Looking at what happened in Portland, and the President’s response, I’m afraid that things are going to get a whole lot worse

Yesterday, several white nationalist groups descended on Portland, Oregon. The idea, it would seem, was for these heroic specimens of Arian perfection to bait the anti-fascist counter-protestors who had gathered in response into some kind of violent confrontation, in hopes that right-wing “journalists” like Andy Ngo might be able to get a few photos of the poor, helpless, peace-loving white patriots being besieged by lawless hoards of aggressive people of color. Sadly for the white provocateurs, the anti-fascists, for the most part, didn’t give them what they wanted. [Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler described the day’s events as “largely peaceful” and only 13 people were arrested.] But, all was not lost. According to Proud Boys organizer Joe Briggs, the event was a success because Donald Trump had weighed in on their side. When a reporter from The Oregonian asked Briggs to elaborate on why he thought the event was a success, he said “Go look at President Trump’s twitter.”

Here’s the tweet that Briggs’s was referring to.

Donald Trump did not condemn the so-called Proud Boys, or the other white nationalist hate groups that came together in Portland. He did not take the opportunity to appeal to our nation’s higher self, as Obama and other presidents have done. He did not even pretend to pray for everyone’s safety. No, less than two weeks after a white, racist gunman took the lives of 22 in El Paso, the President of the United States deliberately chose not to note the rise in racist right-wing violence in America. Instead, he chose to call the anti-fascists standing up to these men an “organization of terror.” [To my knowledge, anti-fascists have yet to kill anyone, whereas white supremacists have claimed the lives of at least 62 people since Trump came into office.] This is the point we’ve now come to. Racists are rallying in broad daylight in the streets of America, and the President of the United States, instead of standing up to them, is threatening those who do, labeling them terrorists.

We’re at a very dark place in American history, and I’m afraid it’s only going to get worse. With a recession looming, an increasingly desperate Donald Trump, I suspect, is going to be left with no choice but to double down on racial grievance, and the politics of fear. What else does he have in his bag of tricks to keep the MAGA base energized and hold onto Wisconsin? He can keep telling people that the economy is better than it’s ever been, but at some point they’re going to figure out the truth. And, without the economy to prop him up, he’s not only going to need the vote of every cereal-loving incel Proud Boy in America, but he’s going to need to push more non-college educated white males into their ranks.

Donald Trump knows that, if he loses the election, he’ll likely face prosecution for his crimes, and he’s not about to let that happen. He doesn’t want to go out in a federal prison like his friend Jeffrey Epstein, and he’s going to do whatever he can to ensure that doesn’t happen, regardless of how many people may be hurt in the process, or how much damage may be done to our already fragile democracy. As we know, he doesn’t care about anyone other than himself, and he’d rather take us to the brink of civil war than face responsibility for a life of criminal activity. And, sadly, it’s non-white Americans that are going to pay the price, as he attempts to build a winning coalition of terrified and angry white people struggling to make ends meet. He may try to juice the economy for a bit by bullying the Federal Reserve into dropping interest rates again, but that won’t get him to November. And, in the end, he’s going to have to do what every other fascist leader has done, and fully embrace hate and fear.

Obviously you didn’t fuckin’ watch it. I saw a number of faces you would call colored among the Proud Boys attending. Not too many “coloreds” as you say with antifa. Hard to tell what color a communist ninja is but sometimes you get a glimpse behind the mask.

As I understand it, “Antifa” has no formal leadership, nor any specific organizational hierarchy – rather, it mostly exists as an informal banner for set of loosely-affiliated groups and ideologies.

Still, that hasn’t stopped the right-wing from using the “A”-word as a powerful propaganda tool. To read some alt-right blogs (and especially the comments), one would think Antifa represents a powerful, well-organized, and growing army of left-wing radicals, preparing to undermine the very fabric of American democracy.

Once Trump is able to label Antifa a “terrorist” organization, it will be easy for him and his fascist friends to label virtually anyone who doesn’t support MAGA 100% as a member – and thus a terrorist (or at least a terrorist sympathizer).

I don’t think Trump’s tweet is all that surprising, nor do I think it was random. More likely, just one small part of a larger, orchestrated plan.

If a number of people commit crimes is it much less of a problem if they are loosely organized? I don’t see how that is supposed to be any kind of defense.

Antifa very much fits the definition of terrorism: the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. Time’s up for the commie ninjas.

I think it is waning and not that powerful but they are organized enough to all show up when and where they are supposed to. The many physical attacks by antifa, often with weapons are proof they are dangerous though. Certainly if they had their way the fabric of society would be toast. You don’t think adopting Soviet-style Communism would be much of a threat to our way of life?

‘Isn’t People Of Color another iteration of Colored People?’
    No.
People of Color is a name adopted and promoted by the broad demographic signified by that name. It’s intention is to incorporate in one term the many races facing discrimination by the white majority in this country. ‘Colored people’ and, worse, ‘coloreds’ is a term created by the white majority and so imbued with the racist connotation of white supremacy.

Any good conservative or libertarian should honor the right of any group to name themselves and their interests.

  21. Jean Henry
    Posted August 19, 2019 at 7:40 am | Permalink

Why don’t you ask your Black friends how they feel about your use of the term ‘colored.’ As for me personally, when I’m referring to Black Americans unique experience/situation or individuals, I use the term Black. When I’m referring to the experience of the larger group of non-White Americans I use POC. I’m following the lead of the groups identified in all these cases. I try to avoid terminology imbued with racist history. ‘colored’ is the word used in signage demarking segregated public and private facilities. There was good reason to move on. Words don’t make the necessary changes but they can prevent it when used carelessly.

