The Survival Seed scam

Last night, on my way home from work, I was listening to our resident rightwing radio personality Thayrone X, which I occasionally do when I find myself becoming too optimistic about humanity’s chances, when a commercial came on about the importance of heirloom, non-genetically modified seeds. For a second, I thought that perhaps I’d stumbled onto a small sliver of common ground between my reality-based, progressive world, and that inhabited by the Tea Partiers, but, as the radio spot kept unwinding, I realized that probably wasn’t the case. Here, if you want to see what I’m talking about, is a television ad by the same company, Solutions from Science:

So, it’s not so much about providing good, fresh food for your family, and keeping heirloom varieties of plants in use, as it is about positioning yourself to do better than your neighbors when the “emerging totalitarianism” comes into full bloom. Here, on that subject, is a clip from the company’s website:

…You don’t have to be an Old Testament prophet to see what’s going on all around us. A desperate lower class demanding handouts. A rapidly diminishing middle class crippled by police state bureaucracy. An aloof, ruling elite that has introduced us to an emerging totalitarianism which seeks control over every aspect of our lives.

…So here’s the deal: I’m trying to get the word out before the food crisis becomes too apparent to the general public and there is a run on these seed banks. I’ve decided to sell the Survival Seed Bank™ at a discounted price to our customers who use this website to order.

As FED induced inflation sends shock waves through agricultural commodity prices, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see this same Survival Seed Bank selling for $1000.00 or more in just a few short years. Please understand, once the average guy on the street realizes food prices are headed for the moon, it may in fact be too late. Too late in the game to not only buy seeds wholesale, but it may be too late to even get seeds! Period. You see, the worldwide inventory of premium-grade vegetable seed isn’t large enough to supply a panicked population, supplies will simply run out.

But right now, for Solutions From Science customers, as long as you buy online from this site, I will send you the entire one-acre Crisis Garden for just-

$149.00
(For as long as we can keep them in stock!)

That’s less than half of what everyone less would have to pay if they bought “germination-tested” heirloom seeds like this at full retail. So I’m making this “extra” discounted offer because our current customers deserve “first dibs” on something this important….

So, I guess, now that they’ve got all the terrified suckers invested in overpriced gold, convinced that American paper currency won’t be any damned good once the end times are upon us, they’ve decided to switch the game around a bit and milk them for a little bit more… “Sure, you’ve got gold, but you can’t eat gold, can you? What you need are seeds. Seeds are the currency of the future!

So, basically they’ve taken something that could have been incredibly positive – a movement to relocalize food production and take it out of the hands of mono-cropping factory farms – and they’ve twisted it. They’ve taken Victory Gardens, and made them Crisis Gardens. And, yes, that’s the terminology that they use.

One thing they never touch on, though, is how you’re supposed to guard your acre of heirloom vegetables once all your neighbors turn into to starving Socialist zombies. Maybe the next wave of ads will be for bulk gun power and NoDoz pills, which, as we all know, will be the real currency of the new, post-Democracy world.

update: OK, I take it all back. Now that I’ve studied the situation a bit more carefully, I can totally appreciate the truly fantastic offer these folks are making. In fact, I’m thinking about joining their distributor network.

Since we haven’t had a good Glenn Beck thread in a while…

We can argue all day all day long as to whether or not Sarah Palin’s violent imagery and rhetoric contributed in any way to Jared Loughner’s decision last week to kill his Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords. What can’t be argued, however, is that, several months ago, Palin’s fellow Fox News personality, Glenn Beck, played a pivotal role in another man’s decision to murder the staff of the Tides Foundation. The man’s name is Byron Williams, and, after hearing Beck rant on several occasions about the progressive foundation and their aspirations of Socialist revolution, he armed himself and headed toward their offices in San Francisco. Fortunately, he was apprehended en route, before he could reach his destination. Asked about Beck’s influence, after being arrested for shooting two police officers, Byron said, “it was the things that he did, it was the things he exposed that blew my mind.” Here, speaking of mind blowing, is a clip of Beck’s show from June, just weeks before Byron was apprehended. Make of it what you will.

And, here it is in context:

“Just because you in Washington and you who are so out of touch with life in the media, just because you don’t believe in anything doesn’t mean nobody else does. We do. You know why you’re confused by this show? It’s because I believe in something. You don’t. Tea parties believe in small government. We believe in returning to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We respect them. We revere them. Shoot me in the head before I stop talking about the Founders. Shoot me in the head if you try to change our government. I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don’t. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep’s clothing — change the pose. You will get the ends. You’ve been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you. They are dangerous because they believe. Karl Marx is their George Washington. You will never change their mind. And if they feel you have lied to them — they’re revolutionaries. Nancy Pelosi, those are the people you should be worried about. Here is my advice when you’re dealing with people who believe in something that strongly — you take them seriously. You listen to their words and you believe that they will follow up with what they say.”

