Is Michigan’s Justin Amash going to help Donald Trump win reelection?

Michigan Congressman Justin Amash, the former Republican who made news last year by voting with Democrats to impeach Donald Trump, announced today that he is seriously considering a third-party run for president, as the candidate of the Libertarian Party. While he certainly has a right to do so, I, like others, can’t help but think that, if he goes down this path, he may very well help Donald Trump — a man whom he clearly feels is corrupt, authoritarian and unfit for office — win a second term by appealing to principled, conservative independents who would otherwise gravitate toward Biden. To quote Amash’s friend, former Republican congressman Joe Walsh, “If Amash gets the Libertarian nomination and stays in until the end, he could wind up going in the books as the guy who voted to impeach Trump one year, then tipped the election to him 11 months later.” Walsh, who himself attempted to take on Donald Trump in this year’s Republican primary, has also said that he finds Amash’s decision to run both “damn perplexing” and “disappointing.”

And it really is perplexing, given what Amash has said in the past about Donald Trump, the damage he’s done to the Republican Party, etc. One would think that — as Ben Rhodes noted earlier today — if Amash really felt strongly that Trump posed an authoritarian threat to our nation, his first consideration would be to see him removed from office. And, I can’t see any scenario where an Amash candidacy helps accomplish that. [A principled conservative isn’t going to win over any of the Trump base. Walsh tried that, and failed miserably.]

Walsh, for what it’s worth, was asked about this today in an interview conducted by the New York Times. Here’s the question, followed by his response.

You’ve been very critical of President Trump since before he was elected. How concerned are you that running on the Libertarian ticket will help him win re-election?

It’s impossible for anyone to know how things will shake out when you add a candidate or remove a candidate. The math is way too complicated. People claim to know. They don’t know.

A lot of the hype in that direction is based on a few people who are well known — former Republicans who are supporting Joe Biden — and they falsely assume that everyone must be like them, that every person who was a Republican or is a Republican and doesn’t like Trump, is looking strongly at Biden. And I don’t think that’s the case. I think actually a lot of people who like Biden but are Republicans will still vote for Trump because he’s closer to their policies. That’s just the way politics works.

For a lot of those people, their first choice might be me and their second choice is Trump. It’s hard to know. I don’t try to overanalyze that because no person could possibly know. It’s arrogant to think you could know how things will shake out. There are a lot of people who won’t vote for either one regardless, and the entrance of a major candidate provides them an opportunity to vote when they otherwise would not have voted. Nobody really knows. My goal is to win this race and provide an opportunity for people to vote for somebody they believe in.

I don’t have a lot of time at the moment, but I will say that, if Amash thinks that there’s any hope of winning over even 1% of the Trump base with appeals to conservative principles, he’s incredibly naive. The Party has long since moved on. And no one gives a shit about the intellectual underpinnings of fiscal conservatism anymore. Now it’s all about stoking the fires of grievance, and, if you don’t have red meat to the throw to the base, you’re as good as dead. There is no resurrecting the pre-Nixon Party. All that’s left is a hollow shell. And it’s now inhabited by showman who has some 40% of the population under his spell. Any vote Amash gets, you can be sure, will be from someone who was so disgusted by Donald Trump that they were going to cross party lines cast their ballot for Biden.

I should add that there are things that I like about Amash. While I disagree about a number of his policy positions, and hate that he came to office as part of the Tea Party nonsense of 2010, I respect him for doing what other conservatives in Congress were unwilling to do, and refusing to sacrifice his principles in order to appease Donald Trump. That doesn’t mean, however, that I’m going to give him a pass on his vote against the recent anti-lynching bill, or his ties to anti-vaxxers. But I can still respect him for standing up to Trump, and accusing his former colleagues of being hypocrites. It would have been easy enough for Amash to do what several of his former Freedom Caucus colleagues did, and become full-fledged Trumpists. He didn’t do that, however, and I respect him for it. That respect, however, only goes so far. And we’re fast approaching that line.

Sorry for rambling, but I just really don’t want for Michigan to be the thing that puts the worst president in American history over the top yet one more time.

I was thinking along these lines but I really wonder if Amash would be picking up many votes that would have otherwise gone to Biden. It seems that he would be more likely to capture some of the otherwise-will-stay-at-home vote. That could mean bringing out more voters who would likely vote GOP downticket but somehow I don’t think that would bother Amash.

He has a bit of the Susan Collins disease I think. He likes the media attention that comes with pretending to be a thoughtful, principled person. I watched him interviewed last night and he’s just a smug prick. His voting record speaks for itself. A journalist friend of mine in NY who writes for Politico and other reputable news organizations has taken an interest in Amash and was talking to me about it. He’s a much smarter political mind than I and just doesn’t see how the numbers add up to anything but helping Biden. I don’t know. The real story is the great myth of the undecided voter. I don’t believe there is any significant number of undecided voters out there. You have to be truly stupid and feeble not to be decided now, or three years ago.

Is this the Official Tara Reade thread?

I for one, will find it very interesting when and why you guys finally decide to talk about it. Your masters are not allowing you to speak about it yet?

  7. Posted April 30, 2020 at 11:22 am | Permalink

What is there to talk about, FF? It should be investigated of course. Just like the 25 allegations against Trump should have been investigated.

