I’m having a hard time with assessments of the shooter as a poor, mentally troubled soul. Can’t we define anyone who commits horrible acts as mentally unstable? The teen who shoots people covering up his gang tags? The old dude who fondles little kids? The power crazed banker who exploits his investors? The suicide bombers? And so on.

Aren’t most criminal acts, by definition, self-obsessed and anti-social?

The thing that bugs me about this shooter is that he seems very self aware. Even his mug shot strikes a very sane and conscious pose. He’s exaggerating.

Self obsession + anger = paranoia. Paranoia looks for confirmation of fears (aka self affirmation). He got it.

If one can, after the fact, equate anger and paranoia with mental illness, I say let’s make that the standard for getting a firearm. No guns for paranoid and/or angry people since those, apparently, are the primary symptoms of the mentally ill.

I like how he automatically starts surveying whenever he’s in a position that calls for surveying.

My favorite part was when he was walking through town and got surrounded by a bunch of surveyors and then just started surveying like a mother fucker, like out of nowhere, grabbing their tripods and lasers and stuff. One minute he was just this regular guy, and then next he was like the best surveyor ever, making up maps and calculating shit. It was intense. And then he was just like, “How did I know how to do all of those elevation calculations and mark those property boundaries like that?”

I liked the flashbacks from the big covert surveying job in Europe that went horribly wrong.
