This is fascism, right?

[above: U.S. Attorney General William Barr winks at Donald Trump moments after the President announces that, as part of his new Combatting Violent Crime in American Cities initiative, federal officers will be deployed to more American cities to put down what he describes as a “radical movement” to “defund, dismantle and dissolve our police departments.”]

This afternoon, in the East Room of the White House, accompanied by Acting Director of Homeland Security Chad Wolf and Attorney General William Barr — and with the election less than four months away — Donald Trump announced “a surge of federal law enforcement into American communities,” which he claimed were, “plagued by violent crime.” And first on this list of newly targeted cities, of course, was Chicago, a city that Donald Trump has often called out in the past in his stream-of-consciousness rants meant to resonate with the ‘paranoids, kooks, know-nothings and bigots‘ who have chosen to remain in his party of white grievance.

“(The) Department of Justice will immediately surge federal law enforcement to the city of Chicago,” he said. “The FBI, ATF, DEA, U.S. Marshals Service, and Homeland Security will together be sending hundreds of skilled law enforcement officers to Chicago to help drive down violent crime” and quell what he referred to as a “radical movement” to “defund, dismantle and dissolve our police departments.” Here’s the video.

And, here, for those of you who might not have a dictionary handy, is the Merriam-Webster definition of fascism: “a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.” And it’s that last part, that I’d like to focus on right now.

Donald Trump is not putting federal officers on the ground in Chicago because he cares about the young black men who are dying there every day as a result of gang violence. If he were, he would have sent them in 2017, when the murder rate was higher. No, he’s sending troops now because he knows that footage of officers hitting protesters with clubs plays well with his white, middle-aged, law-and-order-loving base, and because he’d do absolutely anything to keep people from discussing the fact that ICU beds are filling up and 146,183 Americans are now dead from a disease that he failed to control — a disease that he assured us would just “disappear”.

If Donald Trump really wanted to stop the violence in Chicago, he’d send social workers into the communities where the violence is happening, and open up funding to organizations creating jobs in the area. Instead, he’s sending armed officers in riot gear to put down protests. And that should tell you everything you need to know about what’s happening right now and why. As Tom Ridge, the first Secretary of Homeland Security warned a few days ago, “The department (of Homeland Security) was established to protect America from the ever-present threat of global terrorism. It was not established to be the president’s personal militia.” And that’s exactly what’s happening right now in cities like Portland and Chicago. Donald Trump has so thoroughly taken over the Department Homeland Security and the Department of Justice, that he’s able to use their officers in this way, for what are clearly political purposes. [Ridge, a former two-term Republican governor of Pennsylvania, also said, “It would be a cold day in hell before I would consent to an uninvited, unilateral intervention into one of my cities.”]

This is clearly about politics. Donald Trump said himself yesterday that these federal campaigns were being targeted at what he referred to as poorly-run “Democrat” cities. Again, this isn’t about stopping violence, or providing help that these communities so desperately need. This is about showing himself to be a strong “law and order” leader, and riling up the base for war.

Trump needed something bold.

Do you remember, during the midterms, when he warned about caravans of diseased and violent gang members who were heading toward our border — caravans that never actually materialized? Well, this is the same thing. Only now, the imagined threat isn’t just outside our borders, but in America’s left-leaning cities, where he’d have us believe that socialist radicals are plotting the destruction of our nation. The lie didn’t work in the midterms, and it likely won’t work now, but the damage that will be done in the process is immeasurable. Donald Trump would rather see the nation burn than face responsibility for his actions, and those who remain in the Republican Party are apparently OK with that. They’ve had multiple opportunities to step in and stop this slow descent toward fascism, and, at every turn, they’ve decided to look the other way. And now these cowards — these people who used to go on and on about the sanctity of “states rights” — are looking the other way as federal officers, over the protests of democratically elected state and local officials, are essentially going into U.S cities and placing them under martial law. [Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said today, “Under no circumstances will I allow Donald Trump’s troops to come to Chicago and terrorize our residents.”]

His only chance to win reelection, and avoid facing the consequences for his many crimes, is to create chaos, and convince the American people that, no matter how bad things look now, they’ll be worse under Biden. We cannot allow for it to happen. We cannot allow for him to do this. We cannot allow him establish martial law, and then use it as pretext to postpone an election… which, at this point, would not surprise me in the least.

One last thing, just in case you missed it. DHS acting director Chad Wolf, a few days ago, when asked about these federal officers picking up peaceful protestors off the street in Portland, said, “Because we don’t have that local support, that local law enforcement support, we are having to go out and proactively arrest individuals, and we need to do that because we need to hold them accountable.” You read that right… The acting director of Homeland Security — who, by the way, was never confirmed by the Senate — just defended the practice of “proactive arrest” in America.

