The coordinated plot to shutter the Department of Justice and kill the Mueller investigation

Trump, it’s no secret, hates the Department of Justice (DOJ), which, as we discussed yesterday, he’s recently begun to refer to as “the deep state justice department.” Simply put, he seems to feel as though DOJ officials should be doing his bidding, and, based on a number of accounts, he’s furious that they aren’t. To hear White House insiders tell it, Trump is still irate that Attorney General Jeff Sessions, when it became known that he’d lied under oath about several meetings he’d taken with representatives of the Russian government as an emissary of the Trump campaign, recused himself from all matters related to the investigation, instead of just shutting the whole thing down. And, of course, Trump is also not happy with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who just recently went back in front of the House Judiciary Committee to reiterate his support of the Mueller investigation. [Trump has referred to Rosenstein as being both “weak” and a threat.] So, with the net beginning to tighten around the President and members of his inner circle, many of us thought that Trump might fire either Sessions or Rosenstein over the holiday break, making room for a new Department of Justice appointee who would actually fire Mueller when instructed to do so.

If Trump were to do this, by the way, it would not be without precedent. In 1973, in what has come to be known as the Saturday Night Massacre, Richard Nixon forced both his Attorney General (Elliot Richardson) and his Deputy Attorney General (William Ruckelshaus) from the DOJ. Both men, we would learn later, had quit when asked by Nixon to fire Watergate independent special prosecutor Archibald Cox, who was, at that time, attempting to subpoena audio tapes from Nixon’s secret Oval Office recording system. Nixon ultimately promoted Robert Bork, who, according to some, agreed to do what Richardson and Ruckelshaus would not, and fire Cox, in exchange for the promise of a seat on the Supreme Court. The firing of Cox, however, did not stop the investigation. And Nixon would eventually be impeached for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. And this is likely why Trump, as much as he might be tempted to, hasn’t attempted it.[While Trump has said, “I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department,” so far, at least publicly, he’s maintained that he’s willing to see the process through without intervening.] But that doesn’t mean that Trump and his supporters have given up on the idea of shutting down the investigation through other, less obvious means.

Earlier today, on Fox News, former Republican Speaker of the House New Gingrich, who has emerged as one of Trump’s most trusted attack dogs, called for Congress to defund the Department of Justice. “The Congress has the power to simply not fund an institution that is not being obedient,” Gingrich said. [The job of the DOJ, by the way, for those of you who have never taken an Introduction to Government class, is not to be “obedient,” but to enforce and protect the rule of law. But Newt, who couldn’t cut it as a history teacher at a rural Georgia college, wouldn’t know that.] Gingrich then went on to add that Congress, in his opinion, could no longer “tolerate being kept in the dark and being told lies.”

As for how Republicans intend to justify cutting funding to the ‘disobedient’ DOJ, look no further than House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, who, as you may recall, like Sessions, recused himself from the Russia investigation at the outset amid allegations of wrongdoing. [Nunes, who served on the Trump transition team, is thought to have smuggled secret documents to the White House early in the investigation, giving the administration a heads-up as to the evidence against them.] Nunes, however, didn’t stay away from the investigation long, issuing a number of subpoenas to the DOJ back in August, in hopes of uncovering evidence that the department, along with the FBI, was conspiring against Trump. Well those subpoenas had to be responded to by today, and, as I understand it, they haven’t been. And it looks as though that might be the trigger the Republicans were looking for to make a move against the DOJ.

Sounding very much like Gingrich, Nunes, in a letter, said that this “broader pattern of behavior” on the part of the DOJ “can no longer be tolerated”. Interestingly, on the same day this was happening, Paul Manafort, the President’s former campaign director, who was recently indicted for a number of crimes, including “Conspiracy against the United States,” filed charges against the DOJ, charging that they had violated the law in appointing Mueller.

So, with all of this as background, just a few hours ago Rosenstein, accompanied by FBI Director Chris Wray, stopped by the office of House Speaker Paul Ryan, something which they had not done up to this point in the investigation, leading many to speculate that they’d either been giving the Speaker a heads-up concerning imminent indictments, or seeking his support against this gathering storm of distraction. [Either way, this meeting portends a huge showdown on the horizon.]