  9. Jean Henry
    Posted April 30, 2020 at 11:34 am | Permalink

I’m happy to comment on Tara Reade. I think she’s almost certainly telling the truth. I also think Clinton was a rapist. And a good president. So our choice now is between a serial rapist and a handsy dude who probably committed 1st degree sexual assault. It won’t be the first time, I’m sure.

1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted according to the CDC. Men’s groups who support male sexual assault victims believe that 1 in 6 men are sexually assaulted. Usually by men. These numbers are harder to attain because men don’t talk about their sexual assaults– as victims, by standers or predators. Many men have experienced all three scenarios. When we start to talk about it, then we will be doing something about systemic cultural sexual violence.

Not electing Joe Biden does precisely nothing to that end.

We live in a rape culture. Sexual assault is painfully common. The choices I have for this election are between two predatory, blowhard assholes. Only one is dangerous to the nation as a whole though, and that’s Trump. So I’m going to suck it up and vote Biden. Because I’m not a single issue voter. Because I don’t have any other good options.

And yes it fucking breaks my heart, but my feelings are not why I vote the way I vote. They have nothing at all to do with it.

    Oops second degree sexual assault.
But hey, I admire Thomas Jefferson and he was obviously a serial rapist of Sally Hemmings. I understand people who want to dismiss him. I’m just not willing to apply contemporary sexual morays to history. I’m willing to say the old morays were sexist and racist. And many still are. I’m interested in changing those morays and standards. I’m interested in moving forward.

Scapegoats divert energy away from creating change. That’s their function. I’m not clear on why American media can’t seem to present these gotcha moments in that light.

I would distinguish Biden’s accused behavior from Kavanaugh’s in many ways, I’m not willing to detail now because talking about this stuff is painful. I would simply remind everyone that Kavanaugh is my age and received a lifetime appointment. Biden must be elected. If I had a chance to vote for SCOTUS nominees, then I would not have voted for Kavanaugh before the Ford accusations appeared.

Anonymous– The MEtoo demand to believe women is not a demand to convict without proof. It is simply asking that prosecutors, police etc believe women first, just as they do for any other criminal complaint. If you were robbed and called the police and they acted as though you were fraudulently making a fake claim from the get go, that would approximate how rape accusations are treated by the police in many cases.

That article is a lawyer being a lawyer. He knows damn well these issues are difficult to prove in court and easier to prove one way or another in the court of public opinion. Evidence Casts Doubt on Tara Reade’s Sexual Assault Allegations of Joe Biden

  31. iRobert

Fox News isn’t excited about the Tara Reade accusations. They know it’s a setup to get Biden free TV time and to remind everyone of that issue with the admitted pussy-grabber-in-chief.

  32. Frosted Flakes
    Posted May 1, 2020 at 10:38 am | Permalink

My guess is people at Fox do not want to do anything that might jeopardizes Biden’s chances of being the candidate. I am making no truth claims about Biden’s guilt or innocence. Due process….

I found it interesting that nobody on MM wanted to mention it for about 35 days. I don’t think either side wanted to mention for different reasons :)

  33. Frosted Flakes
    Posted May 1, 2020 at 10:42 am | Permalink

The politics are such that Biden has sort of a rape pass—if he wanted to use it. If the Dems think it is to their advantage to destroy Biden they will do it. At which point the conservatives will defend Biden because you can’t get much of a worse candidate to go against Trump. Crazy world…

  34. iRobert
    Posted May 1, 2020 at 11:07 am | Permalink

I h e no problem talking about it. It’s becomming obvious that Reade has psychological problems and has been accusing a lot of people of sexual misconduct. Her stories change constantly.

If there were any truth to her accusation, we’d be seeing other accusers coming out out of the woodwork like they did with Trump.

  35. iRobert

Fox News isn’t that savvy. I’m surprised they realized this early that the Reade story is a ploy.

It’s pretty funny this phony story involves “pussy-grabbing.” It’s a little to obvious that they want to give Biden the opportunity to contrast himself against Trump on the topic.

  37. iRobert

I have no problem talking about it, is what I meant to type. I also meant to say its a little too obvious that they want to give Biden the opportunity to contrast himself against Trump on the topic.

This thing looks like a ploy by the media to assist Biden.

  38. iRobert
    Posted May 1, 2020 at 11:39 am | Permalink

I believed her story initially, because the media is making an effort to avoid reporting details about Reade’s other accusations toward other people. They’ll report that stuff once Biden has had a chance to get on all the network news programs and show his compassion for his accuser. Easy win over Trump.

You seem to be a low reading comprehension type of person Anonymous.

A big part of me never wanted to talk about it anyway because anything that reduced the chances of Biden being the candidate would be bad for me. Yet you are trying to suggest that I wanted to throw shade on Biden. Not at all. You have everything backwards—per usual.

Is there a thread here devoted to sexual assault accusations against politicians. Maybe that was the place to get everyone refocused away from all this other silly, unimportant stuff, and on to the particular stories you feel should be everyone’s focus.

And they both seemed to be suggesting I do not want to talk about it now because of a change in the circumstances. **I don’t even know what the changed circumstances are to be honest because I am not researching it at all**. I am not invested in it one way or the other really. I do hope justice is served generally of course…. If anything I did not want to talk about it for selfish reasons because I want Biden to run against Trump.

I suppose it is true I am interested in following the coverage of the story in terms of timing and perspective. I like to track narratives.
