Saying President Trump “engaged in impeachable conduct,” Michigan’s Justin Amish becomes the first Republican member of Congress to call for the President’s removal from office

While five-term Congressman Justin Amash has long been a critic of Donald Trump’s, today is the first time, to my knowledge, that he’s gone so far as to say that the President should be forcefully removed from office. And, this tweet of his, I believe, makes him the first Republican in Congress to call for the President’s impeachment, demonstrating that even the worst of Republicans have it within their power to become heroes under the reign of Donald Trump.

As Amash, who has described himself in the past as being “the only libertarian in Congress”, has been hinting over the past several weeks about running against Trump in 2020 as an Independent, I suspect this is a calculated move on his part — an attempt to test the waters, and see how much national support he might have, if he should decide to jump into the race — but, none-the-less, even if it is a self-serving move on Amash’s part, it’s an interesting development. [I suspect it was timed to dominate the Sunday news shows.] While I doubt we’ll see any other Republicans in Congress standing up with him, and calling for impeachment, I do think this will get a lot of press, and, hopefully, it encourages a few non-elected, independent conservatives to show some backbone and come out publicly as being pro-impeachment as well.

Here, for those of you who might be interested, are Amash’s subsequent tweets that followed the one above.

For what it’s worth, I’d love to see an ideological, Ayn Rand-worshiping Tea Party Libertarian like Amash in the general election, pealing votes away from Donald Trump, so I’m all for him throwing his hat into the ring. I don’t agree with him on policy, but I respect his contempt for Donald Trump, and wish more Republicans had the courage to stand up to the President and the MAGA cultists who form his base.

Oh, and I do love that Amash refers to himself as “the only libertarian in Congress”, which is clearly a slap in the face of Rand Paul, who really does deserve to be slapped in the face [and knocked from his riding lawnmower] more often. [Amash came to Congress in the big Tea Party wave of 2010, and was a founding member of the so-called Freedom Caucus, which, over time, has moved away from its founding principles to fully embrace Donald Trump.]

update: Well, it looks like someone told The Donald.

update: Well, it looks like this move of Amash’s just got him a primary challenger in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District.

It amazes me how FF can remain so smug in support of a man who behaves as Trump does in the tweet above etc etc etc ad infinitum. It really must be a trick to twist one’s thinking so far to the right that one only sees error and inconsistency on one side. I often wonder what he’s doing here. I know many conservatives and even Trump supporters whose viewpoints are far more reasonable than those expressed here. And the rest of us are so far to the left, he can’t even register our points of view. FF presents himself as more moderate than any of us really, but it’s a false front. He has erected a tone of moderation as protection for a mind that is totally bound in fealty to conservativism. So much so that he would sacrifice the core democratic principles we all believe them (or twist them to protect a wannabe strongman). The lecturing attempts to direct the discourse, and general paternalism is familiar to any of us in targeted groups. It presents itself as reason, but what it is really is an emotional defense of his cognitive bias and the privileges it preserves.

Amash, with whom I agree on just about nothing, at least has his own mind.

By the way, the President is understating the seriousness of the crime of treason. Long sentences are the least the treasonous ones could possibly suffer. You can keep lying to yourself and everyone else that they were “just” looking into Russian interference but the declassified documents will prove that false to everyone.

Washington Post: “Why Trump should be worried about Justin Amash”

“It turns out a lot of them were not in favor of limiting the size of government, they were just opposed to the president at the time,” said Amash, who helped found the tea party-aligned House Freedom Caucus. “The tea party is largely gone. It was replaced with nationalism and protectionism and the general philosophy of the party now under Trump.”

Amash has also departed from his party on some big issues, including Trump’s border wall national emergency, his travel ban and even Trump’s nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

It’s highly unlikely, of course, that Amash would be able to win the presidency; the highest share the Libertarian Party has ever received in a presidential election is the 3 percent that Gary Johnson got in 2016. But the party that year had ballot access in all 50 states. Assuming it gets that again, Amash would have a real chance to expand upon Johnson’s vote share. And whatever you thought of Johnson’s policies, he was not that compelling a candidate; Amash, by contrast, is widely regarded as a smart and principled lawmaker. It’s not difficult to see him doing better than Johnson.

As with Howard Schultz, the question would be whether Amash would get many votes and whom they might otherwise have gone to — Trump or his Democratic challenger. But Amash is a slightly different case. You’ll note that his state was one of the surprise states that Trump carried by less than 1 percentage point on the way to his 2016 victory. It’s also a state that has not shared in the broader country’s economic gains. A January poll showed Trump with a 37.5 percent approval rating and trailing several Democrats in the state by as much as double digits. Trump was also disapproved by 17 percent of Republicans — about double where that rate has been in national polling.

