#Obamagate, the release of Michael Flynn, and the desperate attempt to shift attention away from Donald Trump’s role in the spread of COVID-19

With over 75,000 Americans dead, the worst unemployment numbers since the Great Depression, Tara Reade’s accusations coming under increasing scrutiny, and polling showing the President’s support faltering in key swing states, Donald Trump needed something big… something that would allow him to shift focus away from himself, his impeachment, and the fact that he’d assured us that his administration had COVID-19 “totally under control.” And Attorney General William Barr came through for him in a big way, directing federal prosecutors to abandon their prosecution of Trump administration national security adviser Michal Flynn, a man who had pleaded guilty three years ago to lying to the FBI during the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. This move on the part of Barr was, of course, absolute bullshit, and over 2,000 former DOJ and FBI officials are now calling on him to resign, but, assuming his objective was to shift the conversation, he’s been somewhat successful. Before we get to that, though, I’d just like to remind everyone of the litany of things that Flynn had confessed to as a part of his plea deal.

OK, so we all know what happened. We know that, in normal cases, when people lie to the FBI during federal investigations, they don’t just get let go. We know that, in this case, Flynn was released because he was a friend of the President’s, someone who demonstrated his loyalty during the Russia investigation by lying to federal investigators at every turn. And we know — at least those of us still capable of independent thought know — that this isn’t something that happens in democracies. As the over 2,000 signatories of the above mentioned letter to William Barr said a few days ago, “Governments that use the enormous power of law enforcement to punish their enemies and reward their allies are not constitutional republics; they are autocracies.” But that’s not the story being told on the far right today. They aren’t worried about an all-powerful executive branch exerting control over the Justice Department. No, they’re talking about this as the first step in some kind of Qanon wet dream that ultimately leads to former president Barack Obama being thrown into prison for treason.

Here’s GOP Chair Rona Romney McDaniel’s contribution to the #Obamagate Twitter train, building on Donald Trump’s ominous promise that what we’re about to see will make “Watergate look small time.”

I could go deeper on this. There are all kinds of insane conspiracy theories swirling around the internet today. Photoshopped images of Barack Obama being arrested. Stories about how he’d devised the COVID-19 pandemic just to save himself, by bringing down the anti-corruption Trump presidency. But I have better things to do that to help promote that kind of unhinged nonsense. Instead, I’d like to share this video of Donald Trump, during this afternoon’s White House briefing, being asked specifically what law he’s suggesting that Barack Obama broke, and being completely unable to respond.

These are terrifying times, my friends. And I’m afraid it’s going to get worse. These people are desperate, and they will stop at nothing to stay in power, and avoid being held to account for their actions. If you’re not ready for the fight that’s ahead of us, you’d better get ready. It’s going to be uglier than anything you can imagine. We have seen nothing these past three years to demonstrate that Donald Trump will put the republic before himself, and every safeguard we have in place against authoritarian rule is about to be tested.

One last thing…

The unveiling of the Mueller Report and the Horowitz were huge additional confirmation—you guys just did not know how to read them because you are not thinking—you are relying on propaganda media to think for you.

Washington Post 202: “Barr and Trump hint at coming moves after Flynn is let off”

Attorney General Bill Barr gave a television interview to defend his decision on Thursday to throw out the guilty plea of Michael Flynn for lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russians. “People sometimes plead to things that turn out not to be crimes,” said Barr, who argued that agents did not have a legitimate reason to question President Trump’s then-national security adviser.

CBS News’s Catherine Herridge asked how he thinks history will remember such a stunning reversal, which has irked many career prosecutors inside the Justice Department.

“Well, history is written by the winner,” Barr replied. “So it largely depends on who’s writing the history.”

The rest of the answer suggested that Barr intends to write it.

“I mean, it’s not going to be the end of it,” the Trump appointee added, referring to letting Flynn off the hook. “We’re going to get to the bottom of what happened.”

Barr was referring to the ongoing probe by John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, whom he appointed to reinvestigate the investigators in the Russia probe. “There probably will be a report as a byproduct of his work, but we also are seeing if there are people who violated the law and should be brought to justice, and that’s what we have our eye on,” he said. “I don’t want to get into particular individuals.”

Trump celebrated the Flynn news in the Oval Office on Thursday afternoon.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a lot of things happen over the next number of weeks,” he said. “This is just one piece of a very dishonest puzzle.”

Trump then accused “the Obama administration Justice Department” of committing “treason.” He also referred to the FBI investigators and Justice Department officials who worked on the probe of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election as “human scum,” as well as “dishonest, crooked people.”

“He was targeted in order to try and take down a president,” Trump said of Flynn. “I hope a big price is going to be paid. A big price should be paid. … It’s treason.”

Trump accusing law enforcement officials of “treason” as he seeks to settle old scores is another indication that his attention has shifted away from the novel coronavirus contagion, which is causing the greatest public health and economic crises in nearly a century.

