I’ve got work to do tonight, but I can’t seem to find the energy. So, I’m procrastinating, watching old episodes of The Tomorrow Show, and bemoaning the fact that we don’t have good, substantive late night talk shows anymore, or, for that matter, television hosts like Tom Synder. For those of you unfamiliar with Tom, and his unique brand of chain-smoking genius, here’s a clip:
OK, now I’m heading over to Netflix to move The Runaways movie up in my queue. After having watched this exchange between Snyder and the heavily made-up impresario Kim Fowley, I find myself desperately needing to know more about the evil son-of-a-bitch behind the band.

For those of you who won’t follow that last link, here’s how the article begins.
As odd as it sounds, I actually miss seeing people smoking on TV (see esp.: the old Dean Martin roasts). Everyone looks so chillaxed….(and for the record, I’m a lifelong non-smoker…in fact, I have asthma).
I watched Snyder faithfully up until he retired, truly unique and always a compelling interviewer. The Runaways movie is pretty weak. I like how they tried to make Kim Fowley a villain when he is far more interesting and worthy of a movie than all of the Runaways put together.
Fowley is also one of the men responsible for the novelty song Alley Oop. I doubt movies will be made about it though.
My son, Tim, is a big fan of Kim Fowley. I believe Mr. Fowley made a skiing song called “Shush Boomer” that was a sendup of surfing songs.
I’ve watched those Tom Snyder punk and new wave videos a few times now, and, as good as the interviews with Patti Smith and Ken Fowley are, I find myself more interested in the guests he has on around them, like Frank Capra. It’s surreal to me that Capra could be a guest on the same show as someone like Joan Jett. People these days don’t give a shit about old people who have actually done things.
Hee hee, Tom interviewed Patti Smith (that’s my full name). Always cool to see it when it’s not relating to me. :)

The airline I work for had Joan Jett on as a passenger once a number of years ago. Flight attendants said she was one of most rude and obnoxius people they ever ran across. Maybe she has mellowed with age and no longer looks down upon “servants”.
Joan seems so nice here, in this 1977 video, but I can see how, after several decades in the business, having people kiss your leathery old ass, you could begin to think you deserved it.
