home alone with clementine, watching “sergeant bilko”

Linette’s gone for the weekend, so I’m home alone with Clementine. For the most part, we’ve been having a great time. We’ve been taking nature hikes, eating peanuts on the banks of the river, cooking together, and working on little projects around the house. That’s the stuff I told Linette about on the phone this morning. What I didn’t tell her, is that we’ve also been building fires in the backyard, learning about the sweet science of boxing and British quiz shows, and staying up late watching old Phil Silvers and Jack Benny clips on YouTube.

Speaking of Phil Silvers, did you know that you can watch two whole episodes of “Sergeant Bilko” on YouTube?

Here are links to the episode entitled “The Eating Contest,” guest-starring a young Fred “Herman Munster” Gwynne. (Parts 1, 2, 3) And, here are links to the episode entitled “Doberman’s Sister.” (Parts 1, 2, 3)

Hopefully, you’ll enjoy them more than Clementine. (I suspect they’re more fun to watch when you’re not sitting on the lap of an old man who insists on explaining to you why each particular part is funny.)

As for the boxing, we didn’t really watch much. She just caught a second or two of a Muhammed Ali fight on my laptop as I was jumping between Phil Silvers clips. (I stayed up until 2:00 AM the night before watching classic fights and TV commercials from the 60’s.) She saw Ali and Foreman running around the ring, bare-chested, and yelled, “Dinosaurs ate their shirts!”, followed by a rabid chomping sound. She’s so much more imaginative than I could ever be.

So, anyway, Linette comes home tomorrow and, so far, there haven’t been any big problems. Clementine probably isn’t bathing as much as she should, but otherwise things are good. At last count, she still had all of her fingers and her toes… So now it’s time for our fun to come to an end as we begin to sweep up our nacho crumbs and scrub all the dishes in the sink.

Muhammad Ali was a boxer…does this Mohamed Ali you speak of box? Is he any relation to al-Qaeda operative Ali Mohamed?

    We want the truth Mark!

Home alone with the kid? I can barely fathom it. You are my hero.

Ok, I’m going to edit the post now so that no one will know what the hell Brian’s talking about.

That Brian sure is fucking crazy, isn’t he? Did you see that comment on MM.com? It made no sense at all.

And don’t be impressed, Dirtgrain. Having a three year old is nothing like having a newborn. (Does everyone know that Dirtgrain just had a baby?) It gets way easier.

Congrats Dirtgrain. How old now? Boy, girl, hybrid?

First three months were worst for me. After that, I realized, like Mark, that kids are actually quite durable, and can, like their fathers, subsist entirely on nachos, Spike TV, and beer nuts.