I didn’t make up the term. They did. They can correct it if the choose and I would follow. If you have a problem with the use of the term ‘colored’ then I suggest you personally refrain from using it going forward.

    Bonglicker,
Not wanting to fight and being unwilling to fight are two different things. Courage is overcoming natural fear and doing what is required when it’s required. This was something that real Americans like the Nazi killers of the Greatest Generation understood.

Wanting to fight and kill like your Nazi political brethren do is a sickness that will be dealt with one way or another.

HW— when one actively listens to what POC have to say and reads what they write, one can observe their use of the term in self-reference. When that stops being the predominate term of self-reference in group context, I’ll stop using it. I don’t make these choices because I’m afraid of offending anyone. That’s not the point at all. Proud-boys are about the most cowardly cry-bully group I have encountered. I went to a community for a peaceful protest in a flack jacket and full riot gear and a club got hurted. Waaaaaaah. They are essentially a cowardly version of the Klan, hiding behind the words of the segregationist south like culture. They don’t have the courage to actually talk about what they believe in. They don’t have the courage to own the violence they intend to instigate. Just generally soft and cowardly.

I believe that a rally like that needs to be held behind a barricade paid for by protestors. My parents guaranteed peace in these circumstances and I was proud of them. Antifa is loosely organized but funded by Soros.
    https://capitalresearch.org/article/origins-of-antifa/

French colonists used the term gens de couleur (“people of color”) to refer to people of mixed African and European descent who were freed from slavery in the Americas.[6] In South Carolina and other parts of the Deep South, this term was used to distinguish between slaves who were mostly “black” or “negro” and free people who were primarily “mulatto” or “mixed race”.

No “group” speaks in a monolithic voice. Various persons, who some call POC, prefer to be called Black, African American, Asian, Pakistani, Indian, Native American, Hispanic, Latino/Latina, Chicano and many others. Many prefer to be identified by their country rather than their race or ethnicity. Some are proud to be Chicano, while others detest the label and consider it derogatory.

To say all individuals of any group prefer the exact same thing is racist or sexist or another discriminatory label. Why can’t we let individuals speak for themselves.

It appears that Jean (and her alias’s) is again ruining any chance of discussion with her animosity. SMH.

I think it is an understandable reaction to having a violent white supremacist organization show up armed in your community. There is an inherent threat there. Seeing no argument from you on ideology that is what we will agree the Proud Boys are. Thus Anti-fa is really people running for the exits when someone has yelled fire, a natural reaction to aggression. My goal would be to protect the community from these groups interacting. Keep protests to one area cordoned off and arrest anyone who does anything as we did with the Klan. The Proud Boys are about violence and menacing people I don’t see them being interested in coming to a place with a guaranteed peaceful protest.

Okay, so you think those conditions have been met in today’s world, right? “…having a violent white supremacist organization show up armed in your community…” You already said it has been. Then you agree with antifa communism is best for the currently white supremacist USA besieged by Proud Boys.

I’ve said plenty of things to the contrary. I put up a vid in this thread that I consider strong evidence. Two vids actually and referred to more. There are Proud Boys of many genetic backgrounds and I have yet to see them speaking or behaving in a racist manner. All your side can say is blacks who don’t buy your line are either paid off or plain Uncle Toms. I’m pretty sure you would be easily verbally dismantled if you tried to say that face to face to a black Proud Boy or a regular black MAGA supporter for that matter. I’ve seen many try and get schooled

Explain it as I understand it? To join you have to say you are a Western Chauvinist and you do not apologize for creating the modern world. I guess that about sums it up. I don’t think they say everything about the West is good. You do know Chauvinism is a synonym for ethnocentrism. The idea dead ends in white supremacism. It is why you find the lot in the same places. It is cultural supremacism and ignores the massive contributions of people of all colors who helped create the world we live in.

Western Chauvinist “ideology” is a fraud. Modern western culture is and has been for a very long time an amalgamation of all the best stuff of all the worlds cultures. Western culture rips off everyone else’s intellectual property. Arabic numerals, Chinese gun powder, Socialized medicine/fire/police/education, potatoes, etc. Sounds like its really just a celebration of all the great stuff stolen through colonialism. So, Supremacy in other words. Got it.

So ignoring all that because that was crazy. While I don’t think anyone would confuse me with a communist I did study history. The problem with one culture taking credit for anything in modernity is we stand on the shoulders of others. The west was a cultural backwater before 400 years ago, this is a shorter period than several Chinese dynasties that were the most developed in the world at their time. America’s time in the sun has been even shorter. We stand on the work of thousands of cultures that came before us. We have been a cultural backwater through much of history. Are the Mayans and Aztecs western? Who is west? The other problem with the argument is it argues things are great which aren’t really settled. The industrial revolution will mean nothing if global warming devastates human life and causes societal collapse, in fact it could be seen as a negative. We almost ended the world twice in my lifetime with nuclear weapons. We mechanized murder, killing millions. We may just be lucky we haven’t destroyed ourselves yet.

Why does the left believe any POC can march down Main Street announcing their pride in their heritage, but any white individual who does likewise is a racist that should be beaten and attacked by Antifa. Why does the left idolize Antifa protesters who attack those with different political beliefs, break laws and destroy the property of innocent bystanders – all because a group of white people aren’t ashamed of their heritage and their culture? How is it that the vast majority of those on the left, who are white themselves, come to harbor such self hatred?