There is evidence that home states tend to be better for third-party candidates. New Mexico, where Johnson served as a Republican governor, gave him 9 percent in 2016, while Utah gave Evan McMullin 21 percent. Texas was one of Ross Perot’s better states when he ran in 1992 and 1996, as was Minnesota when Sen. Eugene McCarthy (D-Minn.) waged a quixotic 1976 independent bid. By contrast, 1980 independent candidate John Anderson, who like Amash served as a Republican congressman, did only slightly better in his home state of Illinois as he did nationwide.

Even if Amash didn’t take much of the vote nationwide, if he overperformed in his home state, he could be depriving Trump of its 16 electoral votes, which would be a significant strike against Trump winning reelection. And it’s not difficult to see Amash’s more tea-party-oriented politics appealing to the limited number of disaffected Republicans in other states as well. Trump has pretty unified support in today’s GOP, but there are also signs that it’s somewhat soft. And given that as much as 56 percent of the country says they won’t vote for Trump, Trump cannot afford to have many would-be Republican voters peeled off by a third-party candidate.

Mark is referring to an incident where Paul was assaulted from behind by a neighbor while he was doing lawn work. The assault resulted in the cracking of 6 of Paul’s ribs and it bruised Paul’s lung. The assault was determined to not be politically motivated but rather arose out of some sort of neighborly dispute over an unsightly brush pile. Unless Mark is also offended by Paul’s lawn care practices it sounds like we might add Mark’s comment to the list of times someone in this community has threatened/ wished for violence upon someone based upon their political views.

Also, it is great that Amash concluded something after a careful reading of the report but lets not pretend like Amash is turning against Trump because of the report. Amash has been against Trump all along and even was proposing impeachment last year. Mark knows this. Mark wrote about Amash’s wishes for impeachment last year.

Of course congress can impeach. The threshold is very low–as it is a threshold outside of legalistic standards. The notion put forth that partisan politics is the reason impeachment has not happened is laughable. The notion put forth, by Thrush, that a lot of Republican’s secretly hold the view that Amash holds is laughable too.

You guys do not deal in facts. You guys deal in innuendo and insinuation. Anonymous always misses the point and fails to understand the dynamics at play.

Regarding wimps: Those who have had very real political power, without regard to the truth, over others, are starting to feel it erode away as their false narratives are exposed. Hillary losing was a trigger obviously, and it keeps getting worse for them as they fail to self reflect and fail to reflect on the truthfulness of their narrative. They still feel entitled to that power without regard to the truth and without any respect for democracy. They are increasingly insinuating physical violence against others who shine a light on their often false-narratives.

I am quite certain many people in this community are capable of some very destructive shit against the people who question their narratives. Real world destruction against the less politically connected. This capacity for destruction is not a strength or a sign of courage. I recognize the capacity for destruction without regard to the Truth or Justice as a fact of this community that needs to be navigated around. Call it cowardice if you want. I see it as a reasonable distrust of the many people that present themselves as being on the side of goodness and truth, but, good intentions as they might have, are actually often found on the side of evil and lies.

So tell me Mr Anonymous: Why should we hope for people like Rand Paul to be tackled from behind, have 6 ribs broken, and end up in the hospital with a bruised lung?

“Meanwhile, on the other side of the looking glass, Donald Trump is accusing FBI officials of “treason” (which is punishable by death), for their investigation into Russia’s interference into our 2016 election.”–Mark

The interplay between Treason vs. Obstruction is a completely normal way to analyze the dynamics at play. There is no one-sided looking glass moment here, as Mark’s comment suggests. Whereas, “no obstruction” does not necessarily follow from “no collusion”, the perceptions of treasonous activities is necessarily going to be a part of the equation. Likewise an actual analysis of the basis for the investigation, and the legality of the steps taken (by both sides), is necessarily going to be a part of the equation upon which we might be able to form a meaningful judgment.

Wanting to form a judgment while bracketing or ignoring these elements is announcing you love sticking to the narrative that has been handed to you (by people who want to control you) more than you love finding the truth.

HW, welcome back from your coma, like since the 80s? You are right. There is absolutely nothing going on with gun proliferation since then. Right wing militias loved Obama. Forget about it.

