the man behind maus

Linette and I just got home from seeing the famous cartoonist Art Spiegelman present his Cartooning 101 lecture at Eastern Michigan University. It was quite a bit more political than I had anticipated and just pretty great in general. I want to write up some of my notes, but Im tired. I will try to stay up and see what I can put together for you Spiegelman, for those of you who dont know, was a designer of Whacky Packages (one of my first obsessions as a kid) in the 60s and 70s. He is, however, probably best known as the creator of the Maus, a graphic novel about the plight of his Jewish family in Nazi Germany, in which the Jews are portrayed as mice and the Nazis as cats. He won a Pulitzer Prize for that. If theres still time where you are, you should go somewhere and buy a copy. Ive found it a good thing to have around the house.