Trump said he discussed the investigation earlier Thursday during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and raised the possibility that they could work together more closely now. “And that was a very nice call,” Trump said. “And remember this: The Russia hoax made it very hard for Russia and the United States to deal with each other. They’re a very important nation. We’re the most powerful nation; they’re a very powerful nation. Why would we not be dealing with each other? But the Russia hoax … made it very difficult for our nation and their nation to deal. And we discussed that. I said, ‘You know, it’s a very appropriate time.’ Because things are falling out now and coming in line … We are talking about arms control with Russia, and we will go forward with that. And we are talking about it very seriously.”

Breaking news from the Washington Post.

Here’s how it begins. Follow the link above for more.

A U.S. judge put on hold the Justice Department’s move to drop charges against Michael Flynn, saying he expects independent groups and legal experts to argue against the bid to exonerate President Trump’s former national security adviser of lying to the FBI.

U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan said in an order Tuesday that he expects individuals and organizations will seek to intervene in the politically charged case. Having others weigh in could preface more aggressive steps that the federal judge in Washington could take, including — as many outside observers have called for — holding a hearing to consider what to do.

Sullivan’s order came after the government took the highly irregular step Thursday of reversing its stance on upholding Flynn’s guilty plea.

The action by Sullivan, a veteran 72-year-old jurist with a national reputation for advocating defendants’ rights to full government disclosure of evidence, appears to rule out immediate action on the Justice Department’s decision to reverse course and throw out Flynn’s December 2017 guilty plea…

There is written evidence from the FBI agents who interviewed Flynn that they didn’t think he lied or committed a crime. And there is written evidence that the reason they wanted to interview him was to entrap him. In light of the recently revealed documents, the prosecutors asked the judge to withdraw the charges. So now, the Judge has requested comments from politically motivated outside groups to weigh in on why the innocent man should be charged regardless? Imagine how you might feel to be a defendant under these circumstances. How is this justice?

When you’re interviewed by the FBI, you tell the truth. If you don’t, and you’re discovered, you go to jail. It’s called perjury. It’s not a trap. No one made Michigan Flynn say that he hadn’t talked with the Russians. No one forced him not to say that he was on Turkey’s payroll.

Trump cult nonsense. It was the Russian ambassador who was being spied on, not Flynn. That’s why the identity of the person the ambassador was talking to during the problematic sanctions conversation had to be unmasked. Nobody who asked for that identity to be “unmasked” knew it was Flynn until then.

“Nobody who asked for that identity to be “unmasked” knew it was Flynn until then.”

Highly doubtful. Why did unmasking explode duing the Obama years?

“Unmasking” has occurred under the Trump Administration at twice the rate it did under the Obama Administration.

Trump is hemorrhaging older voters, polls show

He is throwing older Americans under the bus with the bad way he is handling this virus. I am hardly surprised that some of them have figured that out and are no longer going to vote for him even if he does appeal to their racism and sexism. What does that say about his current supporters? That they would rather people die than see a change to a power structure where white men are dominant?

FF, EOS, HW and I are waiting impatiently for Hillary’s arrest and Obama’s deportation to Kenya. I don’t know what’s taking so long.

I think I’m going to start making robocalls to registered Republicans asking them if we can put “Lock Her Up” and “Deport Obama to Kenya” lawn signs.

HW, can you keep up up to date on the details of Obamagate as they come out?

This would be a good thread where you can post those updates.

You are too far behind to get up to date. It takes me enough time to get myself there without having to be responsible for trying to teach a bunch of pigs.

Nobody wants to read a bunch of nonsense opinion from you. But you could just post breaking developments here as they happen. That way the chronology of events isn’t scattered throughout a bunch of unrelated threads. It would be good to be able to look through the chronology as it develops from here on out. You don’t need to recap anything. Nobody cares.

What people might be interested in reading is breaking news on the topic. You’re the one that could keep up informed on those details, HW.

Scoop: Barr tells Republicans Durham report won’t be ready by election

    Source: Axios

Attorney General Bill Barr has begun telling top Republicans that the Justice Department’s sweeping review into the origins of the Russia investigation will not be released before the election, a senior White House official and a congressional aide briefed on the conversations tell Axios.

Why it matters: Republicans had long hoped the report, led by U.S. Attorney John Durham, would be a bombshell containing revelations about what they allege were serious abuses by the Obama administration and intelligence community probing for connections between President Trump and Russia.

“This is the nightmare scenario. Essentially, the year and a half of arguably the number one issue for the Republican base is virtually meaningless if this doesn’t happen before the election,” a GOP congressional aide told Axios.

Barr has made clear that they should not expect any further indictments or a comprehensive report before Nov. 3, our sources say.

Could someone go over to John Barr, Jr.’s place to check on him?

I’m assuming John Barr, Jr. is hosting a party at his place celebrating the Hunter Biden laptops.

EOS and FF are invited, but haven’t RSVP’d yet.

    Joe Biden? “Lock him up!”

    Gretchen Whitmer? “Lock her up!”