Why does the left think it is OK for U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar to visit Israel with the intent to interfere with that nation’s politics? BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) is a strategy to destroy the economy of Israel and throw the country into disarray. Isn’t this a far greater level of interference than anonymously posting Facebook posts? And when Israel told Tlaib she could visit her grandma but not engage in politics that would weaken their nation, why is the left even the least bit outraged? Don’t they have a right to control activities in their sovereign nation?

Why does the left support Elizabeth Warren who is paler than 99% of all whites to be lauded as the first woman of color hired as a law professor at Harvard? Why is it OK for this privileged white woman to steal the voice of the oppressed in our nation? And how could you consider this subterfuge as something to be overlooked as she seeks the highest office in our country?

Does the left really think it is politically expedient to hide behind minorities who can do anything without any repercussions, calling the right facists and racists while they do the same thing. Hilliary made a gross error by calling 50% of the American population deplorables. So why does the left think it is politically advantageous to call 50% of the American population racists and fascists?

And why is the left apparently so blind to their double standards?

And no, it will not always blow up in anyone’s face. There are enough people with good wholesome moral values to ensure that we will keep moving towards equality.

No, Lynne. We have gone through this discussion many times. You have never shown any sign that you are willing to break free from your own bigot-logic. Identity Politics is not people coalescing around a common cause and fighting to further their shared cause–that is just normal politics. Normal, necessary, and natural.

Likewise the people who reject identity politics are not trying to keep other people down.

If you want to know what identity politics is just look at your own writings and the writing of many people in this thread. Figure it out. All the clues you need for figuring out ‘what it is’ are in your writings.

Hyborion refuses to say what he likes about the Proud Boy philosophy, but admits, “I do appreciate it when weapon-wielding commie ninjas get wasted by Proud Boys.” It’s hard to know where to start, but here are a few initial thoughts. 1. I don’t know that being anti-fascist makes one a “commie”. 2. the only weapon I know of – a hammer – was brought to the rally by the Proud Boys. And 3. I don’t know that any anti-fascists were “wasted” by the Proud Boys… Regardless, it seems as though you’re saying that you don’t accept the Proud Boy ideology, but just enjoy their violence toward people whose opinions you disagree with. Is that pretty much it?

“I don’t know that being anti fascist makes one a commie”–Mark

Antifa is made up people who are mostly not anti fascist despite their attempts to define themselves as such and they are comprised mostly of self-described communist. Jesus man. Are you trying to claim that antifa is not comprised of people with communist ideals?

“Hyborion refuses to say what he likes about the Proud Boy philosophy”–Mark

Why would HW have any burden to say what he likes about the philosophy of some group, which he has said he is not a part of? As far as I can tell HW is saying he does not like the antifa because they have a pattern of using violence and physicality against people who have ideas that are different from their own. Do you want to defend antifa? I wouldn’t do it unless you are willing to do a little homework. There is tons of video to analyze. You might want to take a few days off from consuming/ parroting the narratives of your favorite “journalists” to turn your attention to many of the first-hand-pov-videos out there to educate yourself on antifa before you even think about trying to defend antifa….

“The emergence of the two narratives based on the same facts, each with some grounding in reality, tells us a great deal about what’s going on in modern politics.

The right and some parts of the center need there to be a thuggish left, something that allows them to say that “both sides” are equally extreme in the Trump era even though that’s plainly untrue. Meanwhile, there’s a hunger among some parts of the left for a more radical and aggressive politics beyond the ballot box — a sense that the surge in racism and bigotry is so threatening that there’s no choice but to take to the streets and physically confront the pro-Trump right.

The debate over the attack on Andy Ngo, then, isn’t really a debate over press freedoms. It’s an expression of two divergent visions of where American politics is at right now — and who the biggest threats to its security are.”

    https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/7/3/20677645/antifa-portland-andy-ngo-proud-boys

This entire comment section is simply repeating our own narratives. None of us have learned anything here in ages. None of us will. Not here anyway. Politics right now is both dangerous and boring. It’s impossible to have a serious discussion about anything. I hope this is all worth it. I think the Chinese had it wrong when they called such historical moments ‘interesting times.’ Or maybe we just don’t have enough distance yet.

At any rate, there is no reasonable defense of white supremacists or white supremacist protestors. (And the Proud Boys meet HW’s own definition of white supremacists) It really doesn’t matter whether Antifa is excessively violent or not.

But it would be helpful if you could specifically reference the times where my posts were inconsistent with a conservative political view.

There are many here that have voiced support for Antifa. There is no one who has voiced support for white supremacists. I sincerely hope no one here would consider using violence to support a political viewpoint.

EOS, I don’t support Antifa. They are being used as pawns in the fascist manipulations of alternative facts. But I am virulently anti-fascist, so I understand their reaction. And I support all Americans willing to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign or domestic. I hear you JB. I’m glad you don’t support fascists. Neither do I.

Unfortunately the Constitution has not been adhered to by either party for my entire life.

When was the last time Congress declared war? Or regulated our money supply? Where is the constitutional amendment that allows for massive numbers of federal bureaucrats dictating new laws by transcribing unlimited volumes of new regulations into the Congressional record? Where is the authority in the constitution for judges to abandon the written laws and fabricate laws of their own choosing? Which part of the Constitution gives supranational authority to the United Nations?