Interestingly, these new charges against the ‘disobedient’ DOJ may be why, in the days leading up to this, we’ve started to hear more of a coordinated response to the Republican claim that ‘it was the fake Steele dossier, funded by the Clinton campaign, that, when handed over to the FBI, led to the initiation of the Russia investigation.’ First, we heard earlier this week that the investigation had actually begun with a tip from the Australians about something Trump campaign insider George Papadopoulos had said over drinks at a London bar, and, then, yesterday, the owners of Fusion GPS, the research firm responsible for having compiled the dossier, wrote an editorial for the New York Times in which they shot numerous holes in the Republican narrative. Here, in case you’re interested, is how their letter begins.

A generation ago, Republicans sought to protect President Richard Nixon by urging the Senate Watergate committee to look at supposed wrongdoing by Democrats in previous elections. The committee chairman, Sam Ervin, a Democrat, said that would be “as foolish as the man who went bear hunting and stopped to chase rabbits.”

Today, amid a growing criminal inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congressional Republicans are again chasing rabbits. We know because we’re their favorite quarry.

In the year since the publication of the so-called Steele dossier — the collection of intelligence reports we commissioned about Donald Trump’s ties to Russia — the president has repeatedly attacked us on Twitter. His allies in Congress have dug through our bank records and sought to tarnish our firm to punish us for highlighting his links to Russia. Conservative news outlets and even our former employer, The Wall Street Journal, have spun a succession of mendacious conspiracy theories about our motives and backers.

We are happy to correct the record. In fact, we already have.

Three congressional committees have heard over 21 hours of testimony from our firm, Fusion GPS. In those sessions, we toppled the far right’s conspiracy theories and explained how The Washington Free Beacon and the Clinton campaign — the Republican and Democratic funders of our Trump research — separately came to hire us in the first place…

I love that they started with the quote from Sam Ervin, as, once again, it brings us back to the fact that none of this is new. We’ve been here before. We had a criminal presidency, who, with the help of a complicit Republican Party, attempted to obfuscate the facts by demanding that the investigators be investigated. It didn’t work then, and one hopes it won’t work now. The issue isn’t, as Nunes and others are asking, who funded the Steele dossier, or even how the DOJ handled it once it came into their possession. Those, to quote Ervin, are the rabbit questions. We need to stay focused on the bear. We need to know whether or not the President of the United States and members of his inner circle conspired with a known enemy of our country in order to subvert our democratic processes. And, by they way, all the evidence up to this point seems to indicate that they did.

I’m sorry I went off on this tangent, when I know that 99% of you would rather have talked about the revelations that hit the news today from Michael Wolff’s upcoming book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.” I’ll try to work some of it into a later post. I promise. [i.e. Trump calling Sally Yates a “cunt”, Bannon accusing Trump Jr. and Kushner of treason, Trump’s tricks for fucking the wives of his friends.]

update: Since I posted this Thursday night, things have gotten even stranger. Senators Lindsey Graham and Chuck Grassley have called for an investigation into Christoper Steele, the former MI6 agent responsible for writing the infamous dossier for Fusion GPS. And, in the House, members of the so-called Freedom Caucus, have called for Session to step down. Meanwhile, it would appear that, in that mysterious meeting between Paul Ryan and Rod Rosenstein, the Speaker sided with Devin Nunes, and against the DOJ. And, perhaps in hopes of saving himself from the attacks being waged against him from members of his own party, it looks as though Sessions has agreed to reopen the investigation into whether the Clinton Foundation engaged in any pay-to-play politics while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State. So, yeah, things are continuing to get more heated, as members of an increasingly desperate Republican party attempt to do anything in their power to paint the picture that Clinton is the real criminal here, while forcing Sessions from office, so that his replacement can fire Rosenstein and Mueller. In other words, the Republicans have decided to go all-in on Trump, in hopes that he might help them to further dismantle the New Deal, which has been their dream since the Roosevelt administration.

Nunes said late last night that he’s getting what he asked for from the DOJ.

“After speaking to Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein this evening, I believe the House Intelligence Committee has reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that will provide the committee with access to all the documents and witnesses we have requested,” the statement read.

“The committee looks forward to receiving access to the documents over the coming days,” the statement concluded.

