couldn’t find any real evidence of voter fraud having taken place.]

This isn’t going to be easy. Donald Trump, and those who support him, are not going to just walk away without a fight. He’s had nearly four years now to place his sycophants in positions of power, and they will do whatever they can to keep him in the White House. As for how far they’re willing to go, I think what we’re seeing play out right now on the streets of Portland, should give us a pretty good indication of how far they’re willing to go.

So, please, if you don’t already, get in the practice of waking up every morning, and starting each day by asking, “What will I do today to ensure that Donald Trump is a one term president?” And, then, for God’s sake, do it.

This interview Trump did with Chris Wallace is doing more damage to his support than the ads the Lincoln Project has been running. The Biden campaign couldn’t buy this kind of stuff. It’s devastating.

Trump has never made a mistake, ever. Everything he has ever been involved with has always been the most perfect, most amazing, most beautiful thing, ever. He is also the most popular, most beloved public figure, ever.

Not only does he actually seem to believe this nonsense, but he has surrounded himself with a cadre of ass-kissers who affirm these ideas all day long.

For Trump to acknowledge losing an election would require him to acknowledge that maybe, just perhaps, he made a mistake, or that just maybe the American people didn’t love him 100%.

There’s no way his self-image (ego) can ever reconcile these ideas. He is absolutely going to find some way to cling to power, and I suspect the Republicans, and possibly the Supreme Court, will find a way to let him do it.

One more thing: While many ordinary citizens have experienced the Trump administration as chaotic, and inept – behind the scenes, the people who actually own this country have been been busy taking advantage of the distraction to engineer and benefit from a literal orgy of tax cuts, deregulation, privatization, and outright handouts. These people know full well that Trump is a buffoon, but that hasn’t slowed them in working to steal virtually every public asset that isn’t nailed down. Do you think they’re going to give that up without a fight?

HW, what should we do if Trump appears to lose the election and says it was rigged? Should we form a militia and protect him to keep him in office?

As long as Trump’s rock-solid base refuses to change it’s mind, we will continue to have chaos. We thought we’d have a better time of things in the post-Bush years because we had elected Obama, and it was a little bit better overall, but Republicans managed to keep stirring the pot, and many good ideas never saw the light of legislation. With Biden as President, we will continue to witness this constant, disturbing undercurrent, because the GOP manages to spread chaos no matter what.

It was the only rational answer to the question. If there is evidence of widespread fraud, he won’t concede. But if it is a fair election, and if he loses, he would go.

What would likely happen if Biden gets indicted by a grand jury in August? Who is on deck?

  14. Posted July 20, 2020 at 12:17 pm | Permalink

An indictment would not get Biden to withdraw from the race. Most people would see the indictment as a political move.

Three years of Machel Maddow Russian conspiracy theories that Russia gifted the White House to Trump helped to set the stage for a likely non peaceful transition or retention of power. Perhaps the Machel Maddows of the world should take steps toward coming clean about their 3 year involvement in dangerous, unsubstantiated, propagandistic nonsense that have created these conditions? Just a thought.

I don’t think Maddow has set the stage for Trump to declare the election invalid just because he loses. Do you think he is going to claim Russian interference? All I know is that if he loses, it is very important that he leave the office. IF he doesn’t, someone is going to need to escort him out of the Whitehouse and straight into a prison cell.

    Lynne,

I think there will be problems regardless of who wins. Americans on all sides have no faith in democratic processes. My point is that one factor in eroding the faith in democratic processes is the 3 year long attempt to delegitimize the last election by the conspiracy theorist-propaganda-pushers like all the Machel Maddow.

Why do I get the feeling many of you people haven’t yet figured out that Maddow is a mega fraudster?

Aloha kinda like glenn beck and donald trump with their 8 year long campaign. I see what you are talking about.
As I said you are looking for reasons, as are EOS, HW and people Ive known since high school (50 years) to support an obvious power grab supported by a lame duck Senate. An impeached —rightly or wrongly—many of us anti-trump folks did not support impeachment. That is history. Do you support the police state being created today?

Yes. I have likened Maynard to Glenn Beck before. The difference is Glenn Beck was more creative whereas Maynard simply parrots pre-packages propaganda and conspiracy theories.

Regarding a Police State: I think there should be consequences for people who break the law. I do think things could go very sideways if we rely on federal officers to do what the police officers should be doing in the various Democrat run cities. It is a trap. It is theater. The Dems are trying to provoke Trump into a military style crackdown. The Dems are sacrificing the safety of many in their communities (mostly well intentioned youth) so they can capture some snapshots of militaristic tactics from federal officers.