After WWII they decided it was too difficult to amend the Constitution – so they began to ignore the parts they didn’t like. I would like for us to return to a Constitutional form of government but don’t think it is likely.

The Whitmore Lake area is full of great people and an awful lot of White Supremacists (who do not qualify for the former category). It’s also increasingly diverse as it’s the cheapest place to live near Ann Arbor jobs. There are few problems but one has to wonder how my Black, Latinx and Jewish neighbors feel following behind trucks like that, or standing in line at the Speedway behind someone with an Iron Cross tattoo and a “Welcome to America now learn English” shirt. I have made clear here that I don’t think condemning outright white supremacists constitutes being anti-racist. It’s way too easy. And it lets us all off the hook for the systemic and cultural racism for which we are all responsible and about which we do far too little.
    BUT
Open White Supremacists are distinct precisely in that their existence in public constitutes reasonable, palpable physical threat to many. Please imagine what that might feel like if you were a member of one of the targeted demographics.

The Racist, Racist, Racist label for Trump is no more accurate than the Russian, Russian, Russian collusion was accurate. It’s a tactic advocated by Saul Alinsky in Rules for Radicals that has been so overused it is ineffective and has the opposite effect. MSM may never recover their credibility. Those who have been throwing shade on Trump will soon realize it has been misdirected.

A vote for Hillary was a vote for corruption and her election would have been far more harmful to the country. The FBI’s gift of immunity for Cheryl Mills is being investigated by the current IG and DOJ and will be part of the evidence against Comey, Clapper, and Brennan and their attempt to blackmail Clinton, Rubio, Cruz, and Trump. It’s ironic that because she has immunity she is revealing everything.

1973: The US Department of Justice — under the Nixon administration, out of all administrations — sued the Trump Management Corporation for violating the Fair Housing Act. Federal officials found evidence that Trump had refused to rent to black tenants and lied to black applicants about whether apartments were available, among other accusations. Trump said the federal government was trying to get him to rent to welfare recipients. In the aftermath, he signed an agreement in 1975 agreeing not to discriminate to renters of color without admitting to discriminating before.

1980s: Kip Brown, a former employee at Trump’s Castle, accused another one of Trump’s businesses of discrimination. “When Donald and Ivana came to the casino, the bosses would order all the black people off the floor,” Brown said. “It was the eighties, I was a teenager, but I remember it: They put us all in the back.”

1988: In a commencement speech at Lehigh University, Trump spent much of his speech accusing countries like Japan of “stripping the United States of economic dignity.” This matches much of his current rhetoric on China.

1989: In a controversial case that’s been characterized as a modern-day lynching, four black teenagers and one Latino teenager — the “Central Park Five” — were accused of attacking and raping a jogger in New York City. Trump immediately took charge in the case, running an ad in local papers demanding, “BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!” The teens’ convictions were later vacated after they spent seven to 13 years in prison, and the city paid $41 million in a settlement to the teens. But Trump in October 2016 said he still believes they’re guilty, despite the DNA evidence to the contrary.
1991: A book by John O’Donnell, former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, quoted Trump’s criticism of a black accountant: “Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. … I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not anything they can control.” Trump at first denied the remarks, but later said in a 1997 Playboy interview that “the stuff O’Donnell wrote about me is probably true.”

1992: The Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino had to pay a $200,000 fine because it transferred black and women dealers off tables to accommodate a big-time gambler’s prejudices.

1993: In congressional testimony, Trump said that some Native American reservations operating casinos shouldn’t be allowed because “they don’t look like Indians to me.”

2000: In opposition to a casino proposed by the St. Regis Mohawk tribe, which he saw as a financial threat to his casinos in Atlantic City, Trump secretly ran a series of ads suggesting the tribe had a “record of criminal activity [that] is well documented.”

2004: In season two of The Apprentice, Trump fired Kevin Allen, a black contestant, for being overeducated. “You’re an unbelievably talented guy in terms of education, and you haven’t done anything,” Trump said on the show. “At some point you have to say, ‘That’s enough.’”

2005: Trump publicly pitched what was essentially The Apprentice: White People vs. Black People. He said he “wasn’t particularly happy” with the most recent season of his show, so he was considering “an idea that is fairly controversial — creating a team of successful African Americans versus a team of successful whites. Whether people like that idea or not, it is somewhat reflective of our very vicious world.”

2010: In 2010, there was a huge national controversy over the “Ground Zero Mosque” — a proposal to build a Muslim community center in Lower Manhattan, near the site of the 9/11 attacks. Trump opposed the project, calling it “insensitive,” and offered to buy out one of the investors in the project. On The Late Show With David Letterman, Trump argued, referring to Muslims, “Well, somebody’s blowing us up. Somebody’s blowing up buildings, and somebody’s doing lots of bad stuff.”

2011: Trump played a big role in pushing false rumors that Obama — the country’s first black president — was not born in the US. He even sent investigators to Hawaii to look into Obama’s birth certificate. Obama later released his birth certificate, calling Trump a ”carnival barker.” (The research has found a strong correlation between “birtherism,” as this conspiracy theory is called, and racism.) Trump has reportedly continued pushing this conspiracy theory in private.

