“The Who Guy” is apparently alright

As I mentioned yesterday, the worst part about this past weekend’s radio show, at least from my perspective, was the fact that we didn’t receive a single call from “The Who Guy”… the guy who, ever since our very first or second episode, has been calling in under false pretenses, only to get me engaged in conversation and then cut abruptly to a lesser-known track by the Who. Well, I was thinking about him earlier this evening, and hoping that something terrible hadn’t happened to him, when it occurred to me that I should post something on Facebook, and see if perhaps I could find something out.

Well, within minutes of posting this, I received the following friend request.

petepownshend

At first, of course, I thought that it might really be Pete Townshend, and that he might have coincidentally decided to join Facebook just minutes after I posted something about “The Who Guy” who trolls my radio show, but then it occurred to me that the real Townshend would probably know how to spell his own name. And, I figured, he’d probably also ask one of his bandmates to be his Facebook friend before reaching out to a middle-aged AM radio personality in Ypsilanti, Michigan… So, putting two and two together, I can say with some degree of certainty that our favorite Saturday Six Pack troll is alive, well, now honing his considerable skills on social media. So, you can rest easy, Ypsilanti. I suspect he’ll be back with us come Saturday.

[note: If anyone would like to earn a little extra credit, I think it would be really cool if someone would go through the first five episodes in The Saturday Six Pack archive, grab all of the calls by The Who Guy, and string them together, so that we could listen to them all back-to-back, and get a better handle on what we’re dealing with here.]

Later, he also sent me a message saying, “You’ll be pleased to know that I am safe.”

I have listened to the tapes and I think that it’s Jim Harbaugh.

As competition makes everyone better, I’m hoping that a challenger emerges. Maybe someone who calls to play old school funk. Maybe someone who calls to play back recordings of Mark talking. Maybe someone who calls from a nearby building, creepily narrating what’s going on inside the studio. The possibilities for good trolling are endless.

It’s just like groundhogs: treasure the one you got, because the next one might be worse.

That’s really bad form on his part. If he’s going to miss a show, he should arrange for a substitute.

Mark and D’Real you should know better than to have a private conversation on the internet about a post on this site.

I want the guy to comeback who just called in to let you know what was playing on other radio stations while you were on the air.
