Last week, I posted something about my intention to watch the newly released Mike Judge film, “Idiocracy,” at the Corner Brewery. Well, I’ve made a few calls and it looks like it’s going to happen this Friday evening, January 19, at 8:00 PM. If you’d like to watch it with me, feel free to drop by. (Feel especially free to drop by if you have a DVD player. Otherwise I’ll have to figure out how to disconnect mine and bring it from home.) For those of you who would rather stay home and watch TV, I just checked and there’s a rerun of “The Ghost Whisperer” on CBS. And, one of the cable stations that I don’t get is showing back-to-back episodes of “Mama’s Family.”

I may be there, depending on the episodes of Mama’s Family in question. I don’t leave the house if there’s a “Naomi” episode on.
I just saw it last week, kind of a letdown actually. It has some interesting ideas and is genuinely original compated to most comedies out there. It’s also pretty short on laughs overall. Easily the weakest thing Mike Judge has done. I wonder how much of Fox’s decision to bury it was corporate fear and how much was based on the overall weakness of the film. I would be surprised if a wide release would have generated any real controversy. It was really pretty much a half-assed reworking of Woody Allens “Sleeper.” Not nearly as good either.
this is a direct ripoff of “the marching morons” by cyril kornbluth. in his book, a man is accidentally put into suspended animation by an experimental anesthetic and is awakened many years later to fin the entire country’s iq has dropped about seventy points. a small group of intellectuals try to run the government and protect people from their own stupidity. it’s a great read.
Ok, so it’s not going to be great. I’m OK with that. I wasn’t expecting anythng as good as “Sleeper.” I’m just looking for a little reprieve from all the product placement.
And I’ll add “The Marching Morons” to my list, Dorothy. Thanks.
Fer sure, it’s a one-trick pony– And he beats it to death. I, however, liked what he was attempting, although he definitely missed the mark. If he had managed to put in an underlying vein of darkness with hints, or maybe outright touches of “V is for vendetta” or “Brazil” or somesuch, he would have had a stronger storyline….. We get it! Everyone is idiots! Now give us something more– Like his “Office Space” where the apathy of everyone is so strong it should have been billed as a costar.
I, of course, remember all of the apocalyptic sci-fi novels I read, from Orwell’s 1984 on, and I fear the truth of our coming dumbed-down future: That it will have an even smaller batch of the privileged few (than we have now) running roughshod over the rest of us…. Oh, and thanks to Dorothy, for remembering the similarities of the C.M. Kornbluth story, which was driving my wife nuts, as she was sure that she had read a story like “Idiocracy” sometime before…Now she can stop digging through the boxes of books in the basement looking for her “proof”……
OK, now I’m totally not looking forward to it… but I’m going to do it anyway. Maybe I’ll just take my laptop and blog through it.
I’ll be the first to apologize for not making it. The Apostle Paul said that couples should not, “Deprive each other, except by mutual consent.” Always dutiful to Paul, I could not “deprive” my wife and did not, in the slightest.
By way of background, to simplify every life decision, I’ve developed a ranking system of great philosophers I let guide my moves:
1. Jack Daniels
2. Phillip Morris
3. The Apostle Paul
4. Mark Maynard
5. Satan
It’s uncanny how often numbers one and two concur with number five … I still haven’t figured out what that means. I thought about throwing Jesus into the mix, but he always seems to agree with MM, so what’s the point?
The whole movie is now on Youtube.
