As neo-Nazis come to Trump’s defense, the United States House of Representatives condemns his blatant racism in a 240 to 187 vote

Today, while Kellyanne Conway demanded to know the ethnicity of a reporter questioning her outside the White House and Mitch McConnell dodged questions about how he’d take it of someone told his Asian wife “go back” to Taiwan, the Democratic-led House of Representatives passed Resolution 489 condemning our racist President for telling four freshman Congresswomen of color to “go back” to the “crime infested” countries they come from. [As we discussed yesterday, three of the four women in question were actually born right here, in the United States of America.] The resolution passed in a 240 to 187 vote with only five non-Democrats supporting the measure.

Of the five non-Democrats to support the resolution, two are from here in Michigan; Justin Amash, who just recently left the Republican Party with a call for Trump’s impeachment, and Fred Upton, who today called the President’s most recent comments “unacceptable.” As for the remaining three, the first, Will Hurd (TX), is the sole black Republican member of the House of Representatives, the second, Susan Brooks (IN), has already announced that she won’t be running for reelection, and the third, Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), is a former FBI agent. Every other Republican in the House of Representatives chose to vote against this resolution reaffirming the value and rights of immigrants, and condemning racism.

Here, if you’ve yet to see it, is how the resolution begins.

The resolution goes on to say…

Whereas Benjamin Franklin said at the Constitutional convention, “When foreigners after looking about for some other Country in which they can obtain more happiness, give a preference to ours, it is a proof of attachment which ought to excite our confidence and affection”;

Whereas President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists”;

Whereas immigration of people from all over the Earth has defined every stage of American history and propelled our social, economic, political, scientific, cultural, artistic, and technological progress as a people, and all Americans, except for the descendants of Native people and enslaved African Americans, are immigrants or descendants of immigrants;

Whereas the commitment to immigration and asylum has been not a partisan cause but a powerful national value that has infused the work of many Presidents;

Whereas American patriotism is defined not by race or ethnicity but by devotion to the Constitutional ideals of equality, liberty, inclusion, and democracy and by service to our communities and struggle for the common good;

Whereas President John F. Kennedy, whose family came to the United States from Ireland, stated in his 1958 book “A Nation of Immigrants” that “The contribution of immigrants can be seen in every aspect of our national life. We see it in religion, in politics, in business, in the arts, in education, even in athletics and entertainment. There is no part of our nation that has not been touched by our immigrant background. Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life.”;

Whereas President Ronald Reagan in his last speech as President conveyed “An observation about a country which I love”;

Whereas as President Reagan observed, the torch of Lady Liberty symbolizes our freedom and represents our heritage, the compact with our parents, our grandparents, and our ancestors, and it is the Statue of Liberty and its values that give us our great and special place in the world;

Whereas other countries may seek to compete with us, but in one vital area, as “a beacon of freedom and opportunity that draws the people of the world, no country on Earth comes close”;

Whereas it is the great life force of “each generation of new Americans that guarantees that America’s triumph shall continue unsurpassed” through the 21st century and beyond and is part of the “magical, intoxicating power of America”;

Whereas this is “one of the most important sources of America’s greatness: we lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people — our strength — from every country and every corner of the world, and by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation”;

Whereas “thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we’re a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge”, always leading the world to the next frontier;

Whereas this openness is vital to our future as a Nation, and “if we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost”; and

Whereas President Donald Trump’s racist comments have legitimized fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives—

(1) believes that immigrants and their descendants have made America stronger, and that those who take the oath of citizenship are every bit as American as those whose families have lived in the United States for many generations;

(2) is committed to keeping America open to those lawfully seeking refuge and asylum from violence and oppression, and those who are willing to work hard to live the American Dream, no matter their race, ethnicity, faith, or country of origin; and

(3) strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the President like immigrants, should “go back” to other countries, by referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as “invaders,” and by saying that Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America.

Personally, I don’t know what good this resolution will do, but I like the fact that Democrats are apparently beginning to take their oversight role seriously, and I hope that, perhaps, this could help move them down a path that leads to a legitimate, and much needed, impeachment inquiry. And, regardless, it’s just good to have the names of these 187 House Republicans on record as having voted against the above resolution, which should, in itself, be enough to keep them from ever holding elected office again… History, one hopes, will hold them accountable, even if we’re incapable of doing so right now.

As for Trump, he’s doubling down. When asked today if he regretted the comments, he responded, “It doesn’t concern me because a lot of people agree with me.” And he’s right. A lot of people do agree with him. Today, for instance, Andrew Anglin, the founder of the popular neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, announced with enthusiasm, “This is the kind of white nationalism we elected him for.” [If you support the President, you stand with the neo-Nazis. Know that.]

A racist Donald Trump tells four freshman Congresswomen of color to “go back” to the “crime infested” countries they come from. Three of the four, however, were born in the United States.

This morning, President Donald Trump posted a series of racist tweets directed at freshman Democratic Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who have collectively become known as “the squad.” In his online tirade against the progressive lawmakers, several of whom have called for his impeachment, the President said that the four women of color should “go back” to where they came from, rightfully angering non-racists across the country.

Of the four elected officials that Donald Trump said should “go back” to “the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came”, three were actually born right here in the United States. [Omar, a Somali refugee, immigrated to the United States at 10, and became a U.S. citizen at 17. The other three members of “the squad” were born here, in the United States.] So, when Donald Trump says that they should go back to the “totally broken and crime infested” places they come from, he’s talking about the United States of America in three out of four cases.

