7 days, 10 states, 2,0000 miles… Yee Haw!

I’d like to tell you all about this summer’s big road trip with Linette and Clementine, but right now I just need to sleep. Check back tomorrow for details on Pittsburgh, Savannah and Knoxville… In the meantime, leave a comment and let me know if I missed anything interesting. (I seem to recall having heard on the radio something about Obama hating cops.)

OK, here’s one thing…. In Knoxville, where we stayed last night, we spent some time with the folks at the incredibly cool letterpress shop Yee-Haw Industries. If you haven’t heard about Yee-Haw, they’re being given a lot of credit for putting Knoxville back on the map, doing really interesting design and printing work for tons of bands, political candidates and the like. (When we were there, they were running a huge job for Real Simple magazine.) And it’s not just the local hipster Yelpers that are ecstatic about their work – they just received some coverage recently in the New York Times, where they were called out as one of the best places to spend time in Knoxville. (I think it may have been the same article that called Knoxville ‘Austin without the hype.’) I could go on and on about how awesome their collection of vintage letterpress gear is, or how incredibly awe-inspiring their work is, but I’ll just encourage you to follow the links and see for yourself.

On a local note, it was hard for me to stand in the Yee Haw store, flipping though examples of their work, and not imagine that Ypsi’s custom screen printing shop VG Kids could one day be such a cultural destination. I know that their vision right now doesn’t include retail, but, when I see what the folks at Yee Haw have accomplished, it makes me wonder if perhaps VG could inspire the same kind of interest on the screen printing side of things. Linette and I actually stopped in Knoxville because of Yee Haw. And, not only did we spend quite a bit of money there, buying their work for wedding presents, but we also got a room around the corner at the excessively quirky St Oliver, and ate at a great little restaurant called Tomato Head. We pumped hundreds of bucks into the Knoxville economy, and it was mostly due to Yee Haw. And, the weird thing is, I don’t think we’re the only ones. My sense is that a lot of folks get off the highway and make their way into Knoxville for the very same reason. And, I’d like to think that perhaps the same thing could be possible here in Ypsi. When you think about it, it doesn’t take a lot to reach critical mass… A company breathing new life into a relatively well established creative industry, a vegan-friendly restaurant approaching food differently, a quirky, inexpensive hotel, a few cool bars – that’s about it. That’s all you really need to convince someone to stop and spend a night on their way from Toronto to Chicago…. Anyway, I think it’s worth considering.

OK, and on that note, I really do need to go to bed… Oh, and here’s a photo of Yee Haw.

Birthers and healthcare reform

Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering if this new bout of wing-nuttery over Obama’s birth certificate has anything to do with the healthcare debate? It seems as though “birthers” are bubbling up everywhere in the press these days, and I have to think it’s not just a coincidence that we’re hearing it now. I’m not suggesting that it’s a huge, orchestrated plan, but, given that healthcare firms are pouring unprecedented sums of money into anti-healthcare reform initiatives, one has to wonder if there might also be a somewhat deliberate campaign afoot to delegitimize the President. I haven’t seen polling data on the subject, but my guess is that most people, even though they know the claims of Liddy, Dobbs and company are complete bullshit, still wonder if maybe there’s a remote chance that Obama is, as Liddy states, an “illegal alien” born in a “Kenyan slum.” And, yes, I realize this makes me sound almost as nutty as those claiming that Obama forged his birth documents and the notices of his birth in Hawaiian newspapers, but isn’t it conceivable that, with so many billions of dollars on the line, people are going after him where they perceive him as being vulnerable? I mean, with the healthcare industry losing the battle of facts, is it so hard to imagine that they might ask a few of the media channels that they supply with advertising dollars to mention that there’s a debate as to whether or not Obama is really an American citizen? If nothing else, it muddies the water and momentarily diverts attention.

And, here, while we’re on the subject of birthers, is a little something from Jon Stewart.

Lusting after furries apparently isn’t anything new

furry

I know that this will only reinforce the mistaken notion that I myself am a “furry,” but I couldn’t resist documenting this as I was making my way through the Egyptian annex of a Pittsburgh history museum a few days ago… How could I not? Did you see it? It’s a guy with a fucking boner chasing a dude in a dog mask!

I’ll be posting my other Pittsburgh photos later. I just had to get this one up tonight as it was incredibly timely, what with all the talk of national healthcare for furries, and the like.

Another bathroom interview

A few days ago, I posted an interview here that I did in the bathroom of the Corner Brewery. I didn’t set out to conduct an interview in the men’s room. It just kind of happened. I was washing my hands and talking with my friend Ryan, when it occurred to me that I had my camera in my pocket, and that it shot short videos. Anyway, that’s how it started. And, now, after a day spent in the sun and a few glasses of wine, I’m thinking that it might not have been too bad of an idea. In fact, I haven’t mentioned it to the owners of the Brewery yet, but I’m thinking that I might like to host a talk show from their restroom. I figure all I’d need would be a few chairs, maybe a fern, and someone to hold the camera… Or maybe I’ll just sit it on the edge of the urinal, point it in our direction, and hope for the best… Anyway, look for more bathroom interviews in the future, assuming Linette or some other smart person doesn’t talk me out of it.

Here’s another idea… What if I interview the same person a number of times, but each interview is done in a different bathroom? I wonder how many public restrooms there are in Ypsi anyway…

OK, with all of this in mind, I have a second episode to share with you tonight. This one was also shot on the day of the Shadow Art Fair, and it features Forest Juziuk, who was supposed to be performing comedy in the beer garden with his friend Brian Hunter that evening, between the folk/noise mash-ups.

I should point out that I was reluctant to post this, and only decided to do so after Forest talked with Brian and got his OK… I don’t, as a rule, like inferring that friends’ relatives have died in Satanic rituals – at least not publicly.
