There was stuff that I wanted to write about tonight, but I’ve decided to watch Lifeboat instead

If you’d like to join me, you can rent 1944’s Lifeboat on Amazon for $3.99. If, however, you’re not a Hitchcok fan, you can feel free to use this as an open thread, and just leave a comment about whatever it is that you want to talk about, from today’s arrest of Republican Congressman Chris Collins to the-still-too-close-to-call race for Ohio’s 12th Congressional District. Or, if you want, you can just trade recipes, use the site like a dating app, or talk about the weather. I seriously don’t care. Just write about whatever you want. You can even post complaints.

You can check it out for free at the AADL and prevent Bezos from blasting your 3.99 into space on a rocket. Great movie. As a kid I immediately thought why don’t they just kill and eat that conniving negative jerk?

    from Newsweek:

“With more than 5,000 absentee ballots and more than 3,400 provisional ballots yet to be counted, it could be weeks until an official winner is declared. Ohio state law does not allow the ballots to be counted until 11 days after the election, which is August 18. If the vote count comes within 0.5 percent, an automatic recount will take place.

No matter who emerges as the winner of Tuesday’s special election, both O’Connor and Balderson will again face off during the midterm elections in November.”

Today in corruption: Trump’s first congressional endorser, Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) was arrested for insider trading. I had asked Trump’s HHS nominee, Tom Price, about the insider deal he got on the same stock during his confirmation hearing. More here: https://twitter.com/alfranken/status/1027396801337405441?s=21

Dandelions? It’s multi-functional as it is nutritious, can be used to make wine, and proves so much color in our landscapes.

I watched Lifeboat a bunch when I was a kid. I probably haven seen it in almost 30 years and would love to see it again. Isn’t it Bendix’s character that becomes a problem? Drinking sea water?

You might be able to get it from the AADL, but you can’t get it from the Ypsi Public Library, at least not right now, as Mark has their copy checked out.

Why did people vote for Shri Tandehar? What was appealing about his candidacy? Did his presence impact the outcome? Should Democrats have come out against his candidacy earlier?

How can we as Democrats prevent future Tandehars from subverting other candidates?

I think these questions need to be asked.

I have not seen Lifeboat, though I have seen other boat movies, including Pirates of the Caribbean and will see the new movie “the Meg.”

Kim— As much as I like EOS answer (serious), I’m a fan of milkweed, there are several varieties native to MI. Many of the most hearty natives are tall prairie flowers, lots blooming now. Joe Pie weed, helianthus. The shorter perennials are black eyed Susan, yarrow, bee balm, Mullen. You can buy native trees from the county very cheaply. Possibly native plants too. (Can’t remember). You can start collecting seeds in open meadows now and through fall. Native grasses are nice too. For low growing areas I like wild strawberries.

EOS— I grew up digging dandelion shoots on maudy Thursday as eating them (with hot bacon dressing) was believed to ward off illness the following year. It turns out that superstition has some merit as dandelion greens have lots of vital nutrients often missing from PA Dutch winter diet featuring lots of cabbage as the only ‘green.’

Re dating, I’m looking for a mostly straight man who is within range of my age with intelligence and a sense of joy who can swing a hammer. I don’t care much about looks or income. Not interested in long term or fly by night. I believe relationships require personal commitment no matter how they are defined. I believe it’s natural for the definition of relationships to change. My commitment is to the relationship not the definition. A sense of human decency is required— though rare it seems. I don’t talk politics in real life. I work a lot and have kids, pets and friends and other commitments. I’m generous. I can cook but hate doing dishes. I’m always broke but not in debt. I like to steer my own ship. My son wants me to get a boyfriend with a boat.

That is only half serious. It’s honest and impossible it seems. Too much to expect. Dating as an older woman is pretty terrible. It’s a performance one can see through too easily to enjoy. I want a fundamental level of honesty that’s entirely missing. The accepted standard of behavior is atrocious. I may just be stubborn. Or have unreasonable standards.

No doubt snark will follow this comment. Why would one expect anything different? Lay of the land. I mean how dare a woman over 50 have requirements, right? We are expected to be either desperate or frigid. Not sure why I’m writing this now. Or here. Just been thinking about it lately. How messed up it all is.

I have never heard of Lifeboat. I’ll watch tonight.

Re: ” how dare a woman over 50 have requirements”

I pissed off one guy who was all like, “you shouldn’t be so picky, you don’t have anyone else wanting to date you”

I just smiled and said, “Yeah, all you had to do was improve upon my being alone and you didn’t. buh bye”. Of course that IS the problem these days. I generally prefer my own company to theirs and have absolutely zero tolerance for someone who doesn’t meet my standards which I don’t see as excessively high. I just want someone I enjoy being around more than I enjoy being by myself. *shrug*.

So these days, I don’t even want to do the whole weird dating thing. It feels like a chore with an end result that isn’t worth the effort.

Yep. When we were young we could be virgins or whores. We age into frigid and desperate. At no point in my existence has the cultural idea of who I was matched up with who I felt myself to be. (I don’t think that’s particularly unusual. ) And I’ve had most of the standard ‘female’ rite of passage experiences. Except prom.

    But let’s talk about noodles.

Lynne— when women complain to me about their husbands (which is often) and start talking divorce etc, I always tell them that there is no fantasy replacement waiting in the wings. .The only reason to leave is when being with them is worse than being alone. Comparable to your criteria. Sometimes I wonder if I’m being too picky, then I go on a date and realize I’m not being picky enough. Sigh.

Most men are intolerable, especially once they’re old enough to be set in their ways.

I think any single women 40 or older looking to find a good man should target widowers. Your best odds of finding a decent man are there. Just check in to the cause of death. Accidental drowning, poisoning, electrocution, or falls down stairs are red flags.

War of the Worlds was real, but covered up by the Illuminati as mere radio fiction. Trump is the only president who has been bold enough to acknowledge this, as he is revealing through Q the deep state secrets that the Rothchilds have been suppressing. Soon the Templar Order will be overthrown and the Holy Grail given to the Chosen few thoroughbreds to protect them against the rapture.
