Daniel Johnston’s “Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness”

One of my favorite musicians, Daniel Johnston, turned 50 yesterday, and, to show their appreciation, a lot of his fans pledged money through Kickstarter so that he might be able to publish his first real comic book. Here’s a little video on the project, followed by a little more in the way of background. If you want to join in, it looks as though they’re still about $2,500 away from their goal of $10,000.

We’re bringing the long awaited first full-length comic book by legendary musician and artist Daniel Johnston to his loyal fans. Donations will fund the creation, production, and manufacture of “Daniel Johnston’s Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness.”

The project will be much more than just a standard comic book…although a standard comic book by Daniel Johnston would be anything but standard and certainly worth funding. The “Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness” will combine the unique and brilliant characters, images and words of Daniel Johnston along with Daniel’s amazing music, and the musical and artistic contributions of fans, to create a one-of-a-kind interactive comic book experience.

In addition to a printed version that will model the classic comic book formats of DC and Marvel, the “Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness” will enjoy a second, more in-depth, life online. Through a special access code featured in the printed version of the comic book, fans will be able to download accompanying music and view additional story lines and other imaginative content. Ongoing interactive features will provide a viewing and listening experience that is…well…infinite.

Happy anniversary Citizens United, here’s our country on a silver platter

It’s been exactly a year since our Supreme Court, in a controversial 5-4 decision, ruled that corporate spending on political campaigns needed to be protected as though it were the free speech of an American citizen. The decision in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission case has, among other things, made it unconstitutional to place any limits the amount of money spent by corporations and anonymous groups to influence political races. The resulting change in campaign spending was enormous, and the folks at the watchdog group Public Citizen have just issued a report detailing the shift. Following are just a few of their findings:

• Spending by outside groups jumped to $294.2 million in the 2010 election cycle from just $68.9 million in the 2006 cycle. The uncharacteristically high spending in 2010 presages blockbuster spending in the upcoming 2012 elections;

• Nearly half of the money spent ($138.5 million, or 47.1 percent) came from only 10 groups;

• Groups that did not provide any information about their sources of money collectively spent $135.6 million – 46.1 percent of the total spent by outside groups during the election cycle;

• Two “Crossroads” groups formed by Republican strategist Karl Rove combined to spend $38.2 million, more than any single group. Next was the U.S. Chamber of Commerce at $31.2 million; and

• Of 75 congressional contests in which partisan power changed hands, spending by outside groups favored the winning candidate in 60 contests.

So, have you got that? Corporations spent hundreds of millions of dollars more on attack ads this past electoral cycle, and, in 60 of 75 congressional races, the winner was the candidate with the most corporate money.

One would think the American people would like to know about this, but apparently all the investigative power of our corporate media is being channeled to England, in an attempt to determine where Prince William’s fiance is getting her wedding dress from.

Judge Rules White Girl Will Be Tried As Black Adult

I think this makes a nice companion piece to last week’s discussion on the case of Davontae Sanford.

Goodbye Olbermann, hello Comcast

Keith Olbermann was let go from MSNBC yesterday. I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of his Murrow-aping delivery, but I liked knowing that he was out there every night, calling the conservatives out on their bullshit. He was, as far as I know, the first person in the media to speak up against George Bush, and, for that, he will always have my admiration… At any rate, here he is, saying goodbye.

As Countdown was, I believe, the number one show on the network, one suspects that the cancellation wasn’t about ratings. I’d like to think that it wasn’t over Olbermann’s politics, but I don’t see how it could be anything else. And, it does look incredibly suspicious, given that the NBC Comcast merger was just given the green light by the FCC a few days ago. If I’m not mistaken, this is exactly the kind of thing that Al Franken warned us about. I just wonder what kind of effect this will have on the remaining MSNBC hosts, like Rachel Maddow.

From Wired:

…“Keith Olbermann’s announcement tonight, the very same week that the government blessed the Comcast-NBC merger, raises serious concern for anyone who cares about free speech,” Marvin Ammori, the University of Nebraska law school professor and free speech advocate, told Wired.com by email.

“Comcast proved expert in shaking down the government to approve its merger,” Ammori said. “Comcast’s shakedown of NBC has just begun.”

Philadelphia-based Comcast, the largest cable and broadband provider in the United States, is controlled by the wealthy, politically-connected Roberts family…

It looks to me as though the MSNBC threat has been sufficiently contained… Good work, Washington!
