now you too can spend a night in paris

I just learned from my friend Sidharth that a Paris Hilton-themed nightclub, called Club Paris, is getting ready to open in Orlando. Then, after poking around for a few minutes, I realized that the place is associated with Clear Channel Communications. (Clear Channel is listed as an “event partner,” but I suspect the relationship might grow as Club Paris spreads like a cancer.) Actually, I’m sure the place will flop, but I was looking for a reason to start drinking anyway, so I’m taking it as a sign… Let’s just make a rule: When you come across a story that encompasses Paris Hilton, Florida, and Clear Channel, you get to drop whatever you’re doing and start drinking. Agreed?

caliblog goes springer and disappoints me in the process

A year ago, a young Crimewave reader by the name of Chuck, and his friends, headed off to Los Angeles in hopes of making their way into the film industry. And, at my suggestion, they started a blog so that we could all watch their progress. Now, almost a year later, I think it’s safe to say that the Caliblog project is a bust. Lawsuits and physical violence are being threatened. Websites have been hacked, stolen, and stolen back. In a nutshell, the whole thing’s a fucking mess, and it really makes me sad… OK, the following links should fill you in on the details.

First, here are my thoughts upon their setting out from Michigan.

After a few promising months, things then took a turn for the worse when Chuck opted out of the project without telling anyone, and headed back to Michigan, by way of Europe.

Here’s how his roommates reacted to his sneaking out.

After that, things seemed to go pretty smoothly, until Chuck, not being promptly paid for a car that he’d sold to Billy, hacked into Caliblog and took the site down.

Now, the Caliblog site is back up and running again, and they’re pissed at Chuck.

Chuck, meanwhile, has a new site of his own, called ChuckGuide, where he’s talking about his car, the threats that have been made against him, and everything else. (See the Dec 11 entry.) (UPDATE: Chuck has since removed this post.)

And that, my friends, is how a website implodes.

My hope is that they’re just doing this for publicity, but I suspect that’s not the case… Whatever’s going on, my hope is that they can somehow all get through it without filing suit, throwing punches or casting any more aspersions.

it’s all in the editing

I suspect it was done to keep the egotistical Mr. Trump in his place, but I found it interesting today that producer Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Apprentice) and the folks from NBC, when announcing their plans to develop a reality television show around Martha Stewart, upon her release from prison, didn’t quiet rumors that she might be taking Trump’s spot in the fake prime-time boardroom of The Apprentice. Not only didn’t they quiet the rumor, but, if I had to bet, I’d say they started it (probably to keep Donald from asking for more money going into the third season). Here’s a quote from the story:

Last May, when Burnett met with Stewart, they also discussed developing a prime-time series, according to trade paper accounts at that time. But yesterday Burnett and Zucker dodged questions as to whether they are discussing a prime-time role on NBC for Stewart, including the possibility that she would replace Donald Trump on NBC’s Thursday tent-pole, “The Apprentice,” the Associated Press reported.

As for the prospect of watching the “real” Martha in action, I only have one thing to say… I just hope that prison didn’t turn her into a cold, unfeeling bitch. That would be just horrible.

dust off your prayer mats

Not that anyone in the US fucking cares anymore, but Bush is removing a few more bricks from that nasty old wall that our founding fathers built between Church and State.

Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) — The Bush administration, saying that religion “has played a defining role” in the nation’s history, urged the U.S. Supreme Court to permit Ten Commandments displays in courthouses.

The Justice Department today filed a brief supporting two Kentucky counties accused of violating the constitutional ban on government establishment of religion by posting framed copies of the Ten Commandments…

One just wonders which ten commandments they’ll choose.
