Summer 2010 Shadow Art Fair live blog

9:37 PM There are still some tickets for the 10:00 PM show of Dreamland Tonight, so come on out to Dreamland.

9:20 PM Paper Mice from Chicago will be on stage, along with Suicide by Cop and the Blood Mambas, at the Dreamland for just $5. The show starts at midnight.

8:50 PM A discussion from earlier in the day with Rev Aitor, as he was working on my unflattering portrait.

8:15 PM We just got a firsthand report from Jules, was at the SPUR Art Race.

We got to Spur just as they were getting ready to have practice runs. How does one describe a race involving a giant chicken, a giant one-eyed alien and a giant banana? And that’s just the start. There was also a gladiator, a dude with an icarus bike and a couple of other too hard to describe entrants. We were grinning from ear to ear. It was just one of those delightfully serendipitous moments.

8:10 PM Amanda Krugliak is on stage now at the Dreamland, talking unabashedly about sex and intimacy. I’d try to get some of it on video, but the camera is tied up at the moment, downloading video from the Shadow Art Fair… Earlier, someone must have gotten a hold of my phone. It now rings with a boner sound effect. I’m hoping that it doesn’t ring while Amanda is talking about oral sex.

7:00 PM The busses seem to be running really smoothly. I’ve taken two laps, and lots of people are riding. I’m at the Dreamland now. I heard the first two performance artists on the bill were great, and the place is full. It’s cool to see people showing interest in all of this stuff. I’ve yet to make it over to the Savoy, but things at SPUR looked cool. I think I saw a guy covered in lights rollerblading around with a metal bowl on his head.

5:30 PM Music Update: Forest Juziuk is going to be DJing at SPUR from 7:00 on. For the next hour and a half, he’s going to be here in the Corner Brewery’s beer garden, playing between bands… And I forgot to mention it earlier, but there were about 20 people outside this morning, for the Cinemasports kick-off. If you want to see their completed films, you can check them out at the Brewery, starting at 9:30 PM.

5:00 PM We’ve still got more tickets for tonight’s show, and, from here on out, we’re going to be selling them at both the Dreamland Theater and the Shadow Art Fair, so come to either place.

4:30 PMI Just got my unflattering portrait done by Rev Aitor, and now I’m out back, listening to Manhole. The busses should start running in another hour and a half… And i think Aitor still has a few slots left.

1:35 PM Kids seem to be having fun at the FLY Children’s Art Center tables.

1:10 PM OK, people are starting to watch the highlight reel and enjoy it… Things are good.

12:45 PM I’ve sold 4 tickets to tonight’s show already, but no one has dared to enter into our private viewing room. I think people might be scared to come behind the black curtain.

12:00 PM My undying gratitude to Zingerman’s for donating lunches to our vendors this afternoon. A delicious turkey reuben just pulled me out of a panic attack.

11:59 AM Video from just before we opened our doors to the public… And, yes, there’s apparently an Elvis impersonator working the door.

9:45 AM Issue successfully resolved. Excellent cupcake and fortune telling machines relocated.

9:35 Navigating first vendor issue of the day…

9:15 AM I got here to the Brewery this morning to discover that, sometime during the night, we’d suffered multiple terrorist attacks. Not only had the Brewery been yarn bombed, by a group called the Ypsi Fiber Liberation Front, but someone had released a giant spider in the Brewery. Right now, it’s hanging in the rafters, dripping venom, right above the front door. And, by giant, I mean like 15 feet long and about as big around as a narwal. Here’s the video.

Mark, I have a present for you. I will leave it for you at the CB if I don’t see you there (for some ungodly reason or another). :)

And thanks for the present, TP. I’m eating it right now, backstage at the Dreamland.

Sam was streaming it on U Stream. It was hilariously surreal.

Kudos to whoever chose “happy hour” late afternoon lighting for the event!

Ha, I saw the tree with yarn all over in the morning when the AAFF was giving out the cinemasports rules :) That’s awesome. It was fun watching all these – I wish I was able to get an unflattering portrait during SAF.

Hey Mark, thanks for the blog , just wanted to be sure to mention to the google surfers that I write about a lot of things…sex, love, longing, kids, work, divorce, and even getting older despite my denial, and the surprising way that we remain uncertain and vulnerable , our identity shifting like a shaky map quest. Love that Dreamland theater.