2011: While Trump suggested that Obama wasn’t born in the US, he also argued that maybe Obama wasn’t a good enough student to have gotten into Columbia or Harvard Law School, and demanded Obama release his university transcripts. Trump claimed, “I heard he was a terrible student. Terrible. How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard?”
Trump launched his campaign in 2015 by calling Mexican immigrants “rapists” who are “bringing crime” and “bringing drugs” to the US. His campaign was largely built on building a wall to keep these immigrants out of the US.

As a candidate in 2015, Trump called for a ban on all Muslims coming into the US. His administration eventually implemented a significantly watered-down version of the policy.
When asked at a 2016 Republican debate whether all 1.6 billion Muslims hate the US, Trump said, “I mean a lot of them. I mean a lot of them.”

He argued in 2016 that Judge Gonzalo Curiel — who was overseeing the Trump University lawsuit — should recuse himself from the case because of his Mexican heritage and membership in a Latino lawyers association. House Speaker Paul Ryan, who endorsed Trump, later called such comments “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Trump has been repeatedly slow to condemn white supremacists who endorse him, and he regularly retweeted messages from white supremacists and neo-Nazis during his presidential campaign.

He tweeted and later deleted an image that showed Hillary Clinton in front of a pile of money and by a Jewish Star of David that said, “Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!” The tweet had some very obvious anti-Semitic imagery, but Trump insisted that the star was a sheriff’s badge, and said his campaign shouldn’t have deleted it.

Trump has repeatedly referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) as “Pocahontas,” using her controversial — and later walked-back — claims to Native American heritage as a punchline.
At the 2016 Republican convention, Trump officially seized the mantle of the “law and order” candidate — an obvious dog whistle playing to white fears of black crime, even though crime in the US is historically low. His speeches, comments, and executive actions after he took office have continued this line of messaging.

In a pitch to black voters in 2016, Trump said, “You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?”

Trump stereotyped a black reporter at a press conference in February 2017. When April Ryan asked him if he plans to meet and work with the Congressional Black Caucus, he repeatedly asked her to set up the meeting — even as she insisted that she’s “just a reporter.”

In the week after white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017, Trump repeatedly said that “many sides” and “both sides” were to blame for the violence and chaos that ensued — suggesting that the white supremacist protesters were morally equivalent to counterprotesters that stood against racism. He also said that there were “some very fine people” among the white supremacists. All of this seemed like a dog whistle to white supremacists — and many of them took it as one, with white nationalist Richard Spencer praising Trump for “defending the truth.”

Throughout 2017, Trump repeatedly attacked NFL players who, by kneeling or otherwise silently protesting during the national anthem, demonstrated against systemic racism in America.

Trump reportedly said in 2017 that people who came to the US from Haiti “all have AIDS,” and he lamented that people who came to the US from Nigeria would never “go back to their huts” once they saw America. The White House denied that Trump ever made these comments.

Speaking about immigration in a bipartisan meeting in January 2018, Trump reportedly asked, in reference to Haiti and African countries, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” He then reportedly suggested that the US should take more people from countries like Norway. The implication: Immigrants from predominantly white countries are good, while immigrants from predominantly black countries are bad.
Trump denied making the “shithole” comments, although some senators present at the meeting said they happened. The White House, meanwhile, suggested that the comments, like Trump’s remarks about the NFL protests, will play well to his base. The only connection between Trump’s remarks about the NFL protests and his “shithole” comments is race.

Trump mocked Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign, again calling her “Pocahontas” in a tweet before adding, “See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!” The capitalized “TRAIL” is seemingly a reference to the Trail of Tears — a horrific act of ethnic cleansing in the 19th century in which Native Americans were forcibly relocated, causing thousands of deaths.

Trump tweeted that several black and brown members of Congress — Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) — are “from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” and that they should “go back” to those countries. It’s a common racist trope to say that black and brown people, particularly immigrants, should go back to their countries of origin. Three of four of the members of Congress whom Trump targeted were born in the US.

So Jean, since I cannot assume you understand the significance of any particular thing the quote about 1,000 individuals and 91% being black answers your question about what First Step has to do with Trump and racism. He is rolling back discriminatory sentencing implemented in the past by repubs and dems alike. It is a fine gesture that begins a process of reconciliation. Certainly it is anti-racist.

I was working. Also you bore me, HW.

I’m sure since Trump is such a great friend to Black Americans, this time he’ll get more than 10% of their votes.

I have never claimed that either party has treated Black Americans well. Quite the opposite. The Dems only have their support because they aren’t out an out racist like Republicans. Many Black people are socially conservative. It amazes me that the GOP hasn’t figured out how to gain their support. Maybe Trump is onto something with this half assed measure. It was the only bi partisan legislation he was able to pass. Weak sauce given the scope of the problem but welcome nonetheless. Let’s see if he funds the programs.

It’s good to hear you acknowledge that Black Americans have been treated differently and unjustly by the judicial system, HW.

I agree that Dems have failed Black Americans. I even agree that a lot of liberalism smacks of plantation thinking– more pity than empathy or meaningful action. In light of that, it’s amazing the GOP has fucked up so badly. I haven’t seen the GOP do much at all to gain their support. The bar is very very low. They actively alienate them. There’s no other possible explanation for their inability to attract Black voters. White liberals ‘lying; to them isn’t explanation enough. Black Americans aren’t without critical capacity. They have many criticisms of white liberalism but still have never voted GOP in decent numbers ever. I guess we’ll see if “many, many black people” are willing to vote GOP in 2020…

Connor Betts was antifa. If I were you I’d be alarmed by the similarity with what certain people on here say.

    https://nypost.com/2019/08/06/dayton-shooter-may-be-antifas-first-mass-killer/

Betts had long expressed support for antifa accounts, causes and individuals. That would be the loose network of militant leftist activists who physically attack anyone to the right of Mao in the name of “anti-fascism.” In particular, Betts promoted extreme hatred of American border enforcement.

