This one is a little late, as the sighting took place several weeks ago, but we’ve got another entry for the pencil paparazzi file. This incident, recorded painstakingly in graphite, involves the actress Hilary Swank, when she was in Ann Arbor, making the Betty Ann Waters biopic. We’d heard through the grapevine that she had made it a habit of eating at the restaurant Eve, and now we have confirmation. The following comes from an employee of said fine dining establishment.
“Well the event was interesting, because a big star was having dinner where I work! This was the first time Hilary and her entourage (Tony Goldwyn and others) came in for dinner. Hilary walked in incognito with a fleece hat on and a big coat, but was unmistakable. They stayed for several hours and ate dinner. Hilary later on asked the server if she could keep her pen.”
Remember to always carry a pencil, kids. And not just because Hilary Swank may take your pens. Celebrities are lurking around every corner these days, and they need to be documented for the pencil paparazzi file… Please send entries to markmaynard11@gmail.com.

Today two colleagues and I got asked to be extras in a movie filming on Depot St., that had people walking back and forth across the street. I was all excited – who would I see? Who was in this movie? What was the latest exciting movie shooting here?
But no, it was a movie being made by Washtenaw County Community Support & Treatment Services about successfully reentering the community after getting treatment for mental illness. Or something like that. It could be the first time in several years I could say I’ve gotten to use my social work degree…
I’d love to be cast as a person successfully reentering society. I would do wonders for my self-esteem.
Mark, you might get more participation and enjoy the results of the pencil paparazzi even more if you expanded your definition of “celebrity” to include local celebrities. I, for one, could submit a sketch of, say Ari Weinzweig (Zingerman’s) jogging (o.k., it would be based on a sighting that’s 7 years old), or Bob King (likely the next UAW president) working the cake walk at the school Ice Cream Social. You, yourself, are a local celebrity of sorts. Imagine the sketches that could flow in, sighting of you at the Corner Brewery or fishing Clementine out of the river…
I don’t draw very well, but I saw Mrs. Swank filming at Sav-A-Lot, then shopping at Dollar Tree. Later she came and pressed her face to the window at Aubrie’s as we all waved. Can someone draw that for me?
Yeah, all the other submissions have been so artistic…
