the new shadow art fair posters are going to be cool

Linette just finished working on the poster for the upcoming Shadow Art Fair and it’s really cool. I think the folks at VG Kids are planning to print them up this weekend, so we might be able to start getting them out early next week. If you know of a good, high-traffic area, either in Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti, where we might want to put one up, leave a comment or send me an email. Since the last Shadow Art Fair happened during the summer, when most of the students were gone, I’m thinking that we should especially try to focus on student-rich targets, like dorms, bars, libraries and places that allow the worship of Satan.

Speaking of the SAF, we got a nice mention a little while ago in “Real Detroit.” Here’s what they had to say:

…I mean, I’m sure you’re tired of A2’s Art Fair nuttiness. And that’s why I’m sure you’ve been to Ypsi’s Depot Town, a cute little revitalized area of shops and cafes. Its presence indicates a change in focus from an automotive-industry-dependent town to a creative resurgence.

Ypsi is teaming with artists and creative types, many of whom participate in the bi-annual Shadow Art Fair at the Corner Brewery (just outside of Depot Town). It’s got VGKids, Henrietta Fahrenheit, Crimewave Magazine, even Growing Hope, a collective of city gardeners…

It’s pretty cool that people are beginning to take notice of what we’re doing here… If you haven’t been to Ypsi in a while, why don’t you plan on coming out for the Shadow Art Fair and then take some time to look around.

Looks good. There'll be a flyer version we can print off ourselves, I guess?

I can't read the small print very will, but I think I can make out the phrase "ball shaving tent" in the lower right. Is that correct?

I'd be glad to put one up, Mark. My store may not be what you kids call "cool," but we are the highest volume new and used mystery bookshop in Ann Arbor.

I noticed that Found Magazine is one of the vendors, which raises several important questions.

1) Will they be selling the booty tape (an Ypsi original)?

2) Is this our mayor-elects kid? http://www.advancetitan.com/story.asp?issue=11221&story=4800

3) Why does your blog hate my apostrophe key?

Ypsi! ... hurry! ... go through your Friday, Saturday A2 News piles and rescure Mark Hodesh's insert promoting Holiday Shopping at Downtown Home & Garden! Turn to the "NOTES" page and nail it to your fridge door.

THIS is the attitude, the reality, the benefit and the dream of what could happen if ... Ypsi would shop downtown, if Ypsi had the RIGHT stores downtown, if the RIGHT stores really KNEW and SERVED their customers, if Ypsi would put the car keys back in their pockets and WALKED or BIKED to see what we have downtown, and if the LAKE DWELLERS and BOONIE PEOPLE would really notice all of the convenient parking that DOES exist and would come in for a much better time downtown than they could find at any strip mall in their areas.

More for us to do in our neighborhoods and downtown, of course, but the tide has turned.

I DO like Mark Hodesh's place ... like to recruit him for ourselves ... perhaps a spin-off location.

egpenet: I belive the same couple that own Downtown Home and Garden own the Fleetwood in Ann Arbor as well... So, yes, they do seem like the kind of people we should be talking with about opportunities here.

dr. cherry: Yes, the poster is mad dope. Shorty got skillz.

ok: I've never heard the "booty tape," but I suspect that you're right. I happen to know that our Mayor's son lives in Athens, GA and once had a band here called Cornish in a Turtleneck. (It just so happens that he's befriended someone I know in Athens... Small world.)

ubu: I don't know that there's a lot of crossover between our audiences, but I'd love to give you a poster for your window once it's done. Thanks for the offer.

tony: Yes, balls will be shaved, sanded, waxed and buffed.

matt: Yes, we will get flyers up for people to print out ASAP.

Mark Hodesh christened the Fleetwood as such, but hasn't owned it since the '70s.

He's run DTH&G since 1975, and worked for(?) Hertler's, the previous business in that location, before that.

I'll note that DTH&G is a good place to set up a wedding registry. Screw Bed Bath & Beyond.
