After months of the President promising that COVID-19 would just “disappear,” the White House Chief of Staff concedes, “We’re not going to control the pandemic”

Yesterday, as you can see in the above graphic from Detroit Channel 4, 3,338 new cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in Michigan, far exceeding anything we’ve seen during the earlier waves of the coronavirus pandemic. As our current fatality rate in the state is 4.7%, that essentially means that 157 Michiganders were told yesterday that they were going to die from a contagious disease that we could have stopped. [The county-specific data isn’t as current, but we know that Washtenaw County saw 84 new confirmed cases during the 24 hour period ending This past Thursday at 11:00 AM.]

On CNN’s State of the Union this morning, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said that there was nothing we could do to stop the spread of the disease at this point. “We’re not going to control the pandemic,” he conceded. This, of course, comes in sharp contrast to the many statements that Donald Trump has made over the past nine months about how the infectious respiratory disease was just going to magically “disappear.” Here’s Meadows talking with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

As for Trump, he still isn’t admitting the obvious. Yesterday, he was telling his followers on the campaign trail that the reason we’re seeing more COVID deaths in America isn’t because the disease is spreading, but because “doctors get more money, and hospitals get more money” when they say that people die from COVID, instead of from the other co-morbidities they might have had. And, of course, during last Thursday’s final presidential debate, he once again pushed for the full re-opening of public life in Michigan, saying that our state was “like a prison,” just because our governor has taken rudimentary steps to slow the spread of the deadly disease — rudimentary steps, by the way, that have made her the target of a kidnapping and assassination plot in the wake of the President’s demand that patriots “liberate” Michigan from her control. Here’s Trump on the campaign trail yesterday, spreading lies about the severity of COVID-19.

And, in spite of the current surge of cases in Michigan, Donald Trump has yet another rally planned in Lansing this coming Tuesday, where, no doubt, he will continue to lie about the disease that is spreading across the nation, killing our friends and family members. [Governor Whitmer has asked that he cancel it.]

All Trump had to do was listened to scientists, and urge the American people to wear masks in public. Instead, he chose to lie, push back against the advise of public health professionals, and politicize the wearing of masks. And, as of right now, over a quarter million American citizens are dead as a result. [As of today, 230,123 Americans have died from Coronavirus.]

Here, to end on a less depressing note, is what Kamala Harris, who spoke at Triumph Church in Detroit this morning, had to say about the virus. “Even in this moment of trial and testing,” she said, “I see people who are filled with strength and purpose… people who reject the notion that we cannot control this virus.

Here, speaking of Harris, is what she had to say about Trump’s handling of the pandemic upon landing in Detroit this morning.

Now please go out and vote, folks. And ask everyone you know to do the same. It’s too fucking important to sit this one out. We owe it to our children, parents, and grandparents to see this ugly chapter of American history brought to a decisive end.

White House predicts 100,000 to 240,000 will die in US from coronavirus

If Trump had not been elected, untold millions of people would have died. This is a fact.

Also, had he not raped the women that he “allegedly” raped, who’s to say that even worse things might not have happened to them? Had E Jean Carroll not been “allegedly” raped by Donald Trump in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan, who’s to say that she might not have left the store earlier, only to have had an air conditioning unit fall on her head, killing her instantly?

    That’s very true, John Galt.

Also, as Trump pointed out at the last debate, it’s Obama and Biden’s fault that he is president. He only ran because of them. So everything that’s gone to shit over the last three years is ultimately their fault.

I just hope that it will not be too late in January for a President Biden to get control of things!

Trump says he’s done a good job. He says almost nobody has done better. The U.S. is in the top ten countries in worst death rates. And two countries that are worse are small city-states with fewer people than Washtenaw County has.

Here are some per capita death totals:

    696 USA
    586 Sweden
    263 Canada
    51 Norway
    14 Japan
    9 South Korea
    0.3 Taiwan

    Deaths per million population.

That’s right. Taiwan, a country of almost 24 million, has only 0.3 deaths per million population.

The death cult is condemning all future generations. It will be known as the trumpvirus and this along with our inaction on climate change will cause them to curse us for our defeatist inaction.

We dont know shit about the long term consequences of this virus. The Republican party needs to be obliterated and its supporters driven back under the rocks from which they came.

According to this press release, the pandemic is over. Ivanka says so. If you can’t find it at the White House website, thank goodness for the memory of the press and the internet. Other highlights include understanding our planet to protect it for our children and Space Force.

Trump is on his way to Oakland County Airport in Waterford to hold another rally. I strongly urge HW, EOS and FF to attend. Don’t bother to wear a mask. They don’t do anything anyway. And it makes you look like a Democrat, or a socialist.

Tomorrow you’ll be able to attend a big Halloween party with your fellow Trump supporters. You got to live a little.

Trump said doctors are paid to designate a death as a COVID-19 death. EOS and HW were cheering.

Sane people had a different response.

    From AMA President:

Trump’s claim that doctors overcount covid-19 patients for more money is malicious, outrageous

I have seen how smart people behave. They frequently learn from other peoples mistakes, instead of making the same ones–how my life could have been different if I had figured that out earlier

Canadians celebrate their Thanksgiving at the end of October. So we can pretty well see what is going to happen to the US over the next month.

of course we are starting from a much higher plateau.

Does EOS have a little better idea about what competence might look like and the difference it makes when a country has competent national leadership?

I’m guessing not. His brain seems too rotted. But I’d still think it’s worth asking. Who knows. There’s a very slim chance he might actually have the capacity to learn.

This is not looking good, and its not even turkey day yet,

I wonder what ol herd immunity EOS thinks of the new Brazilian variant. I remember s/he was also counting on the virus mutating into a more benign form. Of course there is no control on natural mutations, and now we have one more infectious, just as deadly, and seems to not care if you have antibodies from other strains. A practical worse case scenario.

  15. Posted January 29, 2021 at 8:11 am | Permalink

The other interesting development is the growing recognition that the virus maybe just as much a neurological disease as pulmonary. This is distressing on numerous levels, 1) being the immune antibody response functions at a much reduced level in the brain. This is why taste and smell are effected–the nervous system is under attack. 2) One theory about the reemergence of infection in previously infected individuals who tested negative and subsequently began testing positive again is the virus “hides” among the nerves within the brain (much like the HIV virus).
Will the criminals who decided to politized our public health response and failed in their duty to protect against all enemies ever be held to account? not holding my breath.

I don’t think so, wobblie. Heck, I was just reading a report about how many lives Whitmer has saved with certain policies. The response to that report has been people calling her a “nazi” and supporting the legislature in their attempts to get power away from her. If anything, the politicians who have done their duty to protect us are going to get punished.
