I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else in the press, but someone in the Metafilter comments section has posted a link which, to some degree, explains the mass murder that took place yesterday on an Indian reservation in Minnesota. Apparently, Jeff Weise, the killer, was a Native American follower of Hitler. At least that’s what he said on-line before the attacks. (He also mentioned that administrators at his school suspected what he was planning, which kind of makes you wonder how this happened.)
not as much press as columbine

Why is it that it only makes the news when white kids get shot up?
OK, how many people have been thinking, “what did his grandfather do to him?”. I wonder why it did not get as much press? I tend to believe that severely depressing news items now have more competition.
I grew up in MN, a whole lot of kids appear to freak out there. Anyone remember the ax murder Negativeland event that took place, I believe, in Bemidgi too?
just googled and the negativeland thing was a hoax bit the quadruple ax murder was not. However, it was in Rochster not Bemidji. Not like it matters.
In defense of the press, I’ve heard it mentioned that some reporters have been run off the reservation. Given that, and the fact that this area of MN is quite a ways from any major media market, I don’t know if it can all be attributed to racism, but clearly there is something to what you’re saying, Steve.
Christianity is stupid.
Lest anyone get mad at Brett for his last comment
It was on the Today Show. Not while it was happening, but they reported on it after. And I heard about it on BBC the evening of.
JeffW eise was not a loser, he had a lot of friends the press just talked to people that judged him by what he wore and what music he liked, the girls are lying, he didnt wear eyeliner and chains, he was really a good person, juss not really understood….
I was a high school student in Rochester MN at the time of the murders of David Braam’s (sp?) family. He rode our bus, and as usual we stopped out in front of his house to pick him up. Only on this day, he was not there. The bus driver waited for several minutes before proceeding to the next scheduled stop. Little did we know at the time, but Braam’s mother, father, younger brother and sister all lay dead inside the house. The psychology behind parenticide is intriguing and frightening, and I don’t know of a lot of research that explains the underlining causes. Maybe I should blog…
Everyone should blog…. Thanks for your thoughts, Kathy.