Rod Rosenstein’s visit was specifically regarding Republican Congressman Devin Nunes. This is not good news for Nunes. My guess is he’s gonna have to leave Congress. I think he should be thrown in prison for the rest of his life. He’s a traitor & one of Trump’s dumbest lapdogs.

It’s probably better that Trump & co are focused on the book. Maybe it will prevent him from more diplomatic disaster tweets. That I am counting on Generals in cabinet to keep our president from destroying us and others is truly sobering, but that is my thin thread of hope.

For some reason I found it amusing that along with the demand to stop all publication of the Wolf book, Trump’s lawyer also asked for a copy.

How did they not see this coming?
Do any of us find the revelations surprising?
At least Bannon is now over. Trump has disowned him. We’ll see how Breitbart proceeds in the future. Bannon, in the Wolf book referred to Breitbart as ‘not a really legitimate news source.” I cant imagine they are too pleased. He may have no where to go.

Oh but Russia, yes. I’m following but I have learned now to take the news as it comes. It’s going to take years. I’m finding the leftist press and twitter as paranoid and rabbit hole-ridden as the right (almost). I trust Mueller and place a lot of faith in him. I’m glad to have someone in there who I can trust.

I think we should be talking about the State Department and foreign affairs, not the Russia investigation (though I’m happy for the update). But Americans have little interest in foreign affairs except to deny the value of our influence abroad, in favor of condemning it entirely (too easy). There will be very hard lessons there.

Business Insider: “2 GOP lawmakers are calling on Sessions to resign — and it looks like a ploy to kill the Russia probe”

Republican Reps. Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan on Thursday called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign in an op-ed published by the conservative Washington Examiner, citing leaks coming out of the FBI they said Sessions appeared unable to “control.”

“Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the Russia investigation, but it would appear he has no control at all of the premier law enforcement agency in the world,” the lawmakers wrote.

“It is time for Sessions to start managing in a spirit of transparency to bring all of this improper behavior to light and stop further violations,” they said. “If Sessions can’t address this issue immediately, then we have one final question needing an answer: When is it time for a new attorney general? Sadly, it seems the answer is now.”

Meadows and Jordan, who have been fiercely critical of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, seemed particularly irked by a New York Times report published last weekend that seemed to undermine the popular GOP talking point. The Times story suggested that the so-called Steele dossier, the document that contains unverified allegations of collusion, did not trigger the FBI’s Russia probe.

The Times report said instead that Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos’ drunken comments to an Australian diplomat about Russian “dirt” on Hillary Clinton, combined with Russia’s hack on the Democratic National Committee, sparked the FBI’s probe.

Meadows and Jordan — who acknowledged recently that he’s been in touch with the White House about the Mueller probe — raised questions about the Times report, calling it a “far-fetched and ill-supported” story that contributed to the “manufactured hysteria” surrounding the investigation that had masked the “substantial accomplishments of President Trump’s administration.”

But they seemed equally if not more concerned by what they characterized as the “alarming number of FBI agents and DOJ officials sharing information with reporters” in “clear violation of the investigative standards that Americans expect and should demand.”

Sessions, they wrote, should resign now that he has proven he can’t control the FBI.

The congressmen, who have asserted that there is “no evidence” of collusion and have questioned why Mueller’s probe is taking so long, may have another motive. If Sessions resigned, a new attorney general who is not recused from the Russia investigation as Sessions is would need to be appointed.

Sessions recused himself early last year after it was revealed that he had failed to disclose that he had at least two meetings with Russia’s ambassador to the US during the campaign.

That new attorney general could fire Mueller, since Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has already signaled that he has no plans to do it himself.

Mueller asked the Justice Department in November to hand over thousands of documents related to the firing of James Comey as FBI director, including any communications between the White House and the department around the time that Sessions recused himself.

The request for emails between the White House and the DOJ related to Sessions’ recusal could help Mueller determine why Trump has expressed anger at Sessions relinquishing control over the campaign-related investigations to Rosenstein in March.

Trump has made no secret of his displeasure with Sessions. He told the New York Times last summer that he “would have picked someone else” for the job if he knew Sessions was going to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. He called Sessions “beleaguered” and “weak” in later tweets and asked why the DOJ was not investigating “crooked Hillarys crimes.”

