Two extremely significant events happened on this day in history – August 16… Elvis Presley was found dead in his Graceland bathroom, clutching the book A Scientific Search For The Face of Jesus, and the Ramones took the stage for the very first time at CBGBs, ushering in a new era in American music. While taking place on the same day, these two events did not, however, take place the same year. And I’m curious to find out if people know which came first… or, just maybe, which caused the other to happen. Did the Ramones’ historic first show at CBGB happen on the anniversary of Elvis’s death, or did Elvis die on the anniversary of that first Ramones’ show?
Which happened first, the death of Elvis or the Ramones’ first show at CBGB?

Elvis had to die before the Ramones could exist.
Elvis was like Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Elvis died in ’77. The Ramones had already been around by then. They played England in ’76.
In a perfectly poetic world, Elvis would have passed just as the Ramones took the stage.
Elvis died in 77. The Ramones played CBGB in 74 for the first time. I know everything.
It was also the day music ended. On this day in 1986 “Papa Don’t Preach” reached #1.
August 16 is also Al Hibbler’s birthday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdAU2vSkLXY
Elvis died my last day of a summer camp I hated. ’77. Ramones hit it big in ’78/’79 but were around forever before that. http://s36.photobucket.com/user/ajflan/media/75279_10150817340884276_96711894275_11635374_1557898434_n.jpg.html
Kinda like Leather Tuscadero…
It’s an interesting question. I think that most people probably think that the Ramones started later than 1974 and that Elvis died earlier than 1977. This is total conjecture o my part, but my guess it that most people would say 1976 if asked when either of these events took place.
Elvis coulda destroyed Rock & Roll High School. That woulda been cool.
The Ramones were playing a show in Minneapolis the night Elvis died. I heard the news when Joey stopped the show to announce the King’s death. And then the Ramones did an Elvis medley. No shit.
The night Elvis died the Ramones played at The Rathskeller in Boston
