a possible attack on iran

Seymour Hersh, in this week’s New Yorker, reports that Bush is seriously considering the use of tactical nuclear weapons in an attack on Iran… Video of Hersh on CNN this morning, discussing his claim that the Joint Chiefs of Staff are vehemently opposed to Bush’s plan, can be found at Think Progress. (For what it’s worth, Paul Krugman (hiding behind the NYT subscription wall) thinks he’s right.)

If attacked, you can bet, Iran will retaliate.

Here’s something from the Washington Post.

As tensions increase between the United States and Iran, U.S. intelligence and terrorism experts say they believe Iran would respond to U.S. military strikes on its nuclear sites by deploying its intelligence operatives and Hezbollah teams to carry out terrorist attacks worldwide…

Terrorism experts considered Iranian-backed or controlled groups — namely the country’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security operatives, its Revolutionary Guards and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah — to be better organized, trained and equipped than the al-Qaeda network that carried out the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The Iranian government views the Islamic Jihad, the name of Hezbollah’s terrorist organization, “as an extension of their state. . . . operational teams could be deployed without a long period of preparation,” said Ambassador Henry A. Crumpton, the State Department’s coordinator for counterterrorism.

Iran, as if to taunt Bush, just announced a breakthrough in their nuclear program.

I saw a headline that read something like:

“Iran heats up stakes on nuclear row”,

and I of course immediately assumed that they’d perfected some method of fusion barbecues.
