State Rep. Dave Rutledge takes your calls, monster songs with Fangs and Twang, and a Totally Awesome Fest recap… on this weekend’s edition of The Saturday Six Pack

In the wake of yesterday’s positive coverage in Concentrate, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing. Strip club owners from around the country have been calling, asking how they too can get on the microwatt AM bandwagon. One would have thought that operating a strip club would bring in enough money to pay the bills, but apparently diversification is the new buzzword in the industry. So, AM 1700 station owner Brian Robb and I have been on the phone around the clock, telling the managers of all-nude dance clubs how they too can expand beyond lap dances, into the world of hyper-local AM. “There’s no money in it,” Brian tells them, “but occasionally someone will bring you a beer.” And, if they still aren’t sold on the idea at that point, I mention the fact that someone once brought a raw piece of deer meat and cooked it outside the studio for us, and that usually does the trick. So, if you live near a strip club, keep your eyes open. In the very near future, you may start to see tiny, low-power antennas and Saturday Six Pack franchises popping up… Here, by the way, is a photo of our station, taken by the great photographer Doug Coombe, which shows the parasitic relationship we have with the all-nude dance club next-door, where they’re apparently running reruns of old football games for those regulars who have grown weary of female genitalia.

In spite of all this recent activity, though, we’ve still found time to put together one hell of a show for this Saturday night. We’ll kick the program off at 6:00 with State Representative David Rutledge, who will be taking calls on everything from the condition of our roads to funding for public education. And, then, non-motorize transportation advocate Bob Krzewinski will drop by to tell us about Bike Bus Walk Week, which kicks off on May 10. And, after that, we’ll be joined by Totally Awesome Fest organizers Patrick Elkins and Amber Fellows, who will be sharing some of their favorite moments from the recent festival, as well as addressing any complaints folks might have. And, of course, we’ll have a new song from Dr. Peter Larson in Kenya, and another segment of The People’s History of Ypsilanti with Matt Siegfried. [This time, we’ll be talking about the 1830s in Ypsilanti.] Oh, and we’ll close the show with Cre Fuller, who will be buying the leftovers of people walking down North Washington Street, as we discuss the closing of SPUR studios. [If you have leftovers that you’d like to see Cre, drop by at 8:10 PM.] Oh, and our musical guest will be the mystical country band Fangs and Twang, who won’t just be playing a set, and submitting to an interview, but performing an opening theme for The Saturday Six Pack, which they tell me is incredible.
