A new sign at the Water Street Commons native prairie

Thanks to the hard work of a lot of people, we now have a proper sign explaining the history and significance of the Water Street Commons native prairie. Special thanks go out especially to native plant experts Jason Tallant and Ben Connor Barrie for helping me with the text, Jeff Clark for designing the sign, the good folks at Grafaktri for fabricating it, Pete Larson for coming out with his chainsaw and trimming the post once we’d gotten the massive thing in the ground, and my daughter Clementine for helping me to mount it in the rain this morning. Unfortunately, the web address noted at the bottom of the sign isn’t yet active, but we’re hoping to have a rudimentary site up and running by the end of the week.

The last photo is pretty dark, but it really is quite lovely. The post with the sign is about ten feet back from the sidewalk, at the start of the trail. You can see it toward the right of the bottom photo.

Geeezzz, I just hope it lasts and someone doesn’t tear if off just to see if they can.

It’s possible. And I’ve got a replacement sign, just in case. And, if that one goes, we’ll move to metal. Some people are dicks. I’m hopeful, though. Most people, after all, aren’t. And I put it over ten feet off the sidewalk, so someone would have to walk into the prairie to smash it. My hope is that’ll be enough. You never know, though.

We also planted a ton of native seeds today. I hope to share some photos of that later as well… The rain is awesome.