A person close to Trump told The Washington Post around the same time that Trump had asked about how firing Sessions “would play in the conservative media” and whether it would help to replace Sessions “with a major conservative.”

There are some articles out saying that Wolff plays a little loose with the facts. Some of the passages from the book paints a pretty ugly picture, and my first thought was that he had better have recordings of these interactions to defend himself. The part about Trump trying to “bed” his friends’ wives is over the top awful. If that is recorded and put out in public, I don’t know how any decent human being could continue to stand by him.

Axios has an article that says that, yes, he did record at least some of these conversations. I hope for Wolff’s sake and for the sake of Truth hat all of the stuff is recorded or corroborated in some way because some “news” outlets are going to use the slightest inaccuracy to argue that all of it is BS.

I would imagine Wolff’s publishers, knowing how litigious Trump is, would have carefully vetted the text before release. That’s their responsibility. Most of the criticism of Wolff is that he gets too editorial and petty. That’s not libel. Comments he attributes to others need only be accurate to what those people said (documented), not backed up by secondary sources as in traditional journalism. Wolff himself said that so many of the comments from sources were contradictory, that he could only relay them as stated.

    But, Russia.

I listen to Bannon for exactly those reasons, IL. I read most interviews with him. In the NYT interview, he stated that he believes there will be a populist revolution. It’s just not clear yet who will win, the left or the right. And yes, the strategy on the right is to divide the left by stoking racial division. (Nothing new there.) My point was the Bannon split will divide the GOP voters further into factions. I’m also glad he’s gone from considerable influence on policy. I’m sure he will still be a voice out there offering his opinions. That he’s untethered from Trump, the Mercers and possibly Breitbart will only make them more interesting. I very much appreciate that he called his own rag illegitimate, for instance.

WASHINGTON — In early January, news that the Justice Department’s inspector general launched an investigation into the government’s disputed handling of the Hillary Clinton email inquiry was quickly overtaken by the chaotic run-up to President Trump’s inauguration.

Nearly a year later, Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s wide-ranging review of the FBI and Justice’s work in the politically-charged Clinton case now looms as a potential landmine for Russia special counsel Robert Mueller.

    Hillary Clinton is not President.

I am not concerned for Clinton’s welfare, as I do not know her, but it seems a waste of resources to target a former political figure, rather than a sitting President, though it is possible the two could happen simultaneously and not drain resources.

So in the unlikely event that Clinton gets convicted, then what? Does that make the case of possible (likely) collusion between the Trump campaign (who became a sitting President) and Russian agents simply go away?

I don’t get this logic at all and why Clinton’s email server even matters at all in 2018. Honestly, I think that the problem of foreign governments meddling in elections, past, present and future is a bigger problem. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Again, I am not invested in any way in Clinton’s welfare. If, in fact, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that she did commit a crime, then of course she should be prosecuted.

But, as you keep saying, all will be revealed in time.

So why keep harping on about how you know the truth. You are the sole person here who is certain of what the outcome of these investigations will be.

As a means of editing out all the bottomless rabbit holes, I tune out anyone who uses the term ‘deep state’ these days, so it’s entirely possible I am missing some details brewing in the underneath. Given that there has been a concerted effort to undermine HRC for 30+ years now, with nothing to show for it, I think I’ll just wait for an actual indictment.

I don’t feel that much different about the Trump Russia investigation, though I admit I’m more invested in the outcome, since he holds actual power. And also he’s incompetent. And increasingly dangerous.

It feel good to be right or to think one is right, but some of us are more interested in finding out the truth. Even if that contradicts our narrative. Some of us even want to learn truths that contradict our narrative. Craxy, huh?

Frequently, the things people complain about are the very same things which they are guilty of. The Democrats’ plan to take down Trump is going to be the mechanism that ultimately discredits Obama and convicts Hillary and a slew of her gang. Hillary and Bill have operated outside the laws for over 30 years. It is important to hold them accountable for their crimes to maintain justice and discourage future politicians from using their office for personal gain. And the media’s biased reporting of events should lead to their wholesale replacement with reputable news sources that we can trust.

