“don’t vote”

Stories have begun circulating about voter rolls being purged. Just to be on the safe side, it probably wouldn’t hurt to check online and make sure you’re registered. If you’re in Michigan, you can check by clicking here and entering your zip code and birth date. It only takes two minutes… As Monday is the registration deadline here in Michigan, you should probably do it now.

If you aren’t already registered to vote, it’s imperative that you find a way to get registered as soon as possible. In some states, you can register online, but, unfortunately, Michigan isn’t one of them. Here in MIchigan, your best bet is probably either an office of the Secretary of State or the Obama campaign.

And, as much as I know people hate being lectured to by self-righteous Hollywood celebrities, I wanted to pass along a link to this new “Don’t Vote” PSA by Leonardo DiCaprio, Courtney Cox, Forest Whitaker and friends. I know I’ll be mocked for saying it, but I really liked it. But, then again, I’m a sucker for sarcasm and Jonah Hill.

[This post also appears, slightly edited, on the Michigan Messenger site.]

THIS DEBATE IS SO FUCKING BORING. I wish Palin would stop reading her script and say something stupid so I can stop reading this crap.

    Biden is even worse!

I can’t wait to hear everyone saying, “But Courtney Cox told me not to vote,” as McCain is announced our next President.

I saw the entire PSA on Ellen yesterday, and it moved me.
I know many people think that celebrities have “no right” to put themselves and their opinions into politics, but I have always disagreed. I think it is their right because they are citizens too, and if we give them the spotlight, and when they use it for a good cause, more power to them. I think we forget that they are citizens. They were kids once, they are daughters, parents, they are us. Yes they are lucky enough to do what they love, get paid a lot, and they could sit back and do nothing, but they don’t and that is cool to me.

Celebrities sure have the right to say whatever they want, but I think the political power and credibility their celebrity brings them is largely undeserved. I also recognize I can never change the fact that people take seriously people who maybe they shouldn’t take so seriously, based solely on entertainment status rather than character and intellect.

Monday is the last day to register to vote in Michigan. So register! Also, you can get great BBQ today from 11-6pm at the Obama office — $20 donation — YUM!!! 115 W Michigan Avenue. If you go in and pick up some barbecue, you can register to vote there. And get a great poster. Or some buttons. Or a yard sign. Or sign up to make some calls. It’s fun running into people you know there–or you might even run into some celebrities (Jamie Lee Curtis was in the office on Thursday). Maybe Bruce Springsteen will also stop in the office before the concert…

As a semi-almost-famous person on my block I say, “Don’t vote… …and don’t register to vote by Monday either. Whatever you do, don’t vote.”

If you are a Republican, then you have my consent to stay home on Nov. 4th.
