glued to youtube

I wanted to blog tonight abut important things like the Republican prostitution scandal, Rush Limbaugh’s arrest, and the possibility of Karl Rove’s indictment, but I got sucked into a fruitless quest for a little piece of video that I suddenly remembered having seen, without sound, about 20 years ago, before a Ramones show in New York. The video was of the band on the set of “Live with Regis and Kathy Lee,” being interviewed. All I can remember is how Kathy Lee was recoiling in horror, and how much I wished at the time that I could have heard what was being said. Anyway, as I was sitting here, clipping my toenails and watching “America’s Next Top Model,” it dawned on me that now, thanks to the Internet, I might be able to do just that. After following a lot of leads down dead ends, though, I’ve finally decided to give up and call it a night. (“Damn you, Internet!”)

The evening of searching was not without its rewards though. I found some great footage of the Ramones performing “Rockaway Beach” at CBGB in ’74, Tom Verlaine trying to motivate Richard Hell at around the same time, David Byrne interviewing himself, silly kids lip synching to the Pixies and Peter Schilling’s new wave hit “Major Tom”, Ziggy Stardust performing “Space Oddity”, a Peter Frampton-looking David Bowie doing the same song in 1969, Iggy Pop being interviewed on Canadian TV, lots of stuff by Patrick McGoohhan, Columbo on the set of “Alias”, assorted clips from “Degrassi Jr. High” (including the scene where Wheels escapes the child mollester), and footage from MSNBC about the outing of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame by the Whitehouse (in what was most likely an attempt to get back at her husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson, for publicly questioning the evidence that took us to war), and how it could have not only ended her career, but severely damaged the CIA’s ability to keep tabs on the Iranian nuclear program.

(And, if you couldn’t tell, I just threw that last link in so that I wouldn’t feel so guilty about wasting my evening with all the rest of it.)

On the subject of videos that I can’t find, I heard on the radio a few days ago that Orson Welles, two hours before his death, was a guest on the “Merv Griffin Show.” I think it’s going to be on a new “Merv’s Greatest Moments” DVD release, but if someone knows where I could find it online for free, I’d appreciate it. (I don’t want any of my money going to Merv.)

So, have you seen any good videos online lately?

I posted somewhere back on my LJ a vid of a hairy REM on a hairy Letterman Show (around 1936) doing “Radio Free Europe” – Buck hole was obvioulsy on coke.

YouTube is better than cable or coke.

Republican Prostitution scandal? Rush Limbaugh arrested? I may have to lift my ban on news media.

As for interesting videos, I always get a kick out of this, but I may have originally found it because of your blog, so apologies if it’s old news…

Thank you. I never ever thought I would get to see Ziggy Stardust perform period, let alone Space Oddity. You Tube is like a vacuum that can suck you in. You should check out the Joy Division/Ian Curtis footage they have.