“Kill every fascist,” the shooter declared in 2018 on twitter, echoing a rallying cry of antifa ideologues. Over the next year, his tweets became increasingly violent. “Nazis deserve death and nothing else,” he tweeted last October. Betts frequently flung the label “Nazi” at those with whom he disagreed online.

HW, I hate to expose your extreme stupidity yet again. Please quote ANTIFA propaganda which expresses hatred of minorities which would incite Betts seemingly indiscriminate murder of people hanging out at bars. You should also be sure to find the ANTIFA propaganda which incited him to murder his sister. Your STUPIDITY is simply outstanding. Historically, the Nazi and then our CIA utilized mass murder (bombings usually) to provide the State with the justification for rounding up leftest and minorities. Please note the Leaders rhetoric at his New Hampshire campaign event (I know you never bother to actually listen to the Leader–only following him blindly) he advocates selective gun seizures from the “mentally unfit”. The Leader is following the Nazi program of first demonizing minorities, and then actually begin stripping citizenship rights from the “mentally ill”. The first Nazi concentration camps were in fact used to house the “mentally ill”. The first extermination experiments were used on the “mentally ill”. You and your Nazi pals are just stupid willing dupes. You know nothing but the propaganda that Q dribbles into your mind. Again find ANTIFA propaganda that incites the killing of minorities. The one ANTIFA activist who actually took up arms was, Sporson murdered by private security guards hired by ICE when he attempted to burn the ICE Vans. If Betts was in fact an ANTIFA inspired terrorist he would have gunned down Miller. Leftest know who the enemy is, and it is not our fellow citizens.

By the way the Communist Party of Germany allied with the National Socialist Party in attacks on the Social Democrats who they considered to be the worst fascists.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifaschistische_Aktion

The KPD viewed the Nazi Party ambigiously during the early 1930s; on one hand the KPD considered the Nazi Party to be one of the fascist parties, albeit a lesser evil than the SPD, on the other hand the KPD sought to appeal to the left wing of the Nazi movement by using nationalist slogans.[1] The KPD sometimes cooperated with the Nazis in attacking the social democrats.[21] In 1931 the KPD had united with the Nazis, whom they referred to as “working people’s comrades,” in an unsuccessful attempt to bring down the social democrat state government of Prussia by means of a referendum.[22]

In October 1931 a coalition of right-wing and far-right parties had established the Harzburg Front that opposed the government of the Centre Party’s Heinrich Brüning, and in response the social democrats and affiliated groups had established the Iron Front that sought to defend liberal democracy and the constitution of the Weimar Republic; the latter opposed both Nazism and Communism and was viewed by the KPD as a “social fascist terror organisation.”[4]

Daily Beast: “Right-Wing Star Andy Ngo Exits Quillette After Damning Video Surfaces”

The conservative op-ed website Quillette announced Monday night that controversial right-wing writer Andy Ngo is leaving his job as an editor at the site, an announcement that comes on the same day that a Portland newspaper published a story revealing that Ngo witnessed a far-right group planning violence but never reported it.

Ngo, a photographer who was until recently a sub-editor at Quillette, became a celebrity on Fox News and other pro-Trump media outlets after he was attacked by left-wing demonstrators at a Portland political rally in June. Ngo then became prominent as an opponent of political violence, with most of his criticism aimed at the left.

Aloha FF, pretty boring video but at about the 15 min they start talking about the “great” socialist programs for housing relief in Washington. “Programs for Vets who can’t pay the rent”, “Programs for the elderly who can’t pay their taxes.” “Hey that’s good” “Property taxes are the worst, they are the only ones you can’t avoid”. One guy also seemed to get kinda excited about discovering a strip joint on the way. A more confused group of folks would be hard to find–what is it with the black Gadsen flag? Are they trying to be anarcho-facsist or something (can’t be anymore confused than that except for atheist who believe in Satan maybe)?
All in all pretty stupid, but as such they could hurt either themselves or others badly. Wearing helmets and goggles, carrying bricks, pepper spray, clubs, (all of which were being carried as concealed weapons) just a peaceful group of folks. And of course announcing to themselves that there is going to be a fight.
Looked to me more like a cultural bonding excursion than anything approaching a political parade. The Hell’s Angel’s had more political coherency than this group expresses.

Gods of the Blood: The Pagan Revival and White Separatism. Durham: Duke University Press. 2003. ISBN 0-8223-3059-8.

Dr. Gardell is a renowned theologian who has spent a life time studying the “spiritual” underpinnings of extremest ideologies. I got to know him when he was working on his first book “Countdown to Armageddon: Minister Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam in the Latter Days.”

Of course as White Power gets main streamed you end up with the absolute confusion that was apparent in the video that FF shared, but the leaders of this movement have a “spiritual” underpinning–

Actually, I do not think they were particularly confused at all. They shared a specific sense that they had a right to walk on public sidewalk without being harassed, they knew they would get harassed/ attacked, and they all seemed willing to accept the consequences of exercising their right.

