This warped logic definitely is NOT restricted to television. In fact, it too often passes for argumentation.
But I think no amount of arrogant liberal exceptionalism is going to repair the damage that’s been done by the actually existing powers-that-be (which is much less a group of people than it is a set of institutions that we assent to and privileges a group that fulfills its roles).
If you’re saying that the problem isn’t really Glenn Beck, I’d agree with that. He gives us a convenient place to focus our anger, but he’s just one man playing his part in this big American tragedy. Still, though, I can appreciate Stewart pointing out what a buffoon he is… It was kind of like Chaplin in The Great Dictator.
“Purity of Essence”
I’ve got a very good idea what the recall code is and I have to get in touch with SAC headquarters immediately…May I tell you that I have a very, very good idea, I think, I hope, I pray, what the recall code is. It’s some sort of recurrent theme he kept repeating. It’s a variation on Peace on Earth or Purity of Essence. EOP. OPE. It’s one of those…Don’t you know that General Ripper went as mad as a bloody March Hare and sent the whole Wing to attack the Soviets? Don’t you know that?
I love this. Beck’s persona is so overblown that Stewart’s impersonation is unmistakable, even though Stewart doesn’t even try to imitate Beck’s voice or appearance.
I was in awe of this, so well done, so spot-on.