Mueller muddied it up about as good as he could I guess. The President is the only one protected from prosecution and no Americans were indicted for conspiring with Russia. I’d think if there was any conspiracy he would have got SOMEONE. Mueller closed the book on ever talking about anything outside the report. Now with the total declassification and delivery to Barr the truth comes about about how it all started and it won’t be good for deep staters.

Aloha HW, ah yes the secret indictments. I guess you are also all on board to end the 1st. Amendment too. Can’t wait for more prosecutions under the Espionage Act. And of course more declarations of National Emergencies to avoid Congress. All on board the Yemeni genocide express.
As Tulsi says, Trump is the Saudi’s bitch.

Pay attention and you will start to get it. Before indictments comes spygate declassification and that is here now. No fallout yet but it is coming.

Assange will be fine. He is one of the patriots’ star witnesses. How do you inject truth into public consciousness LEGALLY?

South Bend has 100k people. Every other candidate has a heavier lift in terms of responsibility. Once again Mayor Pete gets credit beyond his due. Ah Millennials… Gold stars for everyone under 40! They are all exceptional!

If Trump is Saudi Arabia’s bitch how come their entire old corrupt guard got fucked up on his watch? Al-Waleed bin Talal owned Barak Obama and he got the smackdown for corruption. Dude chose Obama’s cabinet. “Barry, you must pick who you want but this is who I want you to want. I’m sure you will see the wisdom in choosing these individuals for the different positions of your cabinet. We have always been there for you and now it is time for you to be there for us…”

HW simple question, Do you support Trumps veto of the wars power resolution calling for the end of US support of the Saudi war in Yemen?

I don’t have enough knowledge about the situation in Yemen to say. Do you think it would be better for Yemen to let Iran have their way with them?

Aloha HW, Plenty of information about the Saudi genocide in Yemen available. You pride your self on your ability to find out shit. What’s up? You think you are against the deep state, but you swallow their propaganda hook line and sinker. All you seem to know how to do is Follow the Leader. A leader who is nothing but a bitch for the Saudi Royals, you truly are pathetic. A simple question and you are clueless, truly pathetic.
I notice EOS disappeared as soon as s/he had to confront the glorious leader’s genocide in Yemen and how that works with her/him pro-life agenda.

It’s pathetic to admit to not knowing something? That’s funny because you don’t know shit but you don’t admit it at all. Don’t be a piece of shit.

Aloha HW, so have you investigated the Yemeni genocide? Of course there is also the question of where you stand on an Imperial Presidency. We are engaged in supporting a ruthless autocratic regime engage in “siege” warfare, now on nearly 4 years, and you do not have an opinion. I thought you were the WARLORD. You have said countless times how you know shit the rest of us are clueless about. Congress, the Supreme legislature of our country passes a law ending our involvement in a genocidal war, and your Leader vetoes it and you don’t have an opinion. You are as bad as any Democrat who could only follow Russiagate. You follow the Leader without a clue of what his policies are. I pity you. As I pity our country.
But I’m just a dolt so who cares.

Aloha, Just heard Jimmy Dore explain our world. Change on the outside, continuity on the inside. Obama continues Buchs’s wars (didn’t we think Obama was anti-war? Nobel Peace Price and all). Trump continues the wars. Throughout all of them the Imperial Presidency becomes ever more apparent. Congress says end the war in Yemen, Trump vetoes it. I thought Congress determined war. oh well. Who cares? I’m just a dolt and thought this stuff was important–guess not.
Thought the 1st. Amendment was important. But I’m just a dolt, lock up Assange he does not count (yeah right HW, you know about as much about this as you know about Yemen, just keep following your Leader)
It is so much nicer reading and talking about Tadpoles.

I never claimed to know everything. Shut the fuck up dude. You don’t think Iran is a deep state tool to fuck everything up? Why did Obama give them all that money? The President is fighting the CIA who fucked up Iran all those decades ago. You are very far from understanding a whole lot. The fact that you understand 9-11 was a false flag is evidence that even an idiot can understand that.

    https://www.usaid.gov/news-information/press-releases/feb-26-2019-us-announces-additional-humanitarian-assistance-people-yemen

Today, the United States announced nearly $24 million in additional emergency aid to the people of Yemen, who face the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. This funding brings the total humanitarian assistance provided by the U.S. Government for the Yemen response to nearly $721 million since October 2017.

You are so fucking dumb. I already told you Assange will be fine. It is part of the plan, dickhead. He will be exonerated with his own evidence and Clinton, etc. will fall. You doubt me or you are just that ignorant that you actually don’t read what I write and still say all that shit?
