things i learned on the internet about the virginia tech massacre

It happened because we don’t teach our students to fear God.

And because no one wanted to speak out for fear of being labeled a racist.

If the victims were worth a damn, though, they would have fought back.

But, it probably wouldn’t have helped anyway, seeing as how God wanted it to happen.

People are assholes, who will use any opportunity to push their own agendas.

Limbaugh also said that we were too distracted by global warming hype to notice the threat this student posed.

    Asshole.

If we can follow the assertion that “people are assholes,” with “we are people” therefore “we are assholes,” I wholeheartedly agree.

Especially, if by assholes/agenda-pushers we mean frail folks trying to make some sense of what we find horrorific within the failed framework of our beliefs.

    First two links:

-If all students bought into the sacrificial, nonviolent way of Jesus, they probably wouldn’t shoot each other.

-I can appreciate the wistful idea of the community of heros that charges the gunman without concern for self and saves others.

I think both the above concepts are completely flawed in reality. I also think, although a bit assholeish, they come from humans trying to make sense of tragedy and craving a simple solution.

(I’ve tried to find the shred of decent humanity on the third link, but can’t. It exceeds my current limits.)

We all want to find a prevention for acts like this as if we can legislate, moralize or medicate our way out of human sickness and suffering.

If we didn’t have handguns, Cho would’ve spilled some gas, locked the doors, and burnt the house down. If God were in schools, Cho would’ve been in a slaughterhouse rage against bible-thumping hypocrites instead of spoiled rich kids.

I firmly believe we can, and should, enact laws, fund social causes, and embrace values that would reduce the harm of, and increase help to, the psychotic. But, to some extent, the psychotic will always be with us. And, we’ll always be assholes for trying to comfort ourselves with “I told you so” remarks that, in essence, say if the everyone believed exactly as me and did as I desire, everything would be okay. We’re all assholes. We’re all as human as the next guy. You and me, we’re the same.

Newt Gingrich says liberalism was responsible for what happened at VA Tech.
