We all knew it was going to happen, so I guess this isnt really news, but it looks like prosecutors are beginning to use the increased powers outlined in the Patriot Act to prosecute individuals not suspected of terrorist activities. Not to sound terribly paranoid, but its a slippery slope between where we are today and a police state Heres a clip from the Salon article:

A North Carolina county prosecutor charged a man accused of running a methamphetamine lab with breaking a new state law barring the manufacture of chemical weapons. If convicted, Martin Dwayne Miller could get 12 years to life in prison for a crime that usually brings about six months.

But not everyone is taking it lying down. Yesterday, a group in Boston met Ashcroft, there to drum up support for further Patriot Act measures, with the Imperial Death March from Star Wars. (An idea I had a few months ago, but never did anything with. I fucking suck.)

OK, now I really do need to quit reading the news and get to work.