If Trump worked with Russians to steal the election from Clinton, then he ought to be convicted as well. I’m fine with a Pence presidency. But if Hillary put the information on unsecured servers and let her underlings send Yahoo emails, then she is at a minimum an accomplice to the crime.

Since this stream no longer seems to connect to the original post, this seems as appropriate as anything. For those out there who deny that human activity can alter the chemical composition of the atmosphere (ie. the primary cause of global warming), NASA has just released observational evidence that by eliminating (not entirely but substantially) the use of fluorocarbons we have reduced the size of the annual antarctic ozone hole. Very good news.
    https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2018/nasa-study-first-direct-proof-of-ozone-hole-recovery-due-to-chemicals-ban

If we stopped (not entirely but substantially) the emission of co2 (as quickly as the ban on fluorocarbons) our children and grandchildren might have a chance. The longer we wait the worse their odds.

Oh, yeah, cuz CFC’s are so comparable to Co2…

  89. EOS
    Posted January 5, 2018 at 5:27 pm | Permalink

    Wobblie,

Increased CO2 in the atmosphere promotes the growth of vegetation/trees which convert the carbon to plant material and then release increasing amounts of oxygen to the atmosphere. CO2 gas diffuses into ocean waters where it stimulates the growth of phytoplankton and, when they die, their skeletons form calcium carbonate sediments on the ocean floor, which over time and under great amounts of pressure form oil deposits. It’s called the Carbon cycle and is certainly not a threat to the lives of our grandchildren.

Few understand science and are therefore easily swayed by a few so-called “experts” whose motivation has always been a political agenda. Producing too much CO2 can easily be corrected by planting more forests. Why is the only solution considered the one that eliminates the internal combustion engine and detrimentally impacts the manufacturing industries? In the 60’s and 70’s, a group of environmentalists decided to reduce world populations. Their plan to do this was designed long before any manufactured “environmental crisis” existed that would require its implementation. Ask yourself – why does the only proposed solutions to the “global warming/Climate change” crisis reduce our capacity to sustain large populations at a high standard of living? Who wins – who loses?

  90. wobblie
    Posted January 5, 2018 at 5:34 pm | Permalink

Trees are a wonderful thing. They take decades to grow. Climate change and all of its associated deleterious effects (droughts, disease, etc.) along with clear cutting of all the rain forest in the interest of profits has made that solution a bit difficult to realize. In the absence of significant reductions in the emissions of co2, the changes in the atmosphere will create so many feedbacks (ie. for example increased natural emissions of methane, which are already undermining co2 reduction efforts) that there will be no future for our species.
Physics does not lie or engage in “fake news”.

  91. wobblie
    Posted January 5, 2018 at 5:40 pm | Permalink

Producing bio-char is a better solution in that it consumes co2 in its production and increases soil fertility. This is some thing that as community we should get involved with.

  94. Iron Lung
    Posted January 5, 2018 at 8:00 pm | Permalink

The point is not that there is climate change. The point is how fast it is happening. The current rate of global temperature increase within this short of a span of time is unprecedented.

Regardless, what happened during the ice age or even what happened 2,000 years ago is wholly irrelevant to the post industrial 21st century. Human society just was not the same back then.

It is possible that we will adjust, but it is going to be far easier to reduce greenhouse emissions to slow global climate change than to quickly rearrange our entire agricultural sector and move all of the world’s coastal cities inland.

You can choose to believe that greenhouse emissions don’t cause climate change if you like, but the evidence is overwhelming despite how you choose to see the world and whatever websites you choose to look at.

That is such an unscientific attitude. Human society was different then so weather then is irrelevant today? Obviously it is possible to learn things from studying climate from other times that can further our understanding today. What you said is irrelevant. It doesn’t even make sense.

At the time that faux doc was made by the supremely brilliant Chris Morris, Britain had released the names of convicted pedophiles to protect public safety. The result was that many people with similar names or addresses suffered extreme property and bodily harm as well as damage to their reputations by angry mobs on the streets and on the internet. He released that program to point up the dangers of hysteria. All of his work employed satire to point up the dependence of the news media on sensationalization that fuels outrage– and the many dangers of that tendency. He made fools of everyone. No one caught a break. Without Chris Morris there would be no Daily Show or all that followed. He created the form. That our satirical news shows run on the outrage he critiqued, without adequately acknowledging the risks therein, to not only truth and accuracy but also to manipulation, just shows how weak spirited we are.
It’s fucking obvious that pedophilia is abhorrent. No one needs to say it.
Morris conned real people, members of parliament and celebrities like Phil Collins into exposing their capacity to be fooled by their own righteousness.

