A message from the gay men and women of Michigan

nonmarryinggays

I should add that this wasn’t something that the gay men and women of Michigan asked for me to post on their behalf. I did’t receive a frantic call in the middle of the night from an anonymous member of the LGBTQ community, begging for me to issue a statement on their behalf. Still, though, I can’t help but think that, right now, a lot of gay couples across the state are being put in really uncomfortable positions by their friends, both gay and straight, who expect for them to run out and get married now that the Michigan ban on same-sex marriage has been found to be unconstitutional. Judging from Facebook, it’s as though every straight progressive in the state of Michigan has suddenly been transformed into a stereotypical Jewish mother, asking repeatedly, “So, when are you going to get married and give me some grandchildren?” Part of me thinks it’s only fair, as they’ve been able to avoid the constant badgering that those of us in unmarried straight unions have had to deal with for years, but I still feel bad for them, like they’re being put in a position where, unless they run out and get their forms todays, they have to publicly defend their decision. Hopefully this initial frenzy will only last for a week or so, and then things will return to normal, as legal same-sex ceremonies become more and more commonplace. In the meantime, though, I think we should all chill the fuck out just a little bit, and stop asking our gay and lesbian friends if we need to start having our suits and dresses cleaned for a ceremony this weekend.

Wishing Fred Phelps a fond farewell from the newly gay-friendly Great Lakes State

MIgay2

Am I the only one who found it interesting that, within hours of hearing that America’s most infamous homophobe, Fred Phelps, had passed away, that a federal judge ruled that Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional?

There’s a certain kind of poetic beauty in that, isn’t there?

Congratulations to all of my friends who will soon be lining up at courthouses across Michigan to obtain marriage licenses.

I know that the fight for equality isn’t over by a long shot, but it really does feel as though we’re moving from winter into spring in more than just a “this happens every year” sense.

The Washington Post on last night’s Wurst Challenge

WPcre

A more comprehensive post will come later, once I’ve had a little more time to process the whirlwind of insanity that was last night, but I wanted to pass along this image from today’s Washington Post… How awesome is it that Ypsi is getting positive national press? And how surreal is it that it took 20 foot long sausages to do it?

Only 373 people show to watch the EMU Eagles win their first postseason game since 1996… Let’s make it up to them if they get another home game

emubasketball

Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team had the distinction of making it onto the front page of Deadspin last night after the popular sports website was made aware of a series of justifiably angry social media posts made by starting EMU forward Glenn Bryant following the team’s 58-54 victory over the Norfolk State Spartans at the EMU Convocation Center. Bryant, as you can see in the following Twitter post, was none too pleased that only 373 people turned out to see the Eagles win their first postseason game since 1996.

HERE’S THE FIRST OF THE BRYANT’S TWEETS:

The EMU Convocation Center, by the way, seats 8,824. So that means fewer that 1 of every 20 seats was filled. (During the 19 regular season home games this year, according to the EMU athletic department, the team was drawing an average of 901 fans.) It’s also worth noting that tickets to the game were just $5 for students with valid EMU ID… Oh, and EMU has well over 23,000 students.

Given the hysteria over March Madness, I don’t think it’s too much of surprise that smaller postseason tournaments like the CIT (CollegeInsider.com Tournament), in which unranked teams that never get television airtime, like the Eastern Eagles, go head-to-head to keep their seasons alive, fail to attract much interest. Still, though, it’s criminal that only 373 from a campus community of close to 25,000 would turn out to cheer them on. I’m sure that most of these guys were playing in front of larger crowds in high school.

I’m not sure what the future holds for the Eagles, but, as I understand it, their next opponent will be determined tonight, and I suppose it’s conceivable that they’ll have another game this season at the Convention Center… And, if they are, I say we fill the place to the fucking rafters!

update: The next round will apparently be in NYC this Saturday night, where the Eastern Eagles will take on the Columbia University Lions. (For details, check out the comments section of this post.)

[note: While we’re on the subject of EMU organizations in desperate need of our support, the school’s radio station, the local NPR affiliate, WEMU, is approaching the end of their annual spring fundraising drive, and they’re still $83,000 away from their $200,000 goal. I know times are hard, but, if you have a few dollars, please consider making a donation. As evidenced by their recent coverage of our charitable sausage-eating activities, they really are making an effort to step in and fill the gap left open by the downsizing of our regional newspapers.]

EMU venturing into the community, making damn good videos

I’m not sure what I was expecting when I heard that the Eastern Michigan University office of Campus Life had produced a video about the Ypsi Food Co-op, but I was pleasantly surprised when, after thinking about it for a few days, I finally sat down and watched what they’d come up with… Here it is.

One hopes they keep the series going, as it has tons of potential.

[note: If you do go to the Co-op before the end of the month, be sure to take one of these 10% off coupons with you.]