But, as we know, reality doesn’t really matter to Donald Trump, the members of his racist base, or the hosts on FOX News, who are only too happy to share his racist lies, while laughing along. Sure, it may not be the real, actual truth when Donald Trump says that they’ll all from “totally broken and crime infested” countries, but there’s an “emotional truth” to it, the same way there was an “emotional truth” to Trump’s birther lie about Barack Obama having been born in Kenya. In the end, to members of the MAGA base, it doesn’t really matter where these people of color are actually from. All that matters is that they’re not like us. They aren’t the kind of good, white, America-loving citizens that make this country great… And, given that, they might just as well have been raised in the kinds of “totally broken and crime infested” non-white countries that Donald Trump refers to as “shitholes“.

Here’s the response from Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan’s 13th congressional district.

And, here, from the New York Times, is a bit of context: “Delivered on the day he had promised widespread immigration raids, Mr. Trump’s comments signaled a new low in how far he will go to affect public discourse surrounding the issue. In a week in which he waged a fight about putting a citizenship question on the 2020 census and hosted incendiary right-wing internet figures at the White House, Mr. Trump appeared resigned to force 2020 voters to choose between the white, native-born America he and his supporters have romanticized and the diverse and increasingly foreign-born country he is presiding over.”

As for why Donald Trump is doing this, I think the answer is clear. He’s a fucking racist. As for why he’s doing it now, and doing it so blatantly, my sense is that he’s seen the most recent polling data, which shows him losing by huge margins to the likes of Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders in the general election, and he’s come to realize that his message of no health care and greater wealth disparity just isn’t working with voters. So, he’s going all-in on a platform of racial animus, and white victimhood.

In the past few days, as news has continued to come out about the the inhumane conditions at migrant detention facilities along the southern border, Donald Trump has done nothing to remedy the situation, instead announcing new ICE raids, and inviting racists, conspiracy theorists and lunatics to the White House to discuss the 2020 campaign. And things, I’m afraid, are just going to get worse, as I see no Republicans standing up to him to stop it. In fact, many, like Lindsey Graham, are actually supporting him, calling these Congresswomen “anti-American” and “communists”.

The little girl is 15

My daughter, Clementine, completed her 15th trip around the sun this morning at 8:23 AM. I’d like to say how proud I am of her, how much my heart swells whenever I think about her, and how confident I am that she’ll grow up to do great things, but, as I know that she’d absolutely hate it if I did any of those things, I’ll instead just share a few family photos. [While I have a policy against showing my kids on this site in real time, I’ve decided that it’s OK to share photos of what they looked like a while a go, before they morphed into who they are today. So, with that in mind, the most recent of these shots is from about three years ago. You’ll have to take my word for it when I tell you that her evolution has continued since then with the speed of an alien xenomorph.]

Polishing shoes for the first time in my life

I got my first real, decent pair of shoes about six months ago, on my 51st birthday. They were a gift from Linette and the kids, and I’ve worn them just about every day since I got them. They’re black leather shoes, and they’re nicer than anything I ever would have gotten for myself… Well, a few weeks ago, a guy at work stopped by my desk, asked me about them, and, then, in the nicest way possible, suggested that I should take better care of them, saying that, if I did, they could last for decades. So, I did a little research, ordered some Blackrock Leather ‘N’ Rich, and spent this evening on my porch, polishing my shoes while listening to the Flaming Groovies and James Brown. It’s a small thing, but, as I’ve never talked about shoe polishing on the site, I thought that I’d mention it. So, if you’ve been waiting for the last 16 years for me to post something about shoe polishing, or the perfect music to polish shoes by, here’s your opportunity!

Or, if you don’t have anything to say about the proper care of quality leather footwear, I guess we could talk about dementia, and the fact that our President said the following today when announcing the launch of a new government program to address kidney disease. “You’ve worked so hard on the kidney,” Donald Trump told the assembled White House guests. “Very special — the kidney has a very special place in the heart. It’s an incredible thing.” Personally, I think this can best be explained by stupidity, but consensus – at least judging by Twitter – seems to be that it’s dementia. At any rate, I suspect we can come to a consensus in the comments section and put this to rest once and for all. So, have at it.

The “great blessing” of not being able to retire, and dying in the workplace

On the Fox Business Network yesterday, in a conversation about how nearly one-in-four Americans now believe that they’ll have to work right up until the point of death, without ever being able to retire, the following was said by Donald Luskin, CEO of a company called Trendmacro, and author of the e-book I Am John Galt: Today’s Heroic Innovators Building the World and the Villainous Parasites Destroying It.

According to recent polling, the only way Donald Trump will win in 2020 is if he can convince American voters that the election is a referendum on Socialism, and I understand why that is. I get that ours is a culture that values the heroic ideal of unfettered individualism [“Innovators Building the World”], and looks with suspicion at those who, instead, advocate for the greater collective good [“Villainous Parasites Destroying It”], but I really don’t see how fear of Socialism alone can carry an election where the other side is actually saying that we should be happy for the opportunity to work until the day that we clutch at our hearts for the last time and fall over dead. If that’s the alternative to Socialism, I think I’d pick Socialism every fucking time… I don’t want my kids to have the “opportunity” to work in coal mines, I don’t want to experience the exhilarating “freedom” of living without health care, and I don’t want my parents to enjoy the “blessing” of not being able to experience even a year of retirement before they die. And I really don’t think that I’m alone.

Here, if you’ve yet to see it, is footage of Luskin making the case for dying at 83, hunched over a machine on a factory floor.