It does not surprise me that you two can’t get it. We are all idiots. But no more so than when we are being moralistic.

Morris also made fun of terrorism in the brilliant Three Lions film. He researches these subjects exhaustively. That film, which was farce, has been pointed to by experts on extreme fundamentalist terrorism as the most accurate portrayal of how terrorists actually are (foolish and stupid and full of hypocrisy) than in any other media. The news plays them as brilliant and diabolical when in fact they are fools manipulated via their own righteousness into horrific behavior.

Condemnation is easy. Comedy about horror is the really really hard to pull off and brings us closer to the truth of our natures than just about any other form. Humor is also a survival strategy. Get over yourselves.

This could not be more inaccurate. All the viable solutions to climate change very specifically increase our capacity to sustain large populations at a high standard of living. And not just because they may prevent us from facing the impact of catastrophic climate change.

Do you really think coal and other fossil fuels are our only options or the best option? Why is cola mining considered a job worth protecting when its workers die 20 years before the rest of the population? We should not fear progress on energy solutions or disruption of energy markets. If you spend any time in a net zero house or drive a Tesla or, eventually, fly in a jet using alternative fuels and made of light weight and incredibly strong carbon fiber or drive on a solar roadway, you will not notice much difference from your current situation and very likely much improvement. Did your computer and the internet cause more harm than good to your daily life or harm the economy? (Think that one through, please…) They arguably changed our daily lives much more than climate change action will. Climate change acclimation, on the other hand, will be a real drag.

Generally speaking, people who have suffered real trauma learn very well how to handle and avoid triggers. They are everywhere. That’s part of learning to survive. They are usually much more interested in ending victimization than in ending triggers. People who have actually suffered trauma know they cant eliminate triggers. I’d argue holding the media to account for its sensationalism and plays to paranoia does more to help victims of abuse than to harm them. The media doesn’t give a shit about victims or it would leave them alone when they want to be left alone. The public rubbernecking on the tragedies of others is not empathy but schadenfreude.

HW– You are spinning out. You cant imagine how wrong you are about me and, I suspect, everything else.

I think you are confusing outrage with ‘the spark of life.’ There are millennia of spiritual philosophy that would directly contradict that notion. I don’t know what it feels like to carry so much anger and resentment and paranoia and fear with me daily, but it cant be enjoyable or healthy. You come over here to a very progressive liberal leaning blog to engage in battle, not to learn. Why do you think you seek out conflict? What brings you here? You’re not stupid. You must know you aren’t going to sway anyone. So what brings you here?

A lot of studies show that humans experience moral outrage as a sort of bliss–( https://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/28/opinion/sunday/whats-the-point-of-moral-outrage.html?_r=0 ) the kind of bliss one feels when one believes they are better than others. It’s instant ego inflation gratification for the insecure or sad.

Usually however, moral outrage is expressed towards outsiders from within a group of similarly minded people. You come here to express it, where your beliefs only draw attack. And then you quickly escalate into ad hominem attacks– abuse.

I suspect that’s why you come here– to feel justified in being abusive. I sincerely hope you get some help, because I both believe you are probably a risk to others, and I think it must be very hard to carry that much anger around daily. Others seems to find you amusing. I actually worry about you. I think you are likely a risk to others and yourself and in a whole lot of pain. I hope you find some way out of it. I don’t think you’ll find it here.

None of it is correct. All you are trying to do is derail me. It’s not going to work.

Since I posted this Thursday night, things have gotten even stranger.

Desperate Dems is more like it. No painting necessary to make Hillary look like what she is. A whole bunch of these corrupt politicians are going down on both sides, but mostly Dems. I think there is a whole lot happening behind the scenes that when it is revealed will make all the sense in the world. Fear Sessions and fear Assange.

How is Trump not kicking major ass? Isis is routed, the economy is booming, there is a change in culture regarding human rights reverberating around the world right now. Do you think it is a coincidence Saudi Arabia purged those corrupt princes months after Kushner’s mysterious visit? Who do you think funded Obama from Harvard right on through the presidency?