Antifa, from the outside, gives the group its coherence. These types of clashes are a necessary result of the natural unfolding of identity politics. It’s how bigotry manifests itself in the world. It is stupid, it is unnecessary, it is wrong, but it is real.

If they want to be “protected” in the exercise of their “rights”-then get a parade permit and have the state there to protect you. They were thugs invading some one else’s home. They came there looking for trouble. I would have given it to them to (I keep my bat by my front door and have gone out into the street with it more than once to confront stupid people). I’m sorry you just have no since of real life but live in some bullshit abstraction. ” It is stupid, it is unnecessary, it is wrong, but it is real.” and we should stomp them out. They engaged in a dozen illegal acts. Carrying concealed weapons, marching without a permit, inciting to riot, premeditated assault with intent to kill. Just so you know “Antifa” folks have been charged with all those crimes. Those who protested on inauguration day faced prison terms in the 20 to 30 year range. You seem to be afflicted by the same moral relativity that EOS and JH frequently exhibit.

I am truly unaware of gays, lesbians, queers, transexual folks marching through the streets of white hetro america looking for fights. I am unaware of black or hispanic folks armed to the teeth marching through white neighborhoods looking to provoke fights.

I don’t think my comment was idiotic at all, DD. I have not gone too deep into Patriot Prayer but my sense is they are primarily a “freedom of speech” and “freedom of movement” movement that was created in response to the rise of the fascist/illegal/anti-American tactics practiced by the group that calls themselves Antifa.

Groups of people have every right to walk by your house even if you think they are bad people, DD. The fact that you are willing to beat people, with a bat, when you do not like those people,, for walking past your house is an interesting admission. The fact that you just admitted we should practice violence against people who say things we do not agree with makes you at odds with our laws.

You are falsely claiming I don’t want people punished for breaking laws. I am not advocating that the people who willing got into fights should not be prosecuted if they broke a law but happen to be on one side or the other. The leader of PP actually spoke out immediately against someone in his group who attacked somebody–he said it was wrong and that they need to take responsibility for their own wrong actions.

You seem to be holding onto some pretty contradictory notions. PP is not a coherent group on the one hand. PP is a hate group on the other. Which is it? Do you have evidence of specific examples of hate the group has expressed that shows that they deserve to be beaten with a baseball back when they walk past your house, DD? Are you assuming Antifa is comprised of gay people–LOL?

Have you researched any of this? I don’t get the sense you know what you are talking about at all but you sound like you are pretty quick with your stick.

Where do the people in PP, who also appear in that video reside?

There are so many different ways they could have addressed this. They could have passed a resolution banning the flying of a political party flags, religious flags and National Flags other than the Stars and Stripes and . If some one wants a Gadsen flag say, no problem. I flew one during the Peoples Bicentennial back in 76. Nazi flags, were the National flag of the 3rd Reich. I believe I pointed out to you then (if not sorry) that video’s are not qualified evidence of anything by itself. It is in the nature of hear say. That is why in any legitimate court of law what is shown on a video, must be corroborated by first hand eye witness testimony–precisely because you can not see what is happening out of the field of view of the camera. I misread you when you said “I would have given it to them too”??? I was supposed to interpret that line as you would have given them a non violent confrontation that happens to involve an illegal brandishing of a weapon??? What?

You brandish a weapon when you BELIEVE someone is doing something illegal in front of your house? Ok. That is likely illegal as you are not law enforcement. If I was your neighbor and I saw you doing that likely illegal act what should I do? Following your own rules of engagement would force me to brandish a weapon and confront you while brandishing a weapon.

Back to reality: You say PP is illegally concealing weapons. Ok. How do the Antifa at Cider Riot know they are illegally concealing weapons if they are concealed? Carrying a baton unconcealed is not illegal in Oregon. Antifa did not object to the legality or illegality of anything that PP was doing. They objected to their physical presence “on THEIR streets”.

Aloha FF, you clearly have no conception or understanding of the neighborhood that I live in. S. Summit was the most police response point for decades. The cops murdered one of my neighbors (two houses away) in error (cost the city 1 million for the widow and child). Drug dealers murdered one of the employees in Brandies parking lot(probably an extortion attempt) three doors down on the other side of my house. Some kids (they were 16 and had been my neighbors when they were 9 or 10) from the projects around the corner from my house ripped off the drug dealer at Brandies and they ended up in a gun fight in my drive way. I had a motorcyle gang living in the house across the street from me. The owners of Brandies beat the hell out of one of them who had attempted to extort protection money, the gang moved. We just had another murder out in front of the party store last June. All the while having to deal with a criminal gangster slumlord living two doors down the street (only person I have heard of imprisoned for malicious polluting of water ways). I’ve had to deal with squatters, drug dealers, pimps, addicts, crack whores, and lots and lots of poor folks all with slow and inadequate police response times. When I see a pimp beating his whore out in front of my house on a Sunday morning, I’m going to do the right thing. What would you do call the cops, who might show up in 20 min. half hour. After 35 years and the slumlord being imprisoned and his property being stripped from him, the neighborhood is beginning to change, but as the murder in June demonstrated, guns, young men with no futures are a very bad combination.

    DD,

I have spent decades living in far more dangerous places than Summit Street in Ypsilanti. Who cares?

What does your neighborhood have to do with Patriot Prayer and Portland.

