Laura Ingram, in a monologue praised by David Duke, says, because of immigrants, “The America we know and love doesn’t exist anymore”

Last spring, when Fox News host Laura Ingraham decided to use her platform to personally attack a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, over a dozen companies, including the likes of Hulu and Office Depot, announced that they would no longer be running ads on the program. Ingraham took an unplanned leave of absence from the show, and, with time, some advertisers, like Ace Hardware, eventually came crawling back. [Advertisers love uninformed viewers, and Fox News has cultivated the largest audience of uninformed viewers known to mankind.] One would imagine the folks at Ace were assured, before announcing their return as a sponsor, that Ingraham, who has a long history of such things, would do her best in the future to tone down the hate speech to a barely audible, and plausibly deniable, dog whistle. Well, as we saw last night, that’s certainly not the case. In an unhinged rant about immigration, Ingraham, speaking to other clean white thoroughbreds like herself, brought her racial animus roaring to the surface, noting that “demographic changes” have stolen our country from us, the white European Americans who truly deserve to be here. “The America we know and love doesn’t exist anymore,” the racist Fox News host said.

As you might imagine, the rant got quite a bit of attention. Among those who approved wholeheartedly was “white nationalist politician, antisemitic conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, convicted felon, and former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan” David Duke, who called the monologue one of the most “important” and “truthful” in the history of American media.

While I don’t have an up-to-date list of all of Ingraham’s advertisers, I do know, through the magic of Twitter, how to reach @AceHardware, and you can be sure that I’ll be writing to them… They made a conscious decision to go back to Ingraham, after acknowledging that they understood just how dangerously toxic she was, and people should know that. Sadly, the only effective tool we have at our disposal right now, in this corporatocracy that we now live under, seems to be our choice as to where we spend our dollars, and I don’t see any reason why I’d support a company that knowingly promotes a viewpoint echoed by the likes of David Duke.

If Ace went back to Ingraham, and stayed with her over these past several months, as she told LeBron James to “shut up and dribble” when he came out against Donald Trump, and defended Alex Jones after Infowars was banned from several social media platforms, saying, “This is about freedom, and our access to information from sources we as individuals trust and like,” then, in my opinion, they deserve whatever might be coming their way.

I’ll just conclude by saying that this weekend marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly white supremacist “Unite the Right” march through the streets Charlottesville, and it will be marked by a gathering of white nationalists in D.C., right next to Donald Trump’s White House, in Lafayette Park. David Duke, you might be interested to know, is scheduled to address the crowd.

This needs to stop, and stop right now. Just because some individuals “trust and like” her, does not mean we should allow such vile hate speech on our publicly-owned airwaves. And, if the federal government won’t step in, we have to compel those companies who depend on us to keep paying their shareholder dividends, to do the right thing.

Apparently people really like it when you go on Twitter and smack down anti-Trump Republicans offering unsolicited advice to Democrats about how they need to be more moderate

Remember how, a few weeks ago, former FBI Director James Comey offered Democrats a bit of unsolicited advice in a tweet, telling us that we should eschew the “socialist left,” as “America’s great middle wants sensible, balanced, ethical leadership”? Well, this morning another high-profile former Republican, Weekly Standard founder Bill Kristol, stepped up to tell us on the left that, if we really wanted to win, we’d force Nancy Pelosi from her position as the leader of the Democratic caucus in the House. And, somehow, I got to be the first person to tell Kristol, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

While I, for the most part, like Kristol in his most recent incarnation, as someone who, though the new organization Republicans for the Rule of Law, is fighting to protect the Mueller investigation, I’m not inclined to let him off the hook for the role he played in creating the toxic environment that gave rise to Trumpism. He, as far as I could see, was fine with he lies of Fox News as long as they were serving his conservative interests. At least I don’t recall him leaving the party during the fake Benghazi hearings, or when Donald Trump was questioning whenever or not our country’s first black president was really a United States citizen. Sure, he’s come out recently, calling Fox News “ethno-nationalism,” and trying to rally his fellow Republicans against Donald Trump, but I don’t know that he’s ever taken responsibility for the role he played in creating this monster that he can no longer control.

I get the sense, when I read comments like this one today, that what Kristol wants is to remake the Democratic Party into something that he could see himself being a part of. The truth, however, is that the Republicans hate Pelosi for a reason. They hate her because she’s effective at pushing Democratic policies, like the ACA. And, if Kristol really wanted to defeat Trump, he’d stop telling us to remove our most effective leaders from power, and he’d start writing about how we should stop voter suppression and gerrymandering in this country. The truth is, Republican ideas are significantly less popular in this country than Democratic ideas. A vast majority of Americans actually want universal health care, quality public education, and policies that grow the middle class. The reason Republicans win, in spite of this, isn’t that Pelosi is ineffective. It’s because the Republicans have lied and cheated for the past 30 years or more, redrawing district lines to their advantage, making it more difficult for poor people of color to vote, and funding the dissemination of insane conspiracy theories. And, with all due respect to Bill Kristol, I’d like to see him helping on that front, instead of telling us which Democrats we should put out to pasture.

There was stuff that I wanted to write about tonight, but I’ve decided to watch Lifeboat instead

If you’d like to join me, you can rent 1944’s Lifeboat on Amazon for $3.99. If, however, you’re not a Hitchcok fan, you can feel free to use this as an open thread, and just leave a comment about whatever it is that you want to talk about, from today’s arrest of Republican Congressman Chris Collins to the-still-too-close-to-call race for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District. Or, if you want, you can just trade recipes, use the site like a dating app, or talk about the weather. I seriously don’t care. Just write about whatever you want. You can even post complaints.

Yeah, I feel pretty confident when I say that Jeff Irwin is going to win

[above: State Rep Yousef Rabhi and Jeff Irwin’s daughter conduct an impromptu shadow puppet battle over a photo of the man I expect to be our next State Senator.]

I suppose something unexpected might happen, but, when I left Jeff Irwin’s party just a few minutes ago at the Aut Bar in Ann Arbor, he was leading his primary challenger, Michelle Deatrick, by about 200 votes, with almost every precinct having reported in. So, while I’m a little wary about jinxing it, I think it’s probably safe to say, after double checking the most recent vote counts, that he’s going to be the next State Senator representing Michigan’s 18th district… assuming, of course, that he wins the general election come November, which is pretty much a given for the Democratic candidate in a district that spans the liberal enclaves of Ann Arbor and Ypsi. And, given what I know about Jeff, I am incredibly happy about that. We needed an experienced fighter for progressive causes in Lansing, and, I’m pleased to report, it looks as though that’s what we’re going to get. It’s rare that I endorse in local elections, but I felt really strongly that Jeff was the best candidate in this race, and I’m glad that he won what turned out to be an extremely close race against very well-funded candidates… I’d like to say more, but it’s late, and the gin and tonics at the Aut Bar are strong.

The tweet that should have won the internet today

I think Twitter must be fucking with me the way they fuck with other great patriots like Alex Jones and Diamonds and Silk, tweaking their algorithm to keep my message from the people. By now, if there were truly a level playing field, this tweet of mine should have had at least 10,000 shares. And you’ll never convince me otherwise… I demand a hearing!
