Store for a Month

I don’t think it was an original idea. I must have heard it somewhere before. But, for the longest time now, I’ve been thinking that it would be neat to open a store here in Ypsi, in one of the otherwise unused downtown buildings, for a single day. The idea would be that it would pop up out of nowhere, like a dandelion, and then disappear as suddenly as it had appeared.

I didn’t give much thought as to what would be sold in my 24-hour store. I just imagined having a big opening party, complete with bands and a ribbon cutting, followed several hours later by a going-out-of-business sale. I had vague ideas about t-shirts and paintings that I could peddle, but I never really devoted the time to fleshing the idea out.

Well, while I was sitting on my hands, doing nothing with the idea, someone in Portland came along and did it better. Or, at least, they’re about to. My friend Chloe in Portland, who owns the small press emporium Reading Frenzy, just told me about a venture launched by an artist there named John Brodie. It seems as though he’s launching a store that will exist for one month only. And here’s the cool part… He’s gotten 60 artists from the pacific northwest to create products that will only be available there, in the store. Here’s a clip from the website for Store for a Month:

Loosely based on Claes Oldenburg’s “Store” from 1961, Store for a Month will be a temporary art object and “product” store that includes a working studio for the Proprietor and Store artists to make works on-site, although many works will be made in advance. Store for a Month will feature art and products made specifically for the project by over 60 of the NW region’s best and brightest artists. While the emphasis is on 3D art objects and sculpture, some 2D work will be included. Artists have been encouraged to make works they might not usually make, explore new mediums outside their traditional process, and create works of an unusual or outrageous nature – all priced for the “Store” environment.

Location: 1216 SE Division Street, Portland Oregon
Store Hours: Wednesday through Saturday, Noon – 7pm

The store opens June 3… If you’re in Portland, check it out, and send photos. I’d appreciate it.

Spring in Ypsilanti

I was just sent this image by NPR’s Mike Perini. If he’s to be believed, he stumbled across this record in a Council Bluffs, Iowa record store called Kanesville Kollectibles last weekend. He describes it as, “countryish late 60s pop with a mild psychedelic influence,” and threatens to play it on his immensely entertaining WCBN radio show, Pandora’s Lunchbox, tomorrow evening.

Ambitious church initiatives in Ypsilanti

Last night, at the request of a reader, I started a thread on Ypsi churches. Among the comments which followed the post, was one from a woman identifying herself as an Ypsilanti minister. In it, she mentioned two ambitious endeavors being undertaken by Ypsi churches. I’ve asked for more information, but, here, in the meantime, is the section of her comment which I found of interest.

…First let me say, that the American church is changing. I can say there are little pockets of people who take being a believer seriously, and who want to love ALL people! The church is coming out of an age of legalism, judgment, and moving away from past hurts. Great things are happening in the Ypsilanti area in regards to the church. For instance did you know that there is a plan to build a church that will house, feed, and educate the homeless in our area? There are also plans to build a working farm, which will teach and train ex-prisoners renewable and sustainable living….

If anyone out there has any additional information on either of these projects, I’d love to know more.

From the crawl spaces above the Deja Vu

From Monday’s Ann Arbor News:

Police talk man down after he climbs into the rafters at Ypsilanti strip club
by Art Aisner | The Ann Arbor News

A man who wanted to get a better view of the action at an Ypsilanti strip club was arrested after police talked him down from the ceiling early Sunday, reports said.

Ypsilanti police were called to a possible fight at Deja Vu, 31 N. Washington St., shortly after midnight. Club security said no fight occurred, but a man climbed into the rafters and refused to come down.

Police located the 24-year-old man in the drop ceiling and arrested him.

The man told police he “just wanted to climb,” reports said. He was not injured, and it’s unclear whether any damage occurred.

As the “entertainers” at the Déjà Vu are totally nude, and as I’m told that you can position yourself just inches away from their naughty bits, it’s hard to imagine what this fellow thought he’d get a better view of by climbing through the ceiling tiles. I suspect it’s possible that he’s got a thing for the tops of women’s heads. I remember, when I was young, seeing an episode of Love American Style in which a man dating a nude model was obsessed with seeing her hands, which she always wore gloves on. I don’t suppose it’s beyond the realm of possibility that a regular of Déjà Vu, after years of intense gynecological overexposure, might want to try something new… Humans, if you didn’t already know, are ridiculous little animals.

And, on a side note, I’m not sure who, if anyone, will cover such stories once the Ann Arbor News officially closes up shop next month.
