Fortunately no one was killed, but it looks like there was a shooting yesterday evening near the intersection of Cross Street and Ballard. Here’s a clip from the Ypsi Citizen:
…The Eastern Michigan University Police Department sent an alert through its campus mailing system early this morning to notify the campus community of the shooting.
According to the release, the incident occurred at 8 p.m., when three non-students were involved in an argument with the suspect behind an un-named business in the area.
“The suspect then fired multiple shots from a handgun at the victims, causing a slight injury to one of them,” the report said. “The victim with the injury was transported to the hospital and released after treatment”…
A dispatcher from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said two vehicles had been stopped for matching the description. He said only one arrest had been made, but it was on an unrelated weapons charge.
The dispatcher said the incident occurred at one of the two party stores on the corner, but could not identify which…
I don’t suspect the two shootings are related, but it is interesting to note that the last shooting we had downtown was also at that intersection.

We also heard 5 gunshots last night between 10 and 11 pm. When we called the police they said they were already responding. We haven’t heard anything else about shootings at that time :/
Shots fired at Ballard and Cross were criminals firing at kids less than a half hour before, a few blocks away. Just stupid criminals, needing to be taking off the street.
It happens in every corner of the world.

My info: a significant other of mine went on to become a police officer. She indicated to me that the majority of police chiefs (including hers) would prefer more citizens to be armed due simply to the number of times that their off-duty officers (still carrying, even if not uniformed) were able to stop trouble simply by being an armed person.
I’m open for input from police officers reading as to their departments stance. Community you are paid to serve doesn’t need to be mentioned.
FWIW, my friends who carry have almost all needed to use the weapon; usually to protect themselves from some whacked-out black person dying for the next fix (carjacking etc).
The reason for the use, as well as the stereotype-in-action makes me sad. Just because they commute through a minority-populated region in Seattle should not mean that they are right to expect to use a weapon in self-defense, should it? I still think not, but that may be in spite of evidence (I’m make my living with data crunching)- but like a blindfolded Republican, I’m going to take this stand that in spite of any evidence as I’m just not willing to admit it could be true.
Just so I’m clear on this… there were two shootings in Ypsi last night? One at 8:00 and one at 10:00? How fucked up is that? I mean I love this town, but I don’t know how to defend two shootings and a stabbing in a single night. That kind of thing shouldn’t happen in a town of our size. If someone says, “Hey, did you hear about the shooting last night?” only to have people say, “Which one?”, that means that you’ve got a problem.

If there was a 10 pm shooting on or near Forest (assuming that “John on Forest” lives on Forest and was home at the time), plus the 8 pm shooting at Cross & Ballard reported at YpsiCiti, plus the ~4:30 am shooting/stabbing on Young St (off Miles St) reported at AnnArbor.com, that’s three in one night. WTF?
The pops of gunfire are like seeing first tulips of spring bursting out of the ground. Isn’t nature wonderous?
I’ve been on the fence about getting a CCW, but this seals the deal for me.

Also, as a responsible, law abiding citizen, I have every legal right in this state and country to do so. You don’t need any license to open carry in MI.
Just get a permit to purchase a pistol in your local jurisdiction’s cop shop, have it notorized for $10, go buy a pistol and an open-carry holster, return the triplicate thingy the gun store gives you to the local jurisdiction cop shop, put on the holster in a way that’s not concealed at all (not by a coat or shirt or anything, has to be in plain sight), put a gun in it, and walk around like the ballsy free human being that you are.
Check current laws for places you can’t carry it. I’m not up to date on those. Maybe schools and gov. buildings and bars, etc.

To be clear the second shooting was at 4am Sunday morning. Not 10pm Saturday. The stabbing happened at the same party and apparently the stabbing was a precursor to the shooting. I have pictures of the police force presence on my street. It was pretty massive, including a small tank and a mobile hospital.

the rules for transporting firearms are tricky. I know that it must be unloaded, and in a case. I think it also has to be a distance from the driver, and the ammo must be in a seperate place from the gun…but I don’t know all the exact rules…
The most important rule is to never consent to a search if you get pulled over, just in case you accidentally did something wrong without knowing it. That’s a good policy for anyone, anytime, really. “I do not consent to a search.” Exercise that freedom, feel the burn.
It seems that having a gun may give people a false sense of safety. A gun can’t stop a bullet.

From what I’ve read, those laws refer just to handguns. (Maybe our lawmakers didn’t consider the possibility that someone would openly carry a rifle/shotgun around town.) So feel free to tote your no-license-needed rifle/shotgun into the courthouse. But IANAL, so if you get arrested for doing so, don’t call me.
I heard these shots but didn’t call the police. I am now ashamed of this. I am glad someone else did.
At the time though, I was safe in my apartment just south of Michigan. I thought about picking up the phone and thought about the last time I called in the sound of gunfire. It was 2004 and it was in the parking lot of the apartment building I lived in on Emmet. I remembered the police dispatcher sounding tired and annoyed, perhaps by the tremor in my voice: “Are you sure it wasn’t just fireworks?” she said.
Still, no excuse on my part.
I’m on the Ypsilanti City Council and our council chambers are right down on Michigan Avenue. When we meet in the evenings, we are usually hanging out at the Vu and getting coffee at Beezy’s. A few months ago, one of the other council members misses the after-dinner committe meetings. We call him and shit, thinking he is drunk and went home or something.
Turns out he went to Beezy’s to get a latte, was mugged at gunpoint by 3 dudes when he was getting back into his car. They beat the hell out of him, took his phone and cash, then zip-tied him in the backseat. They drove around the Thompson block for hours, using his phone, taking cash off his card at ATMs, and then left him in his car in the middle of nowhere. He was in uniform too. Those Yips just don’t give a fuck.
We had to raise taxes to get limos and security because people would come towards the parking lot at city hall while we were there like a zombie apocalypse, begging for cash and breaking into people’s cars in broad daylight.
The lesson here isn’t that people should be aware of their surroundings and not going through life drunk and stupid. The lesson is that we shouldn’t get out of our cars, or even slow down while driving through Ypsi.

I got the reference…funny. The un-funny thing, is that I’ve been ask for money more than a few times at the bus depot downtown. I’ve also been asked to purchase drugs numerous times. “Yo’, I got those trees dog. You lookin’ for them trees?”. This was by the same man, who, five minutes earlier, asked me for a donation for the veteran’s charity he represented. I gave him a couple bucks, and he gave me a little flag. I think that they would make more money just selling the trees, yo’…
I can’t wait ’till they cancel school busing, and my kid will have to take public transportation! Awesome…just don’t climb any “trees”, son.