Is Hillary Clinton President? Will Hillary Clinton become President in the unlikely event that Donald Trump is impeached?

Given that the answers are no and no, I fail to see why Clinton’s emails matter.

Now, I don’t care if Clinton is convicted if she’s committed a crime, but I think that investigating possible obstruction of justice by the current POTUS somehow demands more attention.

    Crazy, I know.

    HW,

The economy is booming only because of the Fed’s manipulation of the money supply. They can, and will likely, destroy the economy at the time of their own choosing.

ISIS has relinquished territory, but has not been destroyed. They have been forced to change tactics and we will hear from them again.

Do you think it is a coincidence that Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the U.S. Are colluding to destroy Shite strongholds and the people in Iran are protesting in the streets? The U.S. Has been the rogue player in the geopolitical world for some time. What right do we have to overthrow the leadership of sovereign nations?

The Dems are outraged that Russia is suspected of involvement in the last election. The extent of involvement is that they allegedly released Hilliary’s emails. The damning evidence is the actual written words of the DNC and Hilliary’s campaign. Mueller’ investigation will go on for years and is intended to cause people to experience fatigue and drop further investigations into events of the past. Their defense of Hilliary’s past misdeeds is a strong offense against speculative events in the Trump campaign. Thank God that there are 4 ongoing investigations which will likely result in multiple indictments of Hilliary and her gang of miscreants.

    Jean,

This isn’t a blog where only progressive liberal leaning comments are allowed. You don’t have justification to personally attack persons who express other views. You stifle the conversations and your posts have diminished the diversity that once existed on this blog. Just look at your past posts – you are the one filled with hate and anger and ad hominem attacks and it is you who should seek help. HW responds to your initial attacks. You believe your point of view is the only possible correct view and that is just wrong. Last time it was mentioned, IL is an unemployed post-doc and I have a lifetime of actual work experience in the scientific field. Go figure.

Did I fuck up the way the material was presented, or don’t folks much care about the behind-the-sceens stuff playing out? Or was it just that you already knew everything I wrote about? It’s not that my feelings are hurt. I’m just curious.

What you are saying doesn’t resonate as much now because the narrative you have worked so hard to shore up has collapsed under the weight of reality. Collusion hopes getting fainter all the time. Sex abuse scandals over the heads of dozens of congress members (probably mostly Democrat – let’s be real,) whole bunch of good shit happening that I guess you don’t want to know.

Small change in words, big change in outcome. Strzok the obsessive anti-Trump FBI guy on the case? Who paid GPS Fusion? The IG report is coming out: “‘We’re moving along quite expeditiously.’

“The economy is booming only because of the Fed’s manipulation of the money supply. They can, and will likely, destroy the economy at the time of their own choosing.”

Not sure about that. A lot of things affect the economy. Investor confidence would be high on the list for starters.

“ISIS has relinquished territory, but has not been destroyed. They have been forced to change tactics and we will hear from them again.”

Relinquished almost all of their territory it is claimed. That’s good. It’s a good start.

“Do you think it is a coincidence that Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the U.S. Are colluding to destroy Shite strongholds and the people in Iran are protesting in the streets? The U.S. Has been the rogue player in the geopolitical world for some time. What right do we have to overthrow the leadership of sovereign nations?”

The CIA carried out a coup in Iran way back in 1953. They have had a bunch of dirty deals with them since (Iran Contra for instance). I don’t know how sovereign it is. Probably not very I guess. Are we taking part in overthrowing them now exactly or are we just cutting covert ties and letting the people surge in power? What has been propping up Iran besides dirty deals with CIA/Obama? Russia?

“Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the U.S. Are colluding to destroy Shite strongholds”

    Talking about Yemen or…?

Israel and Saudi Arabia are tied at the hip. I predict there will be a corruption purge in Israel too. Everybody gets a good scrubbing including and perhaps especially the USA.

