Saw him perform, or at least try to, 20 years ago, and he could hardly speak then. I can’t believe that is was only 40 at the time. He looked at least 60.
And here comes Patrick Swayze to steal the limelight.

I was in the Ace hardware in Ypsi this morning. A young guy buying lightbulbs mentioned that Patrick Swayze had died, and joked that his wife was at home mourning. A black woman in her 50s paying at the checkout asked, “who died?” and the lightbulb buyer repeated the name. “Huh,” she said, clearly not knowing who this guy was. Then she offered, “I heard Jimmy Carter died this morning.” Light-bulb-man was stunned, but had a quick comment: “he was probably in the middle of building some house for Habitat for Humanity. Heh!” The clerk, aghast, chorlted, “Well, I guess that’ll knock Patrick Swayze off the front page.” The woman continued, “Yeah, he was only like 60 or something. Anyway, that’s what I heard.” The two guys batted that one around, realizing that Carter was president about 30 years ago, and that would make him a little young. No, “He must be about 80,” the clerk insisted. I got out my iPhone and typed “Jimmy Carter”, and saw no particular news about him, and I usually get breaking news alerts pushed to me, and there was nothing.
So, I come to Mark’s blog to learn a nice lesson on the cultural quirks in our fair city of Ypsilanti. The 50-year-old black woman who conflated Jimmy Carter and Jim Carroll and who never heard of Patrick Swayze, and the 30 and 50-year old white guys who likely never heard of Jim Carrol had a perfectly scrumptious misunderstanding about three deaths—two actual and one imaginary.
Jimmy Carter’s press secretary Jody Powell just died. That’s the story the person in the Ace Hardware must of misheard.
Thanks for clearing that up, Robert. Quite a lot of sadness with these people taken too early.
Wow-this brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for posting. Poor JC. I just read a piece by him in a newer Found anthology of various writers and celebrities.
