I wasn’t going to post anything here about Christine O’Donnell’s recent debate, during which she seemed to laugh at her opponent for suggesting that the separation of church and state is guaranteed in the Constitution. As the exact phrase “separation of church and state” isn’t actually in the Constitution, I thought that I’d cut her some slack, even though, from the clips I’ve seen, it looks as though she’s both puzzled by the concept, and unaware that the First Amendment states that the government cannot establish a state religion. But, then I happened across this Anderson Cooper segment, and felt as though I had to share it. It’s one thing for a candidate to blank on what the individual amendments to the Constitution say, but it’s quite another to do so after stating on repeated occasions that you are a Constitutional scholar. And, yes, that’s apparently what O’Donnell has been saying in front of Tea Party crowds.
I’m of the opinion now that the Republicans are paying O’Donnell to keep this nonsense coming, as it distracts from other races in which they’re running unqualified candidates. There’s really no reason that we should be talking about her at this point, as she’s down by over 20 points in the polls, and the gap the widening. But yet she keeps managing to show up in the press, and on blogs like this one.
OK, since this is my last post about O’Donnell, here’s one final thing – a clip from a recent article by Eugene Robinson:
…Four years ago, in a failed Senate campaign, O’Donnell claimed that China had a “carefully thought-out and strategic plan to take over America” and said she knew of this via “classified information that I’m privy to.” In the debate, she insisted that she had indeed received some “security briefs” while working with a humanitarian group that was planning a China trip. There are only two possibilities: She needs to be fitted for a tinfoil hat or she made the whole thing up.
Oh, and I have it on good authority that her father made his living as a counterfeit Bozo the Clown. He’s been quoted in the press as having said, “To be an official Bozo, you had to go to a special school in Texas.” The acorn, as they say, doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

I find it interesting that her father didn’t feel it necessary to have the Bozo training. That’s a great parallel for her political career.
You are not privy to classified information unless you have a secret clearance. A security briefing is nothing near the same thing. Of course no one called her out on this because she was – back then – a fringe player. Someone who four years ago was laughed at as being a nut job is now being laughed at for being a nut job. The only difference is that she IS the republican candidate this time around. If I were a Republican I would be ashamed.
I like how you’re swearing off posting about her. Get that you probably don’t want to contribute to a bandwagon you see as harmful in some ways. But it’s sorta like her foibles are a powerful drug. Or the (metaphor of the) car wreck you have to look at, with the added suspense of how many people will support her anyway.
You’re not afraid of painting yourself into a corner? Quite a vow to take.
I like the conspiracy theory that she was put forward by the Republicans to distract us from their other incapable candidates. I wonder if it’s true.
The liberal media’s obsession with her is what is making her more popular. Ignore it and it goes away. You can’t help your self.
Uhh… she’s down in the polls by 20 points. I don’t think that the liberal media is helping her campaign at all.
I could care about polls and I am not voting for her, obviously. All I am saying is that Mark and others cannot control themselves. The right and the tea party is driving them nuts. It is so obvious.
I think that both groups drive each other nuts.
I dismissed you conspiracy theory at first, but then I read the news today and noticed that O’Donnell was already embroiled in a new controversy. Last night, in a debate, she couldn’t name a single Democratic senator.

This story, by the way, was running above stories about the close senate races in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and elsewhere. If it weren’t for O’Donnell, I bet you that the national press would be doing a better job covering Rand “aqua budda” Paul and his pro-segregation agenda.
Word is, O’Donnell is not just losing her race, but she’s dragging down the Republican candidate for Senate in the neighboring state of Pennsylvania.