Protest now, my friends. You may not be able to later.

updated: According to reporting in Bloomberg, what’s happening in Chicago is different from what’s happening in Portland. The forces in Chicago (Operation Legend) are apparently coordinating with state and local law enforcement. As my friend Nathan just noted, “Sounds like Trump is trying to conflate the two things in an effort to normalize what he did in Portland.” Either that, or he’s trying to take credit for the Chicago action, making it look like an extension of what he started in Portland.

updated: The response from Trump to Tom Ridge that we all knew was coming.

updated: The Inspectors General from the DOJ and DHS are opening investigations into what is happening in Portland.

So now we are full on living in a Phillip K Dick novel. Does Chad a have a room full of PreCogs at his disposal? Are they going to put the protestors in some virtual reality before they commit their crimes? Or maybe they are already in that VR?

BTW – on the back of our dimes is a torch bundled inside of a set of sticks. It is known as a fasci. If you look at the older mercury dimes, it is more explicit with the ax bundled with a set of sticks.

iR, letting a pandemic run wild, collapsing the economy and destabilizing the nation seems like a perfect precursor to attempting a police state. I wouldn’t say it is fascism, just yet … but the seeds are clearly being planted.

Trump, and many on the right already routinely label any kind of dissent or protest as “Antifa.”

Trump has already labelled “Antifa” as a terrorist organization.

Following the November election, when the outcome may be unclear and/or contested, there is likely to be widespread protests.

Then, all they’ll need to do is call any kind of push-back (peaceful or violent, organized or unorganized” as “terrorism” – and voila.

Since, by then, they will already have pre-staged a shadow federal force in most major cities, all the ingredients will be there for a new American fascism.

Oh is that my type? Anarchy is fine with me. I would prefer it if only we could mature as an intelligent species and no longer need policing. What you’ve said about a general (voluntary) strategy of the vulnerable populations and infected isolating themselves makes sense. Those considered not vulnerable and testing negative should be able to work. I agree we have to keep the economy going, as much as possible. That is why wearing masks, socially distancing, frequently sanitizing and hand washing with soap, for everyone would help to flatten the curve (slow the spread) and prevent medical personnel and hospitals from being overwhelmed. All of this is very sensible, and I assume you agree with it.

Why hasn’t the president presented this strategy, and called on all Americans to work together, voluntarily, in this common purpose, to slow the spread as much as possible while keeping as much of the economy open and operating as possible?

This is what Mayor Duggan has to say about it. There has been no insurrection.

“There could be no possible justification for such an action. The Detroit Police Department has had the support of the Detroit community in making sure our City did not have a single store looted or a single fire started during the protests. Unlike nearly every other major city in the country, the Detroit Police Department never requested assistance from the National Guard – we handled our issues as a community. We definitely have no need for any federal presence being sent in now.”

All I can say is that this exposes people on the right as being the horrible dishonest hypocrites that they are. They support a president whose behind 150,000 American deaths due to this virus and call themselves “pro-life”. They go on and on about how they need guns to protect themselves from a tyrannical government but look the other way if the tyranny is not directed at them. Of course, they don’t like the idea of “defund the police” because they want the police to keep their knees on the necks of oppressed classes.

I don’t know what to say other than the only real solution is continued peaceful protests and media coverage showing the people being set upon by these law enforcement officers. I also hope that local police will go and do what they can to protect the protesters even if it means arresting the federal officers. I fully support Philidelphia on that!

Let’s be very clear here. Destruction of property is not the same thing as violence towards other humans. There has been some destruction of property on the part of protestors; there has been very very little violence towards any other people and many incidences of protestors protecting each other and police from assault.

The same can not be said of the police.

iRobert is partially right. Violence often works against movements. And is always illegal and punishable as it should be. It is also sometimes effective in making very clear that the people do have power and they are not taking this bullshit anymore. In fact, there is no movement from suffragettes to civil rights that did not succeed without at least some portion of the movement (not most by any means) making clear that the risk of not conceding to demands of non violent protestors was violent protest.

Non-violence alone has not improved Conditions for anyone. It’s a powerful tool and a valid personal moral choice. But it does not work on its own.

It seems Anonymous is right. The police claimed that the driver who shot Garett Foster is the one who shot first. He said Garett Foster was pointing a rifle at him. The second round of shots were not from Foster’s gun either. A third party shot at the shooter’s car as the car drove away. There are some fuzzy images that seem to support the idea that Garrett did have his gun pointed toward the driver. I can’t tell if he was intentionally pointing the gun at the driver. To me it looks like it may have been reasonable for the driver to interpret the angle of the gun as being intentionally pointed at him.

Takeaway for mostly peaceful protestors: Do not bring guns, do not block traffic, do not surround a person’s car, do not touch a person’s car, do not approach a person’s car with a fucking rifle pointed in the direction of the driver.

I think it’s marxists exploiting one of America’s most vulnerable points: it’s history of slavery and unequal treatment. Marxism is only a ready-made template being used by the deep state though. They want depopulation, not power to the people. Power to their kind of people maybe. That’s why dem leaders are co-operating with this incredible effort to destabilize the USA.

