Kirk Douglas, Hollywood’s biggest son-of-a-bitch, is dead at 103

One of my favorite actors, the great Kirk Douglas, died today at the age of 103. If you’re stuck at home tomorrow, due to the snow, do yourself a favor and watch him in Billy Wilder’s brilliant film Ace in the Hole. It’s really an amazing piece of work, and more timely now than ever. You won’t regret it. I promise… Here’s a taste.

Here’s the trailer, for those of you who need to know a little more before buying the ticket and taking the ride.

Have you seen Sweet Smell of Success? He was willing to go places that others weren’t.

Thanks for sharing the clip, Mark. I’ll be watching Ace in the Hole again sometime over the next few days per your recommendation. I vaguely recall the scene from having seen it as a child.

I’m distantly related to Kirk Douglas, so losing him has some personal meaning.

Kirk Douglas (once bedded a woman he knew to be an anti-Semite, just so he could shout, at the climactic moment: “I’m a Jew! You are being f—-d by a Jew!” according to his kiss-and-tell 1988 autobiography “The Ragman’s Son.”) – From PageSix.com

“…before he was Kirk Douglas, he was Issur Danielovitch — the son of dirt-poor Russian-Jewish immigrants born outside Albany in 1916.” – from PageSix.com

That story perfectly encapsulates the attitude of Kirk Douglas. I really thought he’d be around forever, as he was too damn ornery to die.

The word “bedded” is one I haven’t heard in a while. Good riddance. I still like Douglas, though.

In The Ragman’s Son, Douglas described himself as a “son of a bitch”, adding, “I’m probably the most disliked actor in Hollywood. And I feel pretty good about it. Because that’s me…. I was born aggressive, and I guess I’ll die aggressive.”

    Aloha, one of the best.
Path to Glory and Seven Days in May along with Spartacus seem very relevant today