EOS– I never suggested other points of view weren’t welcome. I think HW resorts to personal attack more than I do, certainly with more abusive language. If someone wants to do an analysis comparing our posts for such language, which is different than pointing up failures of logic, I would welcome that. I’m not going to bother. I know a lot of Republicans of all stripes. I can have reasonable discourse with them about policy and political strategy. That does not precluded mutual criticism of approach, but it never descends into invective as happens here. I tend to offer critique to all kinds of positions, sometimes even my own. I would welcome a greater diversity of voices here and have said so repeatedly. I do not think either you or HW are representative of most conservatives I know. If anyone is putting people off, I believe it is you two. It’s just a drag when a reasonable blog addressing solutions is met with anti-science, anti-abortion and conspiracy theory rants. Everyone knows there is no point in engaging ideologues.

Mark it’s a good post. My impression is your posts gain likes mostly from people not regularly commenting, but reading. Maybe I’m wrong. It may not be click bait as much as local news or more editorial posts, that does not mean it’s not worthy. All of your Russian posts have been on point from the beginning and they, in sum, will make a useful historical record of how it all went down. That’s enough value in and of itself to warrant continuing on.

The GOP congressional investigation turning on Steele and Fusion is not so surprising. They are essentially prosecuting a defense of the president by trying to undermine the credibility of the information gathered against him. That’s pretty standard. I don;t expect it to lead to much. The Fusion editorial was strongly stated and I have no reason to believe, at this point, that they would take such a public stance if they were concerned about prosecution. People at risk generally keep their mouths shut under advice from counsel. Steele is talking to Mueller. This should get even more interesting soon. I look forward to your updates.

You are way worse in personal attacks, Jean. Go back and read my and your posts since I started here over a year ago. I’ve treated you with kid gloves for the most part. It would be too brutal if I just let you have what you deserve.

I don’t know about anyone else but I do not consider myself or DJT for that matter to be a Republican. I am an Independent. I don’t really see myself as “conservative” either. That’s too loaded of a term. The 1D left/right paradigm is too limited. I need a couple more dimensions in there at least.

You are the anti-science one for the reasons I have stated in the past, not me. I do not recall ever ranting against abortion although I am not in favor of government-funded ones for sure. By using the term conspiracy theory you are proving you are a CIA dupe. That is the term the Warren Commission came up with to ridicule people with dangerous questions and information.

    Jan 5, 2018 2:39 PM EST
WASHINGTON — Two Republican senators have made the first known criminal referral in congressional investigations of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. They’re targeting the author of a dossier of allegations about President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham say they’ve referred former British spy Christopher Steele to the Justice Department for investigation about false statements he may have made about “the distribution of claims contained in the dossier.”

Lawmakers cannot prosecute criminal activity. But they generally refer any criminal violations they find to the Justice Department. The senators say part of the referral is classified.

The dossier was compiled during the campaign and contains allegations about Trump’s ties to Russia. It was partially paid for by Democrats.

BY JOHN SOLOMON – 01/04/18 08:35 PM EST
The Justice Department has launched a new inquiry into whether the Clinton Foundation engaged in any pay-to-play politics or other illegal activities while Hillary Clinton served as secretary of State, law enforcement officials and a witness tells The Hill.

FBI agents from Little Rock, Ark., where the foundation was started, have taken the lead in the investigation and have interviewed at least one witness in the last month, and law enforcement officials said additional activities are expected in the coming weeks.

The officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said the probe is examining whether the Clintons promised or performed any policy favors in return for largesse to their charitable efforts or whether donors made commitments of donations in hopes of securing government outcomes.

Except no crimes have been proven on either side. And they’ve been going at Clinton for 30 years, with nothing. They’ve been digging into Trump for 1 year and so far the vein is looking rich.

I don’t think HW is funny. I think he’s volatile and possibly dangerous. Not to us, but to whoever is so unfortunate to have to deal with him IRL. One thing we agree upon, HW, is that this is a time of great transformation in America. I don;t know how it will all play out, but I believe Trump is so incompetent and divisive that he is forcing Americans to choose. And the vast majority are rejecting him, even those who voted for him. In his descent into ignominy, he may just kill off white nationalism and anti-globalism and protectionism too. Good riddance. We are in transition, but the vast majority of Americans are not with you and very soon the vast majority of Americans will not look like you either. All Trump is doing is exposing the bigotry of America and challenging us to begin for real the process of ridding ourselves of it forever. If so, bring it on.
