driving the masses to scientology

In last week’s New York Times Magazine, there was a story about child actors trying to break into showbiz. In the article, the author makes a kind of offhand mention of the fact that one of the child actors that she’d been following for the story went on an open casting call for a public service announcement (PSA) being shot by the Church of Scientology. It made me wonder if perhaps this was a common practice. It wouldn’t, after all, be a bad way to attract a lot of young, struggling, impressionable actors and actresses into the plush Scientology Celebrity Center, where they could be sold on the religion. The church could bring in well over a hundred people a month with such an operation, easy. And who knows how many might come away from the experience thinking that the church could do for them what it did for Tom Cruise… It’s just a thought. But, considering their focus on actors, it may not be that far off. And, if their recent NASCAR initiative is any indication, they’re clearly looking at luring people to the religion though unorthodox methods. (Pictured is driver Kenton Gray’s “Dianetics” car, featuring the erupting volcano from the cover of L. Ron Hubbard’s book “Dianetics.”)

They’re also introducing a Dianetics brand cheese whiz and a daytime soap opera.

Before you know it, they’ll into ball shavers.

The car is nice, but I still think the Popemobile is more suitable for a religious organization.

Come to think of it, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile might be more appropriate for the Scientologists.

When I was in LA last year and hanging out with some actors, they were talking about acting classes that are offered in the city that are actually Scientology recruitment sessions in wolf’s clothing.

In another 200 years they’ll be bigger than the Catholics.

When I saw that NASCAR was getting a Scientology team, I was oh so thankful that my beloved Champ Car series wasn’t big enough to attract them.
