my daughter’s most recent milestone

I don’t write about as many of the little developmental milestones as I probably should. It seems as though we’re flying by them so fast now.* Every day there’s something new along the way to crawling. Three days ago it was waving. Yesterday it was feeding me. I was sitting there with Clementine on my lap, holding a little bowl of Cheerios, when she very purposefully reached in, grabbed one, and lifted it up to my mouth, smiling. It was one of the coolest things I’d ever seen. Proudly, I went to tell Linette, but apparently it was old news to her. She said, “She’s been feeding the dog like that since yesterday.”

I want to write more, but I need to go to bed now. I have a cold. I caught it from my daughter. I spent yesterday coated in her snot and today my throat’s almost completely closed off. (I knew I shouldn’t have eaten those Cheerios.)

*I was going to say that we were burning through the developmental milestones faster than a pair of Olsen twins through chocolaty Exlax, but then my OCD kicked in and I began worrying that saying that could cause my daughter to have an eating disorder someday, so I chickened out.

omg, that story about the cheerios is hilarious. i usually read your stuff for serious political updates, but finding out about your daughter feeding the dog first before taking care of you made me laugh so hard i got the hiccups. does anyone out there have a hiccup cure? i also called in my husband to read the story and even he laughed. usually he has the sense of humor of a puff adder so apparently it conjured up very funny images in his mind.

Slow, deep and steady breathing works for me.

I like your story, Mark. Perhaps she’ll walk to the dog first, too!

Yep. Enjoy those milestones while you can. Before long they want the keys to your car so they can go make out with their boyfriend/girlfriend.

Mark, I know you think I am being flip but I am really starting to wonder if I have OCD, a very scary Ursula K. Leguine version of it.

Case in point, I always was fascinated with weirdo geniuses/autism…watching movies, documentaries, reading about it…the NYT’s magazine article way back on Asperger’s. But then I after my son was born I was afraid my interest would cause him to have it so I abandonded it like the plague. Alas, I was too late as my son IS on the autistic spectrum. Pretty freaky huh? And, yes I blame myself.
