you got your violence in my self-pity

The new issue of the Eastern Michigan University student magazine, “emYOU,” has an article on the upcoming Shadow Art Fair. I have a few issues with the story, that I won’t bore you with, but, in the defense of the writer, the following quote really was something that I said.

“The overall vibe is one of extreme violence and self-pity,” Maynard said.

I thought it was incredibly funny at the time. I didn’t, of course, expect the reporter to pass it along to his readers, absent any kind of explanation. I’m incredibly happy about it, though… I hope the phrase shows up in all the press we get from now on… And, along those same lines, I hope the Ann Arbor NPR affiliate runs the part of my interview where I say that several visitors will be forced to fight for their lives at the upcoming Shadow Art Fair.

Those of you craving death, extreme violence and self-pity, please mark Saturday, July 19 on your calendars… The Shadow Art Fair is real, and it’s coming for your non-douchey children!

[The poster for this summer’s Shadow Art Fair, pictured here to the right, was designed by a local vandal known as White Ryan.]

From the dark, hidden corners of Ypsilanti comes the appropriately named Shadow Art Fair, where local and national artists crawl out from under their paint soaked and clay crusted dwellings for one day… I’d only add, “to prey on surface dwellers who wander the corral offering little resistance.”

That’s pretty much how I’ve always pictured artists, as well.

My favorite quote from that issue happens to non-SAF related:

“The real estate bug bit Beal with the force of a thousand hippos when he bought his first five-unit Ypsilanti property.”

Bull market? Bear market? Ypsi’s got hippos. And they’re HUNGRY . . .

I don’t know about being bit by five hippos, but I have footage of what it’s like to be attacked by four:

    “extreme violence and self pity”…

Sounds like a subliminal Severed Unicorn Head advertising campaign.

There’s supposed to be an interview with me and Jennifer Albaum, one of the other founders of the SAF, on the Ann Arbor NPR affiliate tomorrow… I don’t know that it will make it into the final piece, but at some point the woman conducting the interview asked us to imagine what a fight between the SAF and the Ann Arbor Art Fairs would look like.

SAF would win in a tussle with the AA AF because SAF has more practice severing heads.
