what's up on downing street

Last night, I mentioned that John Kerry, contrary to statements he supposedly made to the press late last week, did not march onto the floor of the Senate bright and early Monday morning and demand that Bush explain The Downing Street Memo. No, in the words of the folks at the Bella Ciao news site, he “wimped out.” In his absence, however, the story hasn’t died. (As the Washington Post says today, it “refuses to die.”) Today, Senator Ted Kennedy issued a statement concerning the incriminating document, and, in doing so, became the first US Senator in the month since the memo’s surfacing to have brought it up, thereby joining the chorus of 89 House members who have already publicly asked Bush for an explanation. (Whitehouse spokesman Scott McLellan has, until now, stated that it didn’t warrant a response.) And, as if that weren’t enough for poor Mr. Bush to deal with, he was asked about the memo today during a rare appearance before a real reporter… One last note… While many of us on the left have given up on Kerry, the folks at Common Dreams have not. Earlier today, they posted a passionate plea for him to lead the charge against Bush. We’ll just have to wait and see what, if anything, that accomplishes though. Maybe he’ll surprise us yet.

You know the downing street memo was published BEFORE both the US and England went before the Security council to give Iraq a final chance to fess up and enforce the other 17 security council demands that Iraq show proof it had dismantled its weapons programs. Iraq of course did not comply, now Saddam is in jail, the Iraqi's have a democratically elected government, women are not raped by Saddams sons on their wedding nights, The real Gulag system of political incarceration is shut down, other middle eastern nations are clammoring for democracy (even the Sauds just had a "limited" election. Of course the theocracies and petty dictators don't like this...

I haven't been following this at all, so please forgive me if this is redundant or just plain stupid--but it seems to me that if John Kerry were to lead any kind of charge against Bush, it would look as if it was personal, you know? Might not win his argument a lot of credibility. I imagine he has to tread carefully. What do you think?

I used to work at the Bella Ciao, I wouldn't trust anything that they say. When did they branch out beyond the restaurant into news service?

I agree, Chelsea, but there are plenty of other Democratic senators who could lead the charge. I'd think that Ted Kennedy has nothing to lose at this point. Or maybe a consortium of Senators.
