ypsilanti man charged with being pedophile predator

A high school English teacher in the Plymouth-Canton school system, was taken into custody yesterday and arraigned on two child-sex felony counts. According to prosecutors, he propositioned an officer posing as a 14 year old girl online, and asked the agent to “watch a sexually explicit act.” No detail is given about the act, but as police reports reference a “web camera” being taken from his Ypsilanti home, one suspects that the act, whatever it was, was done by him. Letters have been sent out to the parents of kids who had him as a teacher, and the authorities are asking everyone to check their children’s “Buddy Lists” for the screen name “Oxy69.” Those who suspect the 27 year old has interacted with their children online, or in person, are asked to contact the Attorney General’s office at 313-456-0180. His real name is all over the press, but, as people (unless I missed a memo) are still presumed innocent under our legal system, I didn’t feel comfortable posting the details here.

Word is he’s married and has a very young child. One can only imagine how difficult this is going to be for them. (I suppose we should just be happy for them that his arrest wasn’t broadcast as entertainment as part of NBC’s vile “To Catch a Predator” series.)

A spokesman for the school district says, “he won’t be in the classroom until this is straightened out, and he will not be if he’s convicted.” I found it odd that they felt it necessary to spell it out that, if he’s found guilty of soliciting sex from a minor, he won’t be allowed to keep teaching there. And, it’s nice that they’re indicating that, if nothing comes of this, he’ll be welcomed back, but I can’t imagine that someone could possibly return to work after being so publicly accused of something so horrible.

[note: I only find evidence of one Oxy69 on MySpace, but I don’t see anything to indicate it’s him.]

a few more brains to pick on water street

There’s an all-day event taking place at the University of Michigan School of Business on Friday, March 2nd entitled “The Future of Development: How to Make Money and Make a Difference in Urban Redevelopment.” I don’t know for certain that we’d learn anything there that we don’t already know, and it would be pretty hard to justify sending very many people, as the tickets cost $275 a piece, but it seems to me that Ypsi might want to have at least one person in the room, if only to make the panelists, and those attending, aware of the enormous “opportunity” we know as Water Street. And, who knows, one of them might have a great idea as to how we can get something going. (If we don’t have the money to send someone, and if the organizers are unwilling to let someoen from Ypsi in for free, I volunteer to start a collection drive here at MM.com. I’ll even put in the first $10.) Here’s a clip from the UM release:

…In addition to (Peter) Allen, the one-day workshop will be taught by real estate attorney Robert Berlow of Kickham Hanley; commercial mortgage banker Lawrence Hadley, president of Hadley & Associates; Thomas Wackerman, president of ASTI Environmental, a brownfield restoration and risk assessment firm; and William Watch, president of First Commercial Realty & Development.

The agenda will include lunch and a bus tour of Ann Arbor developments, as well as an optional reception and dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m…

Hmmmm….. I wonder how difficult it would be to get that bus to take a short detour to Ypsi…

[If anyone in the audience has access to chloroform and knows how to drive a bus, let me know. I think I might have an idea.]

jim baker: how to accomplish the impossible

A few days ago, I mentioned here on the site that I was looking for about 150 old record covers for a project that I’m working on. Well, the response thus far has been incredible. Quite a few people have offered to give me their old record jackets, and someone, apparently unfamiliar with Michigan’s stalking laws, even left a few on my front doorstep this morning. My favorite was this one with Jim Baker rising up out of the Earth like a monster. Isn’t it incredible? I love the satellite. (There’s no way I’m giving it up.)

update: And, thanks to the magic of the internet, I’m listening to Jim Baker tell me “how to accomplish the impossible” as I type this!

free abdel kareem nabil

I received a very nice letter from a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors today. She wanted to know if I could help spread the word about a 22 year old Egyptian blogger by the name of Abdel Kareem Nabil, who has been sentenced to four years in prison for “insulting” Islam, the Prophet Muhammad, and President Hosni Mubarak. As of now, the story hasn’t received much press in the US, but it seems to be building. The “Washington Post” ran something this morning, and Linette tells me she just heard something on NPR. This, unfortunately, is not an isolated event in Egypt, where it seems free speech protections have been eroding these past several years. If you would like to know how to get more involved, Kareem’s friends, many of whom are Muslim, have started a website to rally and direct support.
