the sheriff stands firm, refuses to meet with county officials on jail expansion, etc

Coutinuing our conversation of a few days ago on our county’s criminal catch-and-release program, today’s “Ann Arbor News” reports that Sheriff Dan Minzey continues to refuse to consider alternatives for dealing with jail overcrowding. (Letting criminals go just isn’t working as a long-term strategy.) Here’ a clip:

Washtenaw County Sheriff Dan Minzey appears to be increasingly isolated as he comes under fire from other county officials who are determined to move ahead on a jail expansion plan, with or without his endorsement.

Minzey’s critics say the sheriff, who remains at odds with the county administration over issues ranging from budgeting to policing, is undercutting his own effectiveness by refusing to attend meetings or talk directly with other officials about the jail expansion and other issues. They charge that Minzey is exacerbating the jail overcrowding situation by refusing to use a state law that allows him to cut some jail sentences by nearly one-third.

But Minzey says he is being undermined by a county board that doesn’t allow him meaningful input and which has endorsed a plan that will not solve overcrowding long-term. He says he will not second-guess judges who set sentences for the jail inmates, and his staff found that attending meetings was not an effective way to address the situation…

buying local in ypsi: the new initiatives

Several positive things have happened in the wake of our YpsiVotes event a few weeks ago on the subject of downtown business development. (If you weren’t at the event, audio and video can be found here and here.) Most importantly, we got a few more people not only buying into the idea that we, the citizens of Ypsilanti, can help determine how successful our city will be, but actually doing something about it. Toward that end, I’d like to tell you about two initiatives that have just gotten underway.

First, Depot town resident Karen C has put together a brochure encouraging other Ypsilantians to do their holiday shopping in Ypsilanti, from locally-owned and operated stores. (For why doing so might be important, see Think Local First or my rambling post a few days ago on the work of Michael Shuman.) A pdf of the brochure, which provides a comprehensive list of downtown businesses grouped by the types of products they carry or services they provide, can be found here. If you have thoughts on other things that should be included, or if you’d like to help by chipping in a few dollars to cover printing, please leave a note in the comments section. And, by all means, please feel free to print a few out and leave them around town. (We’ll have a bunch out at the Shadow Art Fair, if you’d like to pick some up to distribute.)

Karen’s been going store to store this past week, talking with business owners, and she says that so far the response has been incredibly positive. Not only are they offering to put the brochures on display in their own stores, but several are offering to help out. I’m told that Jim from Caf

help cast the shadow

If you’d like to help spread the word about the upcoming Shadow Art Fair, we now have a flyer up on the event site that you can download and print. There’s also an Upcoming dot org listing (thanks, Dave) through which you can invite people. And, feel free to take and use this web graphic as you see fit. The more people we get out for this, the more likely it is that we can do subversive, little community-building events like this in the future.

michael richards: the andy kaufman connection

When I heard news of Michael Richards’ racist rant the other day, my first thought was that he had done it consciously. I didn’t know exactly what he was trying to accomplish, but I thought that it was a put-on. Maybe it was just the memory of him appearing in that infamous Fridays’ skit with Andy Kaufman all those years ago, and the fact that it was later revealed that he was in on it. I guess I thought that maybe this was some kind of confused homage to Kaufman, who was himself apparently never happier than when he was being hated. This idea of mine was reinforced last night, when I heard that Richards had gone on Letterman, the site of so many classic Kaufman pranks, to “apologize.” Of course, now that I’ve actually seen the tape of him yelling the n-word and threatening people with forks up their asses (which, I guess, is something that Richards thinks white people did to black people not so long ago), I don’t think there’s much chance that it was a put-on. (I suppose it could be, but I can’t figure out what could possibly be in it for Richards.) I just think that a few guys in the audience got under his skin by calling him a “no-talent has-been” and he lost the part of his mind that reminds him that he’s in public. And, oh yeah, there’s also his seething hatred of black people… All the circumstances were right for the creation of a perfect storm.

So, when all of this first started breaking in the press, I began looking for the phone number of Andy Kaufman’s old writing partner, Bob Zmuda, who I’d interviewed a few years ago, when I was living in LA. I thought that his perspective would be interesting, especially if he thought that it was even remotely possible that it was a put-on. I couldn’t find the number though. Then, the next train of thought took me off in another direction, thinking that someone should start digging to see whether or not there might be any connection between Richards and the person who, we’re told, captured his meltdown on video. I was going to send a note to someone in the press suggesting that they pursue it, but then, the more I watched the tape the less likely that it seemed… If it is a prank, it’s as well-executed as it is misguided… I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Best case scenario, there’s a primetime, tearful televised reconciliation between Michael “Kramer” Richards and his African-American heckler… At some point during the discussion, the heckler, hopefully while Dr. Phil is talking, stands up and begins pealing off a rubber mask, revealing…. are you ready for this?…. Andy Kaufman!