Keep talking. What you say is interesting. You are the one who was drawing parallels to Anitfa and yourself. If you are like Antifa then the guys named Patriot Prayer who wanted to walk down a city sidewalk without being harassed are parallel to murdering drug dealers and pimps. Don’t change the subject. I don’t object to you rescuing a prostitute in a moment of immediate distress. If you are drawing parallels then I am just wondering who in your mind was Antifa rescuing from immediate distress in front of the bar where they told PP they were not allowed to walk?

Aloha FF, I would love to hear stories about those places you lived. Would find it very interesting in understanding how living there framed your life. I have told you what I think about people walking down the street looking for a fight–Who do you prefer the Jets or the Sharks? I don’t change the subject I deal with your concerns head on, while you seem to just want to wonder around in circles. I am getting dizzy. Happens some times when your head moves to fast when your old.

FF is highly interesting and a welcome respite from many of the others who post on this site. He calls out many who make claims without any evidence to support and challenges their mistakes. DD doesn’t bother to do a simple google search when presented with novel ideas. Just expresses skepticism of well known facts.

Aloha EOS, Now that I know you are a chemist I have a renewed respect for you. I do know how to google, but given the algorithms they use I do some times question the results. In any event I have confidence that your commitment to the scientific method and the pursuit of knowledge will ultimately cause you to change your perspective. You being a scientist I understand your conservatism and skepticism. I encourage you to help in this pursuit of knowledge, it is way beyond my expertise.

Aloha, Just came across this little item, seems to be connected to this Portland thread. Do you suppose I should just google the Mussolini quote to confirm its accuracy, or the imagery contained at the end of the Trump campaign video to determine its origins. Should I believe the information that the poster presented? The Trump video seems legit, the post from 2016 seem legit. Oh if I only knew what was true (please see my comments on the press, attribution and credibility.

    DD,

I am not a chemist. Scientists change their understanding when the evidence provided supports it, not based on a survey of their colleagues. Most climate change supporters always cite that a large number of scientists agree that irreversible climate change is caused by human activity. This is inconsequential without a presentation of the data that irrefutably proves their hypothesis.

There was another individual in years past that wrote about living near Summit and Mich. You must be neighbors…..

Aloha EOS, The banks foreclosed on him and he lost his house during the last depression. Sorry I guess I misunderstood an interaction you had with JH. You do know and understand the scientific method, right? Here is a sight to a scientist utube channel. He spends most of his time presenting the latest in Climate Change Science papers. I posted one recently on “global browning” did you bother to check it out? I thought he was quit skeptical about the results of the study, and acknowledged the need for more inquiry. He has dozens of videos explaining how climate science is advancing. Almost every day he is presenting new information. I like also that he shares the links to those things he is discussing so you can engage in your own inquiry. You might do well to check it out. You could actually see and analysis the data you so desperately want to see.

    DD,

You characterize PP as looking for a fight?

There is a difference between looking for a fight and expecting a fight isn’t there?

How does your characterization square with the way Antifa confronted PP just prior to PP stepping foot on the same block as Cider Riot Bar?

How does your characterization square with the way that the Antifa fighter was treated after he won a fair one-on-one, pre-agreed upon fight against the PP fighter? Hint: PP and the PP fighter lost and shook hands with the very good antifa fighter and they said to the Antifa fighter “very honorable”? Did you catch any of that?

How does your characterization of PP’s supposed intent square with the fact that when one of the members of PP stepped out of line and punched a girl unnecessarily the leader of PP instantly condemned him and said he takes responsibility for wrongly punching the girl unnecessarily? Did you catch any of that?

You miss a lot of details, my friend. I am not at all convinced you understand the dynamics at play in Portland.

To Sad: It is kind of boring for me too. Do you think I enjoy watching these videos that much? Most of the people here are wildly irresponsible with their truth claims. MM.com used to be a safe-space for lies. That time has past. It is tedious demonstrating to the intentionally obtuse people around here that they are obviously wrong about so much. I do it not because I think it is fun or think it interesting but because the Truth matters.

Aloha FF, Have you ever watched “West Side Story”, asked you that once before but you just ignored my question,
“How does your characterization square with the way that the Antifa fighter was treated after he won a fair one-on-one, pre-agreed upon fight against the PP fighter?”
Sounds like they pulled this straight from the screen play. I always thought the Jet’s song was the best, but the Sharks seemed to get all the really pretty girls (except for Natalie Wood, how can you not fall in love with her–her singing “Maria, Maria” in the bridal shop,a classic scene).

Personally I think most people’s lives, under late stage capitalism where everything has been comodified, has become devoid of real meaning, thus the need to create “Drama” in their lives. I thought listening to the PP’s folks conversation as they wandered around Portland looking for the Jets to fight was far more enlightening about their motivations than any professed ideological purpose.
But once again I feel like we are beginning to head in yet another circle.

HWs complete lack of empathy for the people and children of PDX is telling. He is the Patriot Prayer of Mark Maynard. Existing only to agitate, contributing nothing of use to society, leaving it poorer and empty like his hollowed out soulless self. So outcast from society that he eagerly seeks negative attention as his only validation. Trying to bringing everyone down to his level, lying about lies.

    Sorry DD.

No, I have only scene a few bits of West Side Story.

Freedom of movement and freedom of speech are pretty fundamental. When fundamental rights are denied or challenged you are going to get “drama” from any good American and rightfully so. I do think there are a lot very lost people on the Antifa side. I also think there are a lot of lost people on mm.com. Pretending to be on the side of good against those evil other people is how they trick themselves into believing their lives have meaning.