I’m just trying to find the parameters of what sort of actions are and are not acceptable, and what sort of actions are just asking for it, even if legal, and whether there are standards for judgment before all witnesses are interviewed and facts collected. I have read somewhere that the reason Garrett Foster pointed his gun was in response to his perceived threat that the driver was going to physically harm his quadriplegic girlfriend who was in a wheelchair that he was pushing.

Intentionally blocking traffic is wrong. Intentionally hitting people with your car is also very wrong. Surrounding a stopped car is wrong and touching the vehicle is wrong. Approaching a car with a weapon (even inadvertently) pointed at the driver is wrong. Shooting someone who is not intending to point a weapon at you is wrong. So if you perceive a threat that you think someone could do to someone it is defensible to point an AK at them and effectively erases their right to defend their self. Even if it is your arbitrary rules you are imposing on other Americans (can’t drive here) that directly creates the possibility of the threat.

If you are in fear of your life, sure.

I would avoid the situation entirely if I felt unsafe, or turn around or otherwise alter my route. I would not be cool with a brick being thrown at me. I would not continue forward. I may even run away. What about you? Would you stand your ground?

Self burn; these incidents are racking up at a crazy rate. Maybe it could possibly be a sign your energy is…off.

“Isn’t that the whole point of stand your ground laws? Is it your position that in the end, the person who was righteous is the one that is still alive? “

First of all you are mixing statements between different people.

No. I am not putting forth a “might is right” philosophy, Vague Guy/ Dim Whit.

If the man who shot Garrett truly did perceive the AK was being intentionally pointed at him, in a threatening way, then it is a PIECE of evidence that Garrett was not experienced enough to carry in a way that is non threatening toward the people around him. The interview with Garrett that night is another PIECE of evidence that he lacked experience for carrying. He admitted he was a new carrier. He was not psychologically prepared for carrying in that situation. Is it really your belief that he was carrying and pushing a wheel chair at the same time? Huh? How would that be safe? It wouldn’t be safe dummy.

I think your arguments are childish, Vague Guy. Sorry.

Open-carrying might make a mob think twice about attacking with weapons. I don’t foresee the level of violence happening here unless something drastic happens to destroy the food supply chain. Always thinking of the possibilities.

What if in running away they tag you as a nazi and chase you? Stomp on your head? Hurt you really bad? Still cool with it?

    Anonymous,

Although sometimes walking away is the right and wise thing to do. Not everyone has a flight response when there is a transgression against them—and I don’t think that is a bad thing. Your flight response is initself is not something to be proud of. Similarly, impotence is not a virtue.

I suppose that a sling on a gun might enable one to both “carry” it and do something else with ones hands simultaneously. I don’t know if it’s safe or not as I have not received that type of training specifically. My long gun experience has been strictly with shotguns and hunting for game fowl, so I never had to deal with multitasking while armed. Have you?

I consider the relative risks and benefits to any actions as it relates to long term objectives. In a scenario where I am alone and encounter a large group of unruly people where I perceive that I am in potential physical danger, I see little upside in sticking around, as I have a long term goal of providing income and support to other people who depend on me. I’m sorry that I am not as “virile” as you. Also, there should be no shame for impotence, as it is a medical condition, just like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. It’s part of the human condition.

You are saying there is a good chance I will run into aggressive protestors so I guess there is just as good a chance you will too. If they decide you are a nazi for some reason like what has happened to other random people already you could be through. If you run from projectiles they could actually mistake you for one.

Ypsi has been pretty chill from what I have seen. Antifa has little to no presence. Haven’t seen much of anything popping in A2 but haven’t been looking too hard either.

I think it will be pretty obvious that I’m not a Nazi by how I look. But thanks for the warning.

Should be obvious a lot of people aren’t nazis but that hasn’t stopped antifa from calling them that and attacking them.

When did I say there should be shame in impotence? It was not my intent to insult people with erectile dysfunction….Jesus! I am saying there is no virtue where the potentiality for a particular transgression is not existent in the first place. Given that your natural response is for flight you are not virtuous if you always avoid a fight. Where would we be as a society if everyone always refrained from fighting back against the transgressions of others?

No. I do not have experience carrying rifles in public. I am basing my judgment on observations and common sense. It would be highly odd to see someone walking around in a crowd with a rifle without at least one hand on the rifle at all times. In a crowd two hands on the rifle at all times would be normaI I think. I am pretty sure that even if you are walking in the woods alone with a strapped hunting rifle you are supposed to have one hand on the strap at all times. If he was walking with his AK slung aver his shoulder while his hands were occupied with something else then he is a total idiot.

YOU interpreted us as cheering Garrett’s death?

Let me be clear: I don’t think it was good he was shot, it was unfortunate, but not completely surprising. I think it is highly irresponsible for an inexperienced carrier to carry in that situation because it is dangerous. There is evidence he was inexperienced and if you look at the still shots there is evidence that he approached the car in an irresponsible way—which could be interpreted as threatening. Not good. Not smart.

What about you HW? Are you cheering that Garrett was shot? Is there another person you are receiving that impression from Anonymous?
