My one-day-a-year band, The Monkey Power Trio, was just contacted by a radio station in California. They wanted to set up interviews with each of the band members. It seems that they’re planning a 3-hour long special on the band. None of us in the band really knows what to make of it. There’s been attention in the past, and we get a little college radio play, but Jesus — three hours?! The only thing I can figure is that they’re setting us up for something like this… Here’s part of the note from the station’s music director.
>> …it’s looking like a 3 hour special and it’s looking
>> like it will go down May 20th from 7-10 pm Calif time.
>> it will be talked up on the air and on the site
>> and various newsgroups, etc. and a cool graphically
>> excellent program guide will be mailed to at least a
>> couple of thousand listeners. so there will be hype
>> for the special.
Maybe you’ll appreciate how weird this is, if you actually listen to The Monkey Power Trio.
Have you listened?
Now imagine tuning in for three hours.

My other thought is that the station’s trying to prove its indie cred by going as obscure as possible. We apprently get played by european djs in dance clubs for the same reason.
Maybe it’s the station we make prisoners listen to.
That’s great, man! Meaty Girls was my favorite track off the last album.
That doesn’t happen to be the CA based Pentagon station they use to broadcast to Guantanamo Bay, does it?
I’ve always said, MPT is the new waterboarding.
hey-
I found this blog thingie while searching for a completely different MonkeyPowerTrio-related thing online.
I’m the actual guy who will be doing the aforementioned MPT radio special. I’m doing it because I like the band and want them to get more exposure. that’s all there is to it. it’s a personal undertaking; the station (www.kfjc.org) as a whole has no particular interest other than to say “if a DJ wants to put in the work to make a cool special, it’s OK with us.” the month of May is a month of specials on KFJC and the DJs are encouraged to present something (artist, band, genre, time period, etc) that we personally want people to hear.
no ulterior motives whatsoever here; KFJC already has plenty of indie cred and they don’t need my help in that regard.
thanks.