My point in mentioning this is just to remind folks that we did have a very real, serious warning prior to what happened in Arizona last week. Laughner’s attack was not an isolated event. There have been others, and we have every reason to believe that they will continue.

Governor Snyder delivers first State-of-the-State address

I’m too sleepy to watch it all right now… If you could watch it and let me know what you think, I’d appreciate it.

Here, before I drift off, I’ll get the ball rolling with something positive. I like his pro-immigration stance. With so many states flying the anti-immigration banner these days, I like the idea that Michigan could distinguish itself as immigrant-friendly. As the only state in the nation losing population, it only makes sense. And, if we’re going to turn the economy here around, we’re going to need knowledge workers, from wherever we can get them, who will stay here and put down roots.

Will Wikileaks revelations on wealthy tax dodgers motivate Americans to take action?

I’ve got two great videos that I want to share with you today. The first, from Dylan Ratigan’s show on MSNBC, pertains to the most recent chapter in the Wikileaks saga. For those of you who haven’t heard, Julian Assanage, the man behind Wikileaks, called a press conference a few days ago to say that, thanks to a former Swiss banker by the name of Rudolph M. Elmer, he would soon be announcing the names of over 2,000 high net worth individuals and companies hiding money in offshore bank accounts, in violation of American and English tax law. (The list, we’re told, among other things, contains the names of at least 40 politicians.) Joining Ratigan in the clip is Johann Hari, a reporter for the British paper The Independent. Hari, during the course of discussing this most recent Wikileaks revelation, shares the story of what’s presently going on England, where it was recently uncovered that the corporation Vodaphone was hiding revenue to the tune of several billion pounds. (It’s estimated that Vodaphone owes £6bn in taxes on these profits which they attempted to hide in offshore accounts.) Apparently, when this became known, there were mass protests, which shut down Vodaphone locations in 52 cities across Britain. Following, by way of background, is a clip from Infoshop News:

The UK has seen a wave of high-street demonstrations under the banner of the UK uncut campaign, many of which have been organised locally following call outs distributed through the internet. The protests have seen a number of stores associated with Tax-Dodging picketed, occupied and flyered in cities and towns up and down the country.

The targets of the campaign have been pretty specific. The most high-profile company to be taken on has been the UK-based telecoms giant Vodafone, which is the most profitable mobile phone operator in the world. Earlier in the year veteran investigative magazine Private Eye broke a story on Vodafone’s successful tax-dodging, which had involved setting up a subsidiary company in Luxembourg purely to route profits from the company’s acquisition of Mannesman through a country with a more agreeable tax regime. After a lengthy legal battle, which apparently was going HMRC’s way, the taxman agreed to let Vodafone pay a tax bill of £1.2 billion, rather than the full £6 billion in estimated tax. Vodafone have since dismissed the £6 billion figure as a “urban myth”, despite the fact their accountants projected for it in their own bookeeping. Understandably, the story produced a groundswell of anger, of which these demonstrations are a product…

And it’s this public uprising against Vodaphone that you’ll see in the second video.

My question is this… Assuming Assanage isn’t paid off or killed in the next few weeks, and the names of these tax-dodging individuals and companies are made public, is it likely that Americans will respond as the English have? When confronted with evidence that the rich aren’t paying their fair share, will Americans take to the streets? I’d like to think that the answer is yes, but I suspect that we won’t. Hopefully, though, I’ll be proven wrong. Hopefully, people will be able to make the connection between the fact that these high net worth individuals aren’t paying their taxes and the growing reality in America that our kids’ teachers are being laid-off and our social safety net is being slashed to shreds. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Totally Quotable Clementine: overheard at a playdate edition

clmbuffalo2

Not too long ago, I introduced Clementine to one of my favorite movies – a 1941 film by the name of Sullivan’s Travels. I guess it made an impact. This afternoon, Linette heard Clementine tell her friend Amelia that she wanted to play house as Veronica Lake, which, of course, made me feel incredibly proud, until I thought about the mental illness and the alcoholism.

[Speaking of Lake, who, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful women of all times, I was wondering if anyone out there might know how I could go about getting a video of her hour-long interview with Dick Cavett from 1972. I’m kind of scared to see it, as I have this image of her in my mind that I’d like to protect, but I feel compelled to see what she was like at the end of her life, after having fought addiction and mental illness for so many years.]
